this is in des moines on merle hay mall south of douglas. our photographer said the hail was the size of nerds candy. so not enough to cause any damage. people in west des moines saw some flooding as well. this was at 50th and mills civic. viewers tell us that sirens went off in west des moines as soon as the storm arrived. students at ankeny, west des moines and waukee schools were also held until the storm moved by. 53:57 we were let out of school the tornado sirens went off so they tolds us that we had to go back in for shelter most of us went to the locker room and a couple people in scattered class rooms with no windows. i my self was in the locker room it was pretty packed in there. 54:10 once the storm passed we started receieved a lot of reports of
as we said at the start of the show a tornado was reported near the airport. here is some of what it left behind. the winds flipped this trailer over into a fence. officials with the national guard say a sky light was also tipped over. no one was injured. channel 13's jannay towne is on fluer and thorton drive which is not far from there. she joins us now live with a look at what is left behind. there was also damage left
high winds damaged several buildings and brought down trees in corning. there was also major damage to this industrial park there you can see the storm twisted metal beams and tore off pieces of the building. so far no injureis have been reported there. this is only a portion of images that we got from today's storm. you can go to our website...who-tv- dot-com for the latest updates and to see photos. we'll also have more on tonight's news at 10. a child was rushed to the hospital after falling out of a third story window this morning des moines police were called to this apartment complex on twana drive. a three year old girl fell from a third story window and landed in a flower bed below. witnesses tell us she was crying and talking to paramedics before being taken to the hospital. a family member said she was released from the hospital earlier today and is doing fine.
over 200 people are scheduled to speak tomorrow about a proposed oil pipeline. the iowa utilities board says 2- hundred-10 people will get 2 minutes to give their opinions about the bakken pipeline that's 105 in favor of the project and...and 105 against. the public hearing starts at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning at the boone county fairgrounds. the speaking schedule is online now. plans to develop mercy medical center's downtown campus are forcing hundreds of people from their homes. about 200 residents live at the mercy park apartments. today, the hospital says the complex is closing in september 20-16. at a meeting with residents this morning, officials said there is no rush to move. they're giving them ten months notice and will be helping them find a new place to live.. as well as offering rent and other discounts. still, many residents say they want to leave.. 13:18:58 im saddened for the people that live here. im saddened for myself because we really enjoy living here. we have a lot people have become close friends 10 mercy says the closure is part
of the hospital's development and facility improvements, but doesn't know the specific plans for the land. the veterans day ceremony in knoxville felt even more important then normal this year. citizens gathered in young's park where a controversial memorial is at. a group from washington demanded that the city remove the monument because it had a cross on it. recently the city council voted to move it to a private site across the street. today they dedicated a new monument that will replace it. the old memorial will be moved tomorrow. veterans day ceremonies here in central iowa started in van meter. a few dozen people gathered at the veterans cemetery this morning. van meter native, congressman david young, was the guest speaker. a little later people gathered at veterans auditorium in des moines. there they listened to severl members of the military and iowa senator charles grassley. grassley brought up the recent issues within the department of veteran affairs.

focus on which candidate can beat democrat hillary clinton in the race for president. christ christie was in eastern iowa at the same time. the new jersey governor stopped by a cafe in bettendorf. he focused on drug addiction in the the u-s. christie says drug addicts need to be treated -- not incarcerated. he said putting one drug abuser in jail costs about the same as treating two. i'm running for president not for just that issue, but because we can make a difference in people's life and change the world and the real reason i know that's true because one person standing up to lead is the only thing that has ever changed the world. so i know it can happen. chrisite also made stops in coralville and muscatine tornado watch for eastern iowa until 6pm. strong area of low pressure continues to chug across central iowa. the strongest storms are now in eastern iowa this evening. the tornado threat continues with those storms. some wrap around rain will swing through central iowa later this evening. it is now going to become very windy. a high wind warning will go into effect by 9 pm and last through
