the south carolina senator never made it out of the bottom of the polls... placing in the lower stage in each of the presidential debates. today's announcement comes on the same day as the deadline for the republican to remove his name from his state's primary ballot. the madrid community is mourning the loss of a local legend. 58 year old randy hinkle died from an apparent heart attack yesterday... channel 13's jannay towne joins us now to explain what he meant to his community and the countless young lives he helped to mold. it really is an incredible legacy, jannay. those who knew coach or "hink" best admit there have been a lot of tears today... for nearly three decades, he was the heart of the tiger community and his death comes as a shock.. 13:52:38 it's like getting punched in the gut. it's just.. our community is resilient, our kids are resilient and we'll get through this 52 14:15:09 a lot of us got emotional. coming to school to today was very very hard because i know how much he cared about this school and about the madrid tigers 22 the football and track coach...

players on and off the field.. two years ago, hinkel became the 11th high school coach in state history to win 300 games. he made his mark in the classroom as well... where he taught social studies for all those years. the father of two had retired last year, but planned to keep in the lives of students.. while the shock from their sudden loss has yet to wear off, friends and students say the outpouring beyond means a lot. sharing stories about coach hinkle and remembering all of the good the pain.. meanwhile the community of

moines' "evolution nightclub" this afternoon. that's after it lost its liquor license. the "iowa alcoholic beverages division" made the decision after the death of dashawn smith. the 20-year-old was shot and killed there last month... three others were also shot but survived. on top of that... police say violence is a constant at the club... officers have responded to more than 70 calls since its spring opening. they have yet to make an arrest in connection to last month's shooting. a west des moines woman is home safe this afternoon... after disappearing this morning. police began searching for 20- year-old erica johnson around 4 a-m. a family member then found her near her home... just a few hours later. a crowd of people without a place to call home are gathering for change today... the "iowa homeless memorial & homeless rally" takes over the state capitol in a little over an hour... it's all in honor of national homeless persons' memorial day. the event -- hosted by joppa outreach -- will bring together homeless individuals and supporters to remember the homeless lives lost each year. both governor branstad and mayor

terrace. a new staple lighting up downtown des moines now has a name... cowles commons added this unique sculpture this fall... today officials announced the suspended, l-e-d piece will now be known as "swirl". it's the latest addition to cowles commons... the 12 million dollar redesign that opened this past june. swirl was designed by a san francisco- based artist.. it features more than 8- thousand l- heavy duty steel. an official lighting ceremony is set for next month. lights out for a popular christmas display is making way for a new holiday tradition... "first church of the open bible" has been putting on a light show for nearly 2 decades. but this year, they decided to do it bigger than ever... that's after flooding canceled the popular "jolly holiday lights" display for the rest of the season... in its place, organizers ramped up their beaverdale display... it now includes l-e-d lights

the church's lights come on every night at 5-30 p-m... through the new year. meanwhile some metro students are proving water doesn't ruin all december fun.... go! take a look... these central academy 7th graders got just 3 sheets of cardboard and 2 rolls of duct tape to craft their race-mobiles for the annual cardboard boat races. teams had just about one hour to put together their cardboard boats ...before hitting the water to see if they would sink or swim. five out of the six teams were successful... and it appears slow and steady... does win the race. 22:23:27:18 - 22:23:39:16 because we're the best.... we're the girl team... we put a lot more planning and thinking into our boat organizers say the event helps to promote teamwork and productivity....
