it's no doubt a special experience for all of them... but for one iowa family it's also "spiritual." reid chandler joins us .. reid...you talked to the family today... and they're doing this in honor of a lost loved one? we first brought you this story nearly a year ago...one young man from lake city, writing daily letters to the love of his life..a girl he planned to propose to before she tragically lost her life in a car accident. now, he and her family are headed to the rose bowl to fulfill one of her dreams. they say a lot can change in just one year. andrew lauver of lake city knows that to be true more than most. "i wish she wouldn't have left so soon, it doesn't make sense, and i ask myself why a lot." - andrew lauver, 'love

we first told you lauver's story last february... after losing the love of his life, chelsey henkenius, in a car accident last december. lauver wrote love letters to chelsey every day... "chelsey henkenius, you are the love of my life. i first saw you at an elementary school concert and you took my breath away." - andrew lauver, 'love letters,' february 2015. now, a year later, lauver and chelsey's family are on their way to the rose bowl, fulfilling one of her dreams... "in 2013 it would have been, we were watching some of the bowl games - chelsey and i - and she had said that someday, when she was out of school and things, that she wanted to take her dad to the rose bowl." - andrew lauver - lake city, ia now he's taking her dad, plus her mom and brothers, to the rose bowl in her memory. buying the tickets in october, before even knowing if her favorite team - the iowa hawkeyes - would be playing. "as time went along, the hawkeyes kept winning, and they kept winning, and now of course, they're in it. so, it's just a dream come true from that standpoint." - andrew lauver - lake city, ia lauver says along with his bags, he's packed chelsey with him for this trip... their flight out of

canceled tuesday, the family found themselves on a road trip through denver. "i'd say there's a lot of divine intervention that's taken part in this trip, and maybe there's a reason we didn't get on that plane yesterday morning. maybe she's the one that's behind that as well." - jim henkenius - chelsey's father awaiting their flight thursday morning, lauver and chelsey's family decided to take in the natural beauty denver has to offer wednesday... repping chelsey, and her hawkeyes, along the way. "i told her that i would not wear a hawkeye shirt. she once asked if i wanted one for christmas or something, and i said, 'well i'm not going to wear that.' because i'm a huge iowa state fan, i graduated from iowa state. so i specifically told her that i would not wear one, and now i have four of them in my bag on this trip that i'm now wearing. so she definitely has gotten me good from that standpoint." - andrew lauver - lake city, ia chasing after one girl's dream, even after she's gone... as chelsey's loved ones will tell you...she's never truly left them. for them... lauver bought chelsey a stanford sweatshirt a few years ago...now, that sweatshirt is with him along with his new hawkeye apparell, as the two teams face off in the rose bowl chelsey dreamed of going to. in other news... des moines police need your help locating a man who ruined an christmas for a family on the city's east side. they're hoping you can identify this man... captured on the family's home security system. they believe he's driving the black vehicle seen here. investigators believe he followed a mail carrier to the home on east 33rd street... then stole the packages left behind. those packages contained christmas presents for the kids who live at the home. well one thing that is unique about this is we got some good surveillance video.

identify him. then obviously you take an interest when children are involved. somebody ruined these kids christmas." if you can identify the suspect... call des moines police. iowans will gather tonight to remember a well known radio personality. 54 year old cheryl pannier died suddenly at her home on christmas day. she co-hosted w-h-o's "dick and cheryl show".... which airs saturday morning. she was also the station's assistant program director. visitation is scheduled from five to seven tonight at "iles west over chapel" in des moines. her funeral will be held mount olive lutheran church in des moines at 10:00 hundreds gathered today to remember an iowa native... killed in afghanistan last week. funeral services were held for new york police detective joseph lemm at st. patrick's cathedral. lemm grew up in bernard, iowa,

he was a 15-year veteran of the n-y- p-d and a member of the air national guard. he serve in afghanistan and iraq. lemm was one of six u-s servicemen killed last week in a suicide bombing outside bagram air base. he was 45-year-old and leaves behind a wife and two children. now facing formal assault charges.... bill cosby made his first court appearance today. what his alleged victim says he did to her... and cosby's response.. when we come back. and a little later in the show... the rose bowl is more than a century old... andy fales will tell us how it all began in a live report. he played a funny... family man on t-v.... today, bill cosby

to answer to claims of sexual abuse. dozens of women have come forward... claiming cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them. now... for the first time... he's facing criminal charges... nbc's chris clackum has the latest from philadelphia bill cosby is being formally charged in a sexual assault case ...that's coming from just one of the more 50 women who accuse him of drugging and/or sexually assaulting them. "there is one charge filed, aggravated indecent assault which is felony of the first degree." the incoming district attorney

stacey cohan reports. these are the scenes missouri rescue crews fear will persist in the coming days. check out these dramatic pictures near the meremac river outside st. louis...one of numerous drivers who needed to be rescued. officials are repeating their message -- stay off flooded roads. we've never seen water this high, and when it goes above records, not by an inch but by two or three feet, you don't know exactly how far that water is going to go. millions of people across the midwest and south are in areas with flood warnings. officials fear the mississippi and other waterways could cause flooding worse than the great flood of 19- 93....when rising water caused $15 billion in damage. some in the flood zones say this time -- things feel different: normally somethin' comes in and you got like a week or so to prepare what's going on and this is just instantly here as they have done many times in the past -- volunteers in the saint louis area are sandbagging flooding-prone areas. we're just trying to pay it forward, i know that florissant has had some issues with flooding before as well and then people came out to help us, it's just the right thing to do. these floods...the latest punishment from a huge storm system that has

experts say the current el nino weather pattern is to blame -- it's caused similar disaster in other parts of the globe as well. i'm stacey cohan reporting. from illinois to louisiana, more than 18-million americans are in the path of the widespread flooding. authorities say a florida sheriff's deputy shot a man during a traffic stop this morning. the incident happened in the town of madeira beach. the pinellas county sheriff says 26-year-old dylan tompkins-holmes was handcuffed in a police vehicle when he grabbed the deputy's gun. the sheriff says a struggle ensued, with the deputy taking the gun back and firing two shots. tompkins-holmes was hospitalized with wounds to his wrist, thigh

expected to survive. the deputy was not hurt. former "glee" actor mark salling is accused of possession of child pornography... salling was arrested yesterday at his los angeles-area home on suspicion of possessing child pornography. "crime watch daily" reports an l-a police task force served a search warrant at the home. neither salling nor his representatives have commented on the arrest. salling played noah "puck" puckerman on "glee" from 2009 until the show's cancellation earlier this year. four secret service agents were injured last night in new hampshire after a car crossed over the center lines... and hit the secret service vehicle head on. the four agents were taken to a local hospital... the driver of the other car, 45-year- old bruce danforth, died at the scene... it is not know why danforth crossed over the double-line... officials say the agent's injuries are serious, but not life threatening. another round of snow this morning caused a few minor accidents this

people who failed to move their vehicles off of snow routes. city officials say nearly a thousand tickets have been handed out since monday. that may go up... because public works employees can now issue tickets. it used to be only traffic enforcement officers could write a ticket... while you may not like getting a ticket... public works officials say it's good for the community.
