waking up to cloudy skies and cold temperatures in the 20s this morning. a few snow showers are still occurring in far northern iowa this morning. there is a winter storm warning still in effect in northern iowa through 6 am. temperatures will not warm up much. highs will only reach the upper 20s. there is another chance for some light snow again early wednesday morning, as a weak disturbance passes through

iowa drivers will want to take their time during the morning commute... as you can see, all highways and interstates are at least partially covered with snow and ice. but the worst conditions are found in the southeastern part of the state... that's where the roads are completely covered. blowing snow is also expected. here in the metro... snow plows are out on the streets around the clock. it takes a lot of people. there's almost 2,000 miles of roadway out there... 750 miles of snow routes system... it's a lot to do. and it takes a lot of people to get it done. crews are targeting des moines' major roads first... then

residential side streets. and for the second time... they're putting a new tactic to the test... dubbed the "wing formation." that means up to five plows clear the street at the same time... in just one pass. another important factor in the snow removal process is the preparation before it even falls. a salt brine solution was laid down sunday... and officials say it's working exactly as it should... weve got a layer of salt brine down on all of the snow routes on dry pavement now there is layer of salt under the snow. so when the last snow plow goes over the snow routes they will drop another layer of rock salt on top of that last little bit that can get scraped off officials say most of the roads should be clear by now. many flights are still waiting for the "all clear" to take off from des moines... as you see here, the delays and cancellations keep rolling in at the "des moines international airport." most of the runways here are clear... but that's not the case at some

it's bad news for hawkeye fans trying to get to california in time for the rose bowl. as channel 13's mike dasilva reports... those who are grounded will likely stay that way for awhile. 'we were going to chicago and from chicago to lax, so it was a direct flight from chicago but its the flights coming in i guess. they dont get the planes coming in so they cant take them out.' scott helling of ames, and his mother marlene have tickets to the rose bowl...but their flight was canceled...and this wasn't just about seeing a football game...the trip had an extra special meaning. hurt. but the family, like thousands in eastern iowa, are without power this morning. some are dealing with both blizzard and flooding conditions... i've been sick to my stomach. i can't take my medicine. i just don't know what to do. and it's still supposed to come up higher. in missouri... heavy rain sent already swollen rivers surging over their banks. it's the same story in oklahoma.. and it's all linked to a single weather system. at least 24 fatalities can be attributed to the system so far. the list could grow even longer... as the storm moves northeast later today. meanwhile... cleanup continues after tornadoes swept through texas over the weekend. at least 11 people were killed... eight people in garland alone. there, officials say most of the victims died when their vehicles were lifted off a highway, then dropped. the e-f four tornado brought

hour and destroyed more than six hundred structures... mostly homes. police are still looking for a suspect in a deadly des moines shooting. it happened at an apartment complex on south union street sunday night. officers found 36 year old tacono conner dead in a hallway... along with 37 year old amy stolki, who's expected to survive. police talked to several witnesses... but are looking for a person of interest that they say can provide crucial information into what happened. they have not released that person's name. this is the city's 21st homicide of the year... the highest number since 19-95. the one thing that we've identified that seems to be common throughout many of these is there are some volatile interpersonal relationship. we believe in this case it's something similar. everyone knew everyone involved. there is something personal there. they are not random acts of violence. police say the other 20 homicides this year have all been closed. des moines police are asking for

the suspect is wanted in connection to five robberies... spanning over two weeks. the latest happened yesterday at this "git n go" on easton boulevard. police have released surveillance pictures from the different stores... those include the "kum and go" on hubbell and a different "git n go" on urbandale avenue. some of the stores were targeted more than once. the man is described in his twenties... standing about six feet tall and weighing 200 pounds. if you have any information... call police or the "polk county crime stoppers." a judge has delayed the trial for a former lottery official... eddie tipton was previously scheduled to stand trial on january 6th in des moines... but the former "multi state lottery association" officals attorney asked for a delay. tipton is accused of rigging jackpots in several states. he pleaded not guilty to charges of "ongoing criminal conduct" and "money laundering." he will now stand
