warehouse at 17th and center went up in flames... that's just across the street from the fort dodge fire station. crews have been working non-stop since then to keep flames down... they even called in help from webster city and used a ladder truck... to help put out the flames from above. but crews say their work is just beginning. that's because the warehouse was full of tires. they can smolder and easily reignite. and burning tires weren't the only concern for firefighters. a nearby group of propane tanks actually exploded at one point. crews are calling it one of the worst fires they've seen in years... this is a big fire. fortunately they are few and far between. and think the last big was a church downtown that burned a few years ago fire officials say it could take days to put out fully.. until then, they'll monitor the wreckage for hot spots. one firefighter did suffer a minor injury... no word yet on
fire. meanwhile fort dodge police have arrested the man behind a bomb scare... 40-year-old tyrone fudge is accused of throwing a fake bomb-like device inside a home sunday. police say it was an object with a lighter attached to it. authorities then searched his home and found a similar device... fudge is now charged with "simulated explosive violation" and first degree harrassment. the news of a deadly house fire in boxholm is hard for students at one elementary school. this morning marks the first day back to class for southeast webster students since a house fire that killed three students. amber sorenson... and her children... 9-year old riley.. 6-year old autumn.. and 4-year old brayden were killed. yesterday school leaders at the elementary school met with students to deliver the hard news. today the district plans to have a crisis team available for all students and staff. restaurant owners in strawberry point are getting support after
went up in flames. here's a look at the aftermath. the restaurant has been in business for about seven years... one of the owners spent about 30 years in the restaurant business in florida -- but decided to come back to her hometown and open her own restaurant. her friends say it was a huge part of their town... des moines corrections officials have come under fire this morning... when someone is leaving the facility there is always a plan in place officials say it's the parole officer's responsibility to supervise offenders when they leave a work release facility... but things didn't go as planned friday... when a registered sex offender left
ross clouse was sentenced to 10 years in prison back in 2009 for sex abuse and indecent contact with a child. he was under mandatory supervision... when he left friday. now local victim abuse advocates fear he'll strike again. his choice is to remain gone and his victim and other people who have been sexually assaulted, not by him but just in general.... that is their fear that they have that their offender will come back or knows where they live once found -- clouse will likely be put back in prison. once found -- clouse will likely be put back in prison. if you know where he is, you're asked to call police. meanwhile a marion county sexual assault suspect has been found after nearly a decade... 44-year-old james murphy is accused of raping a woman at knife point in 20-08. police were able to get d-n-a evidence after the alleged attack.. and in 20-14 finally matched it with another sexual assault case. murphy is now charged in both
governor branstad is continuing his effort to put fewer minorities behind bars... yesterday he spoke at the des moines botanical garden for a martin luther king junior ceremony. branstad called on lawmakers to make racial disparities within the prison system a priority this year. his message was echoed by another speaker at yesterday's event ... polk county district judge odell mcghee. "it has been several years since dr. king marched on washington ... content of their character rather than the color of their skin ... why has it been so difficult to embrace and live out dr. king's dream?" mcghee is one of just five african americans to be
