winds... a record for the country's pacific coast. stranded tourists prepared for the worst... with resorts in puerto vallarta turning ballrooms... into shelters. but rosy cordero refused to wait it out... evacuating by bus... a long, scary ride. "there was like banging on the windows, the windows started to get foggy, and it's just one of those moments where you're like, okay, okay it's coming, we gotta go, we gotta go." this is what hurricane patricia looked like from space... and here's the view from a timelapse camera in ixtapa... where we observed dramatic weather... from the edge of the system. "hurricane patricia is not just strong... the storm is huge... spanning a 170-mile stretch of mexico's popular coast...line more than 7 million people in the storm's path." the storm's strongest punches landed to the south of puerto vallarta... toppling trees... and flooding neighborhoods. this man says part of his house was destroyed... but he's grateful his family survived. in a fishing village near the hurricane's eye.... a school was
torn to pieces... still... mexico's president says the destruction is not nearly as catastrophic as many had feared. and tonight... the country is breathing a sigh of relief... that's nearly as strong as this history-making hurricane. airports that were closed by the storm have now re-opened including the one in puerto vallarta, while officials say there are still no reports of any fatalities, they are still urging people to remain cautious because of the risk of mudslides and flooding. in ixtapa mexico i'm joe fryer for nbc news. thankfully one of our own here at channel 13 dodged the worst of the storm. assignment editor amanda vizcarra and her family are in puerto vallarta. they were put on alert at their resort yesterday ... and spent the day inside playing jenga and waching the weather. the storm missed them. powerball cyclones the last two weeks iowa state
