patchy fog is think along the western border of the state this morning. this afternoon will be windy and warmer with highs above the freezing point. there is a chance for a brief light wintry mix this afternoon across northern iowa. temperatures will begin trending upwards in the days ahead. we'll go to the mid-30s today to the mid 40s by the weekend. the storm everyone is talking about should hit the state hard by late tuesday of next week. the storm is still pretty far out for exacts, but there could be some measurable

making waves in the presidential playing field, days before the iowa caucus... donald trump is now refusing to take part in tomorrow night's debate, for one main reason. i'm not a fan of megyn kelly. i think she's a third-rate reporter. i think she, frankly, is not good at what she does. and i think they can do a lot better than megyn kelly. and so i am going to be making a decision with fox, but i probably won't bother doing the debate. the debate is hosted by fox news and is set to take place at des moines' iowa events center. trump later confirmed what he hinted at in marshalltown to the washington post. instead, trump says he's planning a different event, benefiting the wounded warrior project. ted cruz is challenging trump's decision to drop out... i want the job you're offering, but i ain't willing to answer your questions, i'm not willing to come in front of you. i think i am more important than the people who are going to hire me. that's what a candidate is saying if he's saying he's unwilling to stand in front of you and ask

cruz invited trump to a one on one debate with no moderators ahead of the caucus. there's been no answer so far from trump. republican ben carson hopes his faith will help him stand amongst his peers... carson took part in an event at the metro's heritage assembly church of god. dozens of supporters packed the pews. carson said they should vote for him because he's not a politician... it's one of the reasons that i will never be a politician because politicians do what is politically expedient and i would rather do what's right. it's much better to do what's right and lose an election than to do what's politically expedient and lose your soul. carson said he hopes the evangelical voters will turnout for him on caucus night. turnout is what democrat bernie sanders says the caucus will come down to... look obama in 2008 ran a campaign which is really going to stay in the history books. it was an

separated by 5 percent. candidates are searching for last minute support on the iowa campaign trail. ten candidates will make a combined total of 24 stops throughout the state. that includes all three democrats. on the republican side it's rick santorum, carly fiorina, mick huckabee, jeb bush... marco rubio, ted cruz, and john kasich. we are now just five days away from the caucus. candidates aren't the only ones putting in work in caucus crunch time. the city of des moines is readying itself for the national spotlight... channel 13's josh nguyen joins us live from downtown with the details. josh, all that work pays off. things have changed drastically over 30 years. they used to be nervous about accommodating crowd but now with business up they don't do much to change. they will see an

one person was inside at the time it started, but got out safely. officials say there are more than 90 firefighters at the scene. we'll keep you updated on the situation throughout the day. a nearly decade old double murder case has been solved. officers arrested 28 year old chirstopher yenger and 27 year old zachary dye yesterday. both are charged with two counts of murder. police say the two intentionally set a this house on fire in rural wapello county. nathan messer and seth anderson died of smoke inhalation. the fire's cause couldn't be determined, so the case went cold until new information surfaced... here recently information was brought forward that alleged the fire was started intentionally by the individuals that were involved in physical altercation at the residence. the suspects are being held in

we're learning more about the death of a former football star from iowa. 27 year old tyler sash was found dead at his oskaloosa home in september. an autopsy later determined sash died from "accidental mixed drug toxicity." but the "new york times" is reporting he also had an advanced degree of "c-t-e." that's the degenerative brain disease caused by repeated trauma, and featured in the movie "concussion." sash's "c-t-e" is similar to that of former n-f-l player junior seau, who killed himself in lieu of depression. sash played safety at iowa for 3 years, he also won a superbowl with the new york giants. the last time the iowa hawkeyes were looking this good in the big ten this late in the season was...well, it was a long time ago. and things got even better last night as indiana lost at wisconsin. iowa is
