caught hundreds of metro drivers off guard today. channel 13's jodi whitworth joins us live with more. remember when some of us were wishing for a white christmas? well with that it seems like some drivers forgot the winter rules of the roads. hundreds of drivers fell victim to slick road condtitions today. the iowa car pile up between ames and story city on interstate 35.... while des moines police
here everyone will be able to celebrate christmas tomorrow thats all that matters a serious accident at south east 17 - th street and park wasn't enough to dampen one family's christmas spirit. it happened late morning after this van had trouble stopping at an intersection... it ended up sliding through it -- hitting and totaling two other cars. no one was hurt. the second snowfall of the year serves as a reminder that one can never to be cautious while driving on snow and ice 032726 - i was telling my daughter how streets can be slipperyntn th ppens. es from from califora and e would like to goome now. yes yes! e iowa state patrol has yet to make an official tally of the number of accidents today... but a spokespeowith the departmentys only minor injuries arereported. you can keep trk of road conditions at 511 i-a dot g heavier snowfall than expected
rprise... here's video shot this afternoon along interstate 35 north of ames... southbound lanes had to be shut down completely after a 15-20 car pile up made a mess of the roadway... it took crews a little under an hour to get everything cleaned up... things were still moving slow as the lanes reopened. the flakes may be falling now... but this winter's lack of snow... is saving the city money... public works says it's only spent about 10 percent of its salt budget for the year... that's about 300-thousand of the 3- point-two million the city
now. officials say most of that was used in november's snowfall. a des moines police officer is under investigation after accidentally firing his gun at the airport... it happened inside an office there yesterday afternoon. police say 23 year old brady pratt drew his gun from his holster to practice his "quick draw skills." they say he unknowingly had his finger on the trigger and fired a round... hitting the ceiling. pratt reported the incident to his supervisor... who then notified a lieutenant. police say there's now an investigation underway... 10:13:46:16-10:14:01:19 paul parizek the fact that he was practicing pholstered maneuver....our preference is those things are reserved for a approved rangfacility, we have policies sing safe firearms and obviously there is going to be a very thorgh investigation." disciplinary acons may follow after the investigation.
of tips in adeadl hit and run investigation... but they're all turning up dry. emmal jacob was crossing lincoln way in ames... when a vehicle hit and killed her. the iowa state student died later at the hospital. the "des moines register" reprts officers have fielded about 30 tips since then. police say most of them have been "generic" and not seful in finding the driver. even so... they ak the public to keep weighing in... the city manager's office tells us a traffic saety study will be conducted to determine if any further precautions need to be taken on campus... new data shows young iowans are among the best at saying no to illegal drugs. the "national survey on drug use and health" says the rate for 12 to 17 year old's in iowa is just over six percent. that's lower than the nationwide average... of nine percent. on the other hand... the study found iowa has the fourth highest rate of binge drinking... two percent above the national average of 23 percent. more and more people are calling
a special census shows the population has grown by nearly seven thousand people since 20-10. according to the "des moines register".. that's up 12 percent... to just over 63-thousand people. the city conducted the special census to get more ro-use tax funds from the state. thagrowths kepig contruction crews quite usy all throughout the area... the des moines register has compiled a list of the projects that will re-shape the metro most in 2016... it names 13 construction projects... the following are some of the largest. they include new housing, a new downtown hotel, and major shopping growth in western suburbs and ankeny... the new year will also bring new retailers to jordan creek mall... oakley will open a store there this summer. it's the sunglasses retailer's first iow store. and "anthropologie" is expected to happen in latjanuary.... the clothng retaileris a division of the popular "urban outfitters." a local company is getting new busines from the hawk's rose bowl appearace...but you mightbe

"metro waste authority's" winter tree collection runs from december 28th through january 8th. one green "compost it!" sticker must be attached to each. stickers are a dollar 25 and are sold at grocery, hardware, and convenience stores. trees must be free of
iowans can celebrate the new year alongside a white house hopeful... democrat bernie sanders is hosting a new years eve party next week. it'll take place at the "des moines savery hotel" in the "savery ballroom." it's free and open to the public... though r-s-v-p's are recommended. sanders will campaign in iowa... in the days leading up to the party. a metro lottery winner in iowa is without his prize this evening... the 20-year-old was supposed to be the winner of 100-thousand-dollars but was denied his prize because of his age. he is now facing underage gambling charges. police say he purchased the ticket at a convenience store here in des moines. that store is now also facing suspension for failing to check the man's i-d. after taxes, he would have taken home about 70-thousand dollars... university of iowa police are giving themselves a makeover for a good cause... officer jackie anderson's mom is receiving chemotherapy for lung cancer... and doesn't like to go out in public without
so anderson shaved her own head as a sign of encouragement. then pretty soon... her coworkers started jumping on board as well.... on monday when we got together, you know, i told them i wouldn't trade any of them, that i'm really fortunate to work with guys like that, so i really appreciate them. anderson says this is her mom's second time fighting cancer. a total of eight officers shaved their head in support. a metro group is working hard today to make sure no one is left hungry for the holidays... "hope ministries" will serve about 25 hundred elderly, home bound, and low income iowans tomorrow. some of those meals will be delivered to the doorsteps of those who've reserved them ahead of time. however no reservations are necessary for the meal being served at the organization's "hope cafe." that's located along sixth avenue in des moines. it runs from noon to one-30... and finally, keeping tabs on santa is easier than ever this evening... they are images we are used to seeing in early spring.. not during christmas. homes ripped apart from tornados. all part of a powerful storm system that swept across the south and parts of the midwest. mississippi :14 - :20"this should be a joyous holiday season. for many it is not." the worst of it hit late wednesday with deadly tornados touching down in three states. in perry county, tennessee.. west of nashville.. rescuers searched for people buried under the rubble. "we spent much of last night trying to extract the people that was trapped. after several hours we were able to get them to safety." in marshall county, mississippi... a seven year old boy died when the vehicle he was in was struck by a tornado. 18 people there were transported to the hospital in ambulances with many more injured. calling it a success... they managed to disrupt operations at the nation's largest mall during holiday shopping -- and at the airport. jennifer mayerle has more. "no justice no peace, prosecute the police." black lives matter supporters flooded the light rail line to the humphrey terminal -- protesters determined to have their message heard. officers tried to prevent the group from getting in to a secure area. the airport shutdown security checkpoints for a short time in case protesters made it inside. another group
of stood hand in hand blocking the road leading to terminal 1. nats - black lives, they matter here. the move snarled traffic -- and stopped people from being able to get to the airport. the effort was part of a larger coordinated protest in six cities around the country. the group started at mall of america. and even before protesters arrived, businesses closed in anticipation of the disruption. some temporarily turned customers away. yesterday i had a much busier
