first on 13... the republican candidates share a stage once last time before the iowa caucuses. the stage is set for the debate in des moines, but it didn't happen without conflict. eight candidates were set to take part in the "fox news event." now it's down to just seven... because frontrunner donald trump has other plans... channel 13's josh nguyen is following that story this morning... he joins us live at the iowa events center, where the debate will be held

replaced the debate with another event.. it's a rally to benefit veterans and it takes place at the exact same time. that's 8 p-m, at drake university's sheslow auditorium. doors open at 5. trump hasn't said which veterans organization the money will go towards. but additional details are expected soon. donald trump's decision is ruffling the feathers of one of his rivals... 8 o'clock saturday night, a 2 hour one on one debate. now if gentle donald cannot handle megyn kelly how about for a moderator instead, mark levin. in west des moines, ted cruz again invited trump to a one on one debate. cruz said they could take questions from audience members if they couldn't agree on a moderator. he even proposed a venue, "western iowa tech" in sioux city. however, other republican rivals don't mind trump's absence on

obviously, the fewer people that there are, the more time you will actually get to explain things. well, you know, most of his life he's been a democrat, maybe he'll go to the democrat debate instead. he's somewhat mercurial and unpredictable so maybe he'll show up for the democrat debate. rand paul's criticism of trump might ring a little hollow... he boycotted a debate earlier this month because he didn't qualify for the main stage. donald trump is bringing the iowa hawkeyes back into the headlines... vote for trump, go hawks! in iowa city, trump called some football players and wrestlers to the stage. they presented him with a jersey that had his name on it. the move had some questioning if it violated university or n-c-double-a rules... kind of weird to use a university's football team to connect to the students. i understood why they did it, i just didn't particularly like it. doesn't really bother me. i am not really a supporter of him, but

that is the point of america, i guess. officials say athletes are encouraged to be part of the political process... but their opinions don't represent the entire university and team uniforms and logos can't be used. tyler sash's mom is questioning the sport that helped lead to his death... i went to his apartment after the game and he had a full suit on and he was laying in bed and he was hands up to his head and i thought, is this not a concussion. it was more than a concussion...it was "c-t-e," a degenerative brain disorder caused by repetitive brain trauma. sash had at least five

playing football. the finding provides sash's family some answers to his sudden death in september. an autopsy determined it was due to "accidental mixed drug toxicity" but "c-t-e" is a condition where damaged brain cells begin to strangle healthy ones, leading to dementia. sash suffered from advanced stage of the disease, though he was only 27 at the time he died. his mother hopes his death can lead to more awareness about the dangers of football. the disease can only be diagnosed after death... sash is the 98th athlete to be diagnosed with cte post mortem. thousands of others, including many nfl stars, are believed to be living with it right now. doctors are trying to find ways to detect "c-t-e" in living athletes... they are investigating ways to do different mri studies to try and find if they can look for things
6:06 am
but even if there is a way to diagnose it, there is nothing they can do. the disease has no treatment or cure... doctors say they best way to prevent it is to avoid head injuries or activities that might cause them. that's exactly what the "junior football league" in ankeny is trying to do... the league requires kids to be in 3rd grade before playing tackle football. and when they do, coaches push the proper tackling technique... a flag football league is also offered for those up to 7th grade. our numbers have grown, one of the few leagues in the country that have grown due to the flag football concept we brought if a player does suffer a concussion, the "iowa athletic association" requires a doctor's permission to get back in the

i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message. the weather today looks similar to yesterday with highs staying above average. the biggest difference with the weather today is the wind. the winds will be out of the nw making it feel a few degrees cooler. well see a mix of sun and clouds over the next several days. the winds will shift toward the south for friday and saturday and that will help us reach the warmest temperatures so far this year. sunday will bring a chance for a light rain/snow mix, but this is not expected to be significant. the bigger system will move in for tuesday when there is a potential for higher snow totals. being that it is still nearly a week out, there is still great uncertainty with this next system. it is a large storm setting up for late monday through early wednesday. we are expecting measurable snow with some totals over 6' by wednesday. high winds and the extra snow will make travel difficult for the tuesday

there are those who say we cannot defeat a corrupt political system and fix a rigged economy. but i believe we need to lift our vision above the obstacles in place and look to the american horizon. to a nation where every child can not only dream of going to college, but attend one. where quality healthcare will be a birthright of every citizen. where a good job is not a wish, but a reality. where women receive equal pay
