first on thirteen... we're getting a look at the moments leading up to a des moines officer shooting an unarmed man to death... it comes after an internal investigation by the police department... clearing that officer of any wrongdoing. it all started in june... when 28 year old ryan bolinger pulled up next to a traffic stop. police say he got out of his car and started acting erratically... before speeding off... a chase ensued... before bolinger made a u turn... and came to a stop. that's when police say he charged towards officer vanessa miller's car... prompting her to shoot. ... roll over on your stomach. police chief dana wingert said miller was justified to shoot bolinger through her squad car window. a grand jury had already come to that decision in august. in an interview with the "des

moines register"... wingert said miller's actions were quote, "consistent with what a reasonable person would do in that situation." jury deliberations will resume this morning in the trial of pete polson... the 33 year old faces several charges... including three counts of attempted murder. police say polson went on a shooting spree in pleasant hill last year... hitting two people. he claims he was using drugs at the time... preventing him from knowing right from wrong. during the week long trial... 40 witnesses testified... 37 of them for the state. each of the attempted murder charges carries up to 25 years in prison. chiristina williamson took a plea deal before her trial could begin... the 29 year old pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment. in exchange... prosecutors dropped three other charges against her. police arrested williamson in may... after seeing video from a from a hidden camera... showing her abusing three kids at her non registered daycare in pleasant hill. williamson told the judge she's on prescription drugs for bi

polar disorder. she could face up to seven years in prison... and will be sentenced in december. people are weighing in on a plan to merge the clive and windsor heights fire departments... i think it should work out just fine. i was against it at first, but now, knowing more of the facts, ive kind of changed my mind. city leaders detailed the plan at a meeting last night... they say it will help save money... and fix staffing issues. both departments have been under staffed for the past several years... and by joining forces... leaders say they could improve response times. in fact... the goal is to have firefighters on the scene within eight minutes... 90 percent of the time. that's from the time the pager goes off to the time that we roll up on scene, so in doing that we look at a four minute drive time as an integral part of from that page to being on scene within eight minutes. the clive and windsor heights city councils will vote on the

an ames school is showing off its brand new look... "meeker elementary school" will cut the ribbon to its new building at 4-30 this afternoon. the upgrades were part of a facilities plan... funded by a 55 million dollar bond referendum in 20-12. following the ribbon cutting... people can tour the building and learn about its security features. it's located at 300 20th street. a winterset woman is proving you're never too old to put on a cap and gown... any words of wisdom? i don't know. this is a shock to me. 102 year old ruth lampe

miller was justified to shoot bolinger through her squad car window. a grand jury had already come to that decision in august. in an interview with the "des moines register"... wingert said "the squad car isn't a magic shield. if the suspect had had a gun... he could have shot her right through the window." west des moines police want your help finding a man who they say is using stolen credit card numbers... police say this man made about 40 fraudulent transactions earlier this month. they say the man didn't steal any cards... but is using the card numbers to buy things. if you recognize him... call polk county crime stoppers at the number on the screen. a one thousand dollar reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. it's a growing threat... and local leaders are learning how to respond to it... the "iowa department of homeland security" held cyber security training yesterday. attendees

breached. this morning canada has a new leader... it's 43 year old justin trudeau... the son of the late prime minister pierre trudeau. his liberal party won a majority of the parliament's 338 seats yesterday... bringing an end to conservative stephen harper's near decade in office. trudeau says canadians are sending a clear message with the change... this is what positive politics can do. this is what a positive, hopeful vision, and a platform, and a team together can make happen. harper has stepped down as leader of canada's conservative party. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton is bringing some star power to des moines this weekend... she'll be joined by her husband... former president bill clinton... and pop star katy perry. they'll be iowa events center on saturday. no word yet on the time.

then... it's off to the "jefferson jackson dinner." the annual democratic fundraiser starts at seven p-m at hy - vee hall. all five democratic candidates are expected to be there... and its sold out. that includes bernie sanders... who is on the campaign trail in iowa this week... he took several questions during a visit to william penn university in oskaloosa. much of sander's platform is redistributing the country's money... he thinks the system is unfair for people who aren't rich. one woman said her student debt made her mortgage rate higher and tougher to pay... isn't that something. this is why the poor get poorer. you have to borrow money to go to school. now that you're in debt, you have to pay higher interest rates than you otherwise would. that's how the cycle goes. sanders wants people to be able to refinance their student loans... like you can do with your mortgage. he also wants to make attending a public university free. that

our top story... the des moines police department has completed its internal review of an officer involved shooting. the department cleared officer vanessa miller of any wrong doing when she shot and killed 28 year old ryan bolinger over the summer. miller fired through her squad car window... as bolinger walked towards the car. bolinger was unarmed. a grand jury declined to indict miller in august. people are weighing in on a plan to merge the clive and windsor heights fire departments... i cant imagine anybody saying oh i dont want the clive guy, i want the windsor heights guy. i want somebody there that can take care of me. its that simple, and if you cant save that kind of money, why wouldnt you want to do that. city leaders detailed the plan at a meeting last night... they say it will help save
