of attention on dams in south carolina, and dhec's dam safety program.and the owners of three upstate dams say the've been waiting months to get those repairs started. started.fox carolina's sarah danik has been looking into the issue.and has some answers for us in a fox carolina investigation. 3 cody and diana -i spoke with several dam owners in the upstate who were issued emergency orders after the floods.they tell me they want to make the repairs - but were waiting to hear back from dhec with approval for their plan of action.so we asked dhec about the reason for the hold up. 3 3 3 9:37:29 the dhec inspector saw the geyser and was concerned about thatmark amick is an investigator of sorts.(nats) he's also an engineer - and he's been in high demand lately.amick has been brought in to make repairs to three dams in greenwood county.they are three of 76 dams around the state that were issued emergency orders by dhec - following the october floods. the first two - are in the gatewood neighborhood

if there were any issues because we had the emergency order from dhec we had to address that - that involved an investigation - trying to determine if there were any issues that caused the ponds to breach or fail - of course to make sure the public was safe 09:24:29a few miles away - there's a third project in greenwood - at the upper north lake dam.(nats)amick has been working with kay davis there - who owns mallard court apartments, and is partly responsible for the dam that sits behind the property.(nats kay davis9:59:19 we had the water level down to make the pond safer)she - along with the other nearby apartment owners - and homeowners on the other side of the pond - have to collectively come up with the money to make the dhec ordered fixes. fixes.9:45:20 we have a system of ponds - this is the upper pond right here and we had some problems with it the last flood in oct it went over the top and caused some erosion and it caused us to be under

application was submitted.but he learned today, that is not the case.in a email to fox carolina on sunday, a dhec spokesman told us: 3 there is not a requirement that we approve the initial finngs before the repair application is submitted. that seems to be where the misunderstanding lies. today, fox carolina reached out to dhec to see if they believed it was a miscommunication on their end. they said in an email: 3 "dhec has provided specific information to dam owners as to what is required of them and what deadlines need to be met. our staff contacted mr. amick todd and clarified what was needed to move forward with submitting a repair plan application."in the meantime - dhec has ordered that all the ponds stay lowered.it's not something residents in gatewood are happy with.(mark sot)it kinda upsets the normal flow of things in a neighborhood if you're trying to sell a house or things like that -it makes it a little more difficult if the ponds are down 09:27:24a lot has

((fs)) according to dhec - right now there are 2,370 dams in south carolina that are regulated.36 of those failed in october. many are upset the problems weren't caught sooner through inspections.right now- the higher risk dams are inspected on a cycle - every two to 3 years. 3 as it's been widely reported we have struggled to be on a frequency that is appropriate for the state to inspect those dams, due to a variety of issues - one of those is being understaffed and not having the budget to do those on a routine basis 08:53:57) spokesman robert yanity says currently, they have just under 7 full time staffers for the dam safety program.they're asking legislators for 7 more - and a bigger budget for 2017. (robert )08:54:35 we certainly have always done the best we can with the money and budget we do have but this was sort of a wake up call for us to look forward and say we really need to make improvements on this08:54:47however, yanity tells fox carolina that he
