3 good afternoon. i'm cody alcorn.diana has the day off.. winter weather is sweeping across our area this afternoon...and has prompted early dismissals from schools in western north carolina. evening classes at mcdowell technical community colleged...as well as church services at brevard community church...and renfew baptist church in travelers rest.also in greenville county-the school district says all evening activities are cancelled.all after-school programs and activities must end by six this evening! 3 from the upstate to the mountains...we're seeing snow across our area.a.in fact, greenville county schools just announced that all evening activities are cancelled. 3 we want to get right over to chief meteorologist kendra kent for a first check of the weather... 3 light snow and sleet is falling for parts of the upstate, with some heavier snow in western north carolina. expect skies to

accidents within n a ten minute period!snow and slick conditions contributed to that...the snow melted off pretty quickly after that initial dusting...but road crews are bracing for more. 3 d-o-t crews were out in full force in buncombe county this morning to try and catch up after the snowfall came a little sooner than they were expecting. road crews were out laying down salt and sand mixture to make the roads a little safer.throughout the day we saw light accumulations in this area...also earlier this afternoon some flurries. nothing too bad to write home about...tonight officials expect more snowfall...and one worry crews have tonight is the potential rain coming tomorrow...that could wash away the work they've done today...and they say they will have to go out and retreat for a potential freezing rain event friday. 3 3 3 "if conditions worsen by the

therefore, a mix of rain, sleet and freezing rain is possible early friday, and that could make driving treacherous. there is time of things to change, but right now i do think we could see some ice accumulations in the far northern upstate near the nc border and all across western nc. a wintry mix will continue through the day, with periods of cold rain in the upstate. the bulk of the

day. 3 as you can see behind me this large sand mound is what is being used on the roads to absorb some of the moisture here in buncombe county..but all over western north carolina...crews are gearing up for the first winter weather event of 2016. 3 just a few hours ago in asheville you could really see the snow flurries...not enough to accumulate earlier today on the ground...though we did see some light accumulation from the weather event earlier this morning. in hendersonville crews had not seen much snow when we caught up with them... but they are being prepared... brining the roads...using that mixture of salt and water that helps melt whatever ice comes

the rest of the week. the big worry is for a potential freezing rain event friday that could keep them very busy throughout the next few days. 3 3 "we've got predictions from duke energy and all the weather stations so we try to take all of that into consideration...we'd rather put it out and not need it, than need it and not have applied this stuff." stuff."the rain that's expected for tomorrow and friday will most likely wash away whatever work they do today...so that means crews will be back out to treat the roads...especially in anticipation of any ice that may come. 3 meanwhile highway patrol officials very busy today...working several wrecks that were weather related... including two involving school buses.they remind drivers to be careful...and if at all
