thanksgiving travel is well underway... this is a live look at the west mixmaster where the traffic is little heavier than usual.. but still not too bad. good evening. i'm dan winters. and i'm sonya heitshusen... this year's thanksgiving comes amid travel warnings and the threat of terror. but the obama administration says families shouldn't change their plans.. president obama and homeland security director jeh johnson both tried to reassure the public today... it follows u-s state department's world wide travel alert earlier this week... both say the alert only applies overseas.. and that there are no credible threats of terror within the u-s... na-49we 13 "so as americans travel this weekend to be with their loved ones i want them to know that our counter-terrorism intelligence homeland security and law enforcement professionals at every level are working overtime. po-56we :14 we also wanna encourage the public at the beginning of this holiday season to be vigilant yourself to
be aware. if you see something say something has to be more than a slogan" as part of the travel warning t-s-a is increasing security at airports across the country... travelers are encouraged to get to the airport a little earlier because the screening process could take longer than usual.. for most of us.. the interstate will be the main mode of travel... nearly 47-million people are expected to hit the roads over the holidays... a five percent increase over last year. "we want everyone buckled up in the vehicles, make sure to watch your speed, make sure to watch your following distance, and of course don't be distracted by those passengers." if you want to avoid the traveling masses this year... try leaving tomorrow and coming back on friday. those are expected to be the least busiest days on the road. while leaving tomorrow will help you avoid some of the traffic...
causing a collision that resulted in the deaths of two men. 53 year old deanna gliem is facing four counts of vehicular homicide. police say she was intoxicated and speeding when she crashed into another car on november 15th. 60-year-old rick hummel and 59- year-old randy sonnenburg died in the crash on hubbell avenue. witnesses told police gliem was driving around 70 miles per hour - or twice the speed limit- at the time. the family says today's news is bittersweet. while they want justice for their father and uncle, they know nothing will bring them back.. 06:26:12 we're pretty happy that the lady did get arrested. i do feel sorry for her family- it's not their fault and i know they're hurting too. but it just feels like we're one step closer to having some sort of justice 24 gliem is being held in the polk county jail on a 120-thousand dollar bond. meanwhile brendan mcguinness was arraigned on first degree murder charges today. the waukee man
is accused in the shooting death of 41-year old gino risola. risola was shot and killed in the driveway of his home on november seventh. police have not identified a motive in the case. mcguiness pled not guilty today... his trial will begin on february first. at least one person will be without a home for thanksgiving --- and possibly longer after an apartment fire in west des moines this morning investigators say the fire started in a kitchen on the second floor of the sun prairie apartments shorty after 10 this morning. the homeowner was not home at the time of the fire. the unit and other parts of the building suffered extensive heat and smoke damage. firefighters from west des moines, urbandale and clive helped evacuate the 24 unit building. 495603 - i just went inside and looked at the damage and there is a lot of damage inside that actual apartment. our guess is that tenant wont be able to stay their tonight we dont know about the other people on the floor, you know smoke in the building. we need to make sure it didnt get into other peoples apartment but we are very very fortunate the fre caused at least 20 -

it might be the thing you're most thankful for... presidential campaigns are taking a break from the townhalls... news conferences.. and forums for the holiday... while the forums are taking a break... not all pollsters are letting up... earlier this month researchers at iowa state university polled one- thousand iowans... the results were released today... on the republican side.. ben carson was out front with 27-percent. he was followed by marco rubio.. donald trump.. and ted cruz. the poll also found 16-percent of iowans are undecided and have yet to pick a candidate. on the democratic side... hillary clinton is seeing nearly 50-percent support. bernie sanders was in second at 27- percent.. followed by martin o'mally at just 2-percent.
the poll was taken prior to the terror attack in paris. while most campaigns are on pause for the holiday.. they'll be back at it on black friday. that includes texas senator ted cruz. on friday he'll kick off a 3-days swing through iowa starting in greenfield. several metro fire departments are kicking off their thanksgiving a little early.. 14:21-14:34 these are the people that we... non emergency mode because there's no time for turkey in an emergency... fire fighters from seven metro departments took part in a thanksgiving feast today in urbandale. this is the eighth year for the event and it gives firefighters a chance to discuss some of the calls they've been on over the pastyear. it won't just be shoppers snapping up sales on black friday.... its also the biggest weekend for christmas tree growers...
workers at wyffels tree farm in northeast iowa were putting the final touches on the trees today.. trimming branches and removing tags... the owners say this is the season they work all year for.. and that the customers make it worth it...
