johnson told police he got lost.. and started following another car to find his way out of a dead end... that's when someone in that car got out and shot him in the shoulder. no arrests have been made in the case. the trial of a clive murder suspect has come to an unexpected halt. 26-year old joe lopez is charged with killing his girlfriend's one- year old daughter... the little girl suffered a skull fracture and broken ribs. lopez claims she fell from a high chair, but medical experts disagree. yesterday, the girl's mother claimed during her relationship with lopez, he raped her. that forced the judge to declare a mistrial... because the claim could sway the jury's decision. a new trail won't happen until may. a marion county community is in need of assistance on the streets... the town of melcher-dallas is down to just one -- part-time -- police officer... after four officers abruptly resigned this week. city leaders aren't saying what

last week, governor terry branstad released a proposal extending a 20 year sales tax put in place in 2009, moving the end date to 2049. the sales tax helps education infrastructure, which would still get $10 million of funding every year, however; governor branstad wants the additional income from it to go toward helping the water qality goals of the state. he teamed up with a few superintendents from around the state as well as multiple agricultural groups to sway the legislature. the iowa department of agriculture is also looking optimistically at the proposal. iowa secretary of agriculture bill northey says, "we're excited to see several proposals, certainly the governor stepping forward as well, but several proposals looking at long term stable funding for the water quality initiative. i think it recognizes that this is not an overnight program that's going to be solved in one or two years. it's going to take some real dollars to do it. but we're seeing great engagement by producers even in a tough financial time." northey says, "i think it's very important for the ag community to continue to push to say we are engaged. we and our business. we as farmers.

syria and iraq. the country has been a staunch ally of the u-s and the battle against islamist militants.... but defense officials say they won't increase efforts. they may still contribute more humanitarian aid... since it joined the campaign against isis, australia has been on heightened alert for attacks by home-grown radicals. chipotle says its e-coli crisis is coming to an end. the company met with officials from the centers for disease control and prevention last week. now the c-e-o says the restaurant chain is hopeful they'll declare the months-long outbreak over. it began back in october and infected dozens of people in nine u-s states. chipotle says it's taking additional measures to make sure its food is safe... like having more of its ingredients go through centralized kitchens. meanwhile, the company is prepping a new marketing campaign for next month that's aimed at luring

the stage is set this morning for the republican's first debate of 2016... cruz.. trump... and five others will be on the main stage for the fox business network debate. it begins at eight o'clock. just three candidates are taking part in the undercard debate. senator rand paul qualified for the debate... but is boycotting the event because he is not on the main stage. hollywood's best will have their eyes glued to the television this morning... oscar nominations are announced this morning... this is video from last year's nomination announcement in hollywood, california.. the 88-th academy awards ceremony will be broadcast live on february 28- th.
