most of the year. >> wisn 12 news time now is 5:59. the news continues right now. >> breaking news, fire damages two homes near sherman park. >> investigators are looking into whether it is related to the incidents in the area. we are going live to tim elliott for the very latest. tim, what are you learning out >> well, ben, melinda, we are at 50th and wright. we are near the sherman park neighborhood. it is unclear where the vacant house fire is related to the unrest we have seen in that neighborhood. we want to show you the video from the morning. firefighters were called to the scene on 50th street just after 4:00 this morning. when arriving to the street,

it is determined the the home was empty at the time. the fire spread to a nearby home. six people were inside of the home at the time. they were evacuated. i spoke with the family this morning and everyone is okay. they are thankful thern able to get out in time no. mention of a cause here this morning. authorities are saying it is too early to tell. we are staying on the scene and bring you updated information that we come morning. reporting live from the north side "12 news this morning." >> tim, thank you. authorities were out in full force overnight in the sherman park neighborhood. >> there were no other acts of violence or vandalism. several people were arrested overnight. again, we are told there were no

mentioned. >> authorities took two big steps to cut down on the number of people walking in the park, including putting up fences. thema is live near sherman and burleigh. thema? >> well, melinda, we are outside of this bp gas station that burned down saturday night. you are seeing the damage here. also an officer here on the scene. we have been here throughout the morning. we are across from sherman park. that is one of the this orange fencing is up this morning. the park was supposed to open at 6:00 a.m. as for last night and this morning, we are told no major acts of vandalism or violence reported. the police staging near the park this morning. that is just down the block where a man was shot and killed by a police officer.

news and they don't condone the violence. now as for the bigger picture, the police arrested a number of people and forced the crowds of people to leave the area. no significant problems were reported. back here live, the orange fence is still up. we did see one of the yellow vehicles put up we have not seen seens of the fencing coming down here. we are continuing to keep an eye on things throughout the morning. the park is scheduled to open at 6:00 a.m. >> thema, thank you. the decision to close down the park and the boys and girls club in the park is not sitting well with some in the neighborhood. the sheriff's deputies cleared the park and put up the snow

last night and members of the community association are saying it is likely to make things worse because of one last place to go. >> i think that we need to have activities. the issue is the go on lock down and get out, and encourage the people to come out of the homes and come and participate and help to have ownership. >> the park will every day 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. >> the second step, a curfew for 17 years old and younger, that curfew expired at 5:00 a.m. the leaders think that is one of the reasons of relative calm overnight. now the curfew is in effect 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. the police chief and the mayor

and mentioned it is a mostly peaceful night. they are crediting family, community and faithful groups in helps keep the young people off to streets. >> they have taken very, very seriously the cur fee going into effect tonight for those under the age of 18. >> the cur fee is continuing until further notice. no reports of for the officers or civilians. two people were hurt during the unrest over the weekend. a 16-year-old girl and 18-year-old man. eight milwaukee police officers were hurt as were four sheriff deputies. nick sat down with police chief flynn to talk about coping with the stress. flynn said this has give tennessee officers a chance to bond with the communities they

a chance to work together in teams and teams forge bonds and the work they are doing is necessary. >> now, amid all of this, 45 new police recruits began the journey to become milwaukee police officers and were sworn in yesterday and spending the next six months training. >> the investigation into the police shooting is in the hands of the wisconsin department of justice. there ma release of the body cam. the police say that smith was holding a gun as he was running from a traffic stop. now the officer that shot sho and killed him, the spokesperson is saying in the light of the unrest they are working to release the video. mayor barrett, chief flynn and governor walker say they think it should be released as soon as possible.

the set weighs and met with the police officers at 49th and north and thanking them for the work. he also stopped by to thank members of the national guard. they remain on stand by. >> right now, six people arrested overnight by the milwaukee police, but no reports of violence or sherman park is closed from 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. and a curfew for 17 years old and younger from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. until further notice. the measures put in place after a violent weekend. eight milwaukee police officers and four sheriff deputies were hurt. this followed the deadly

fire at 50th and wright. it is unclear right now if this fire is related to other incidents in the area. >> we are going live to tim elliott with the latest information. tim? >> milwaukee fire department is busy here this morning at the intersection of 50th and wright. the house is a half block down the way here. they have been very bu fire over the weekend in the area. we are not sure if this is connected to the unrest. that is being investigated. going to the video here, the smoke and flames coming from the home there. six people were evacuated from a nearby home and they are all safe. the investigation into the cause

>> 6:13 now. sherman park was closed overnight because of the recent incidents in the area. it was rescheduled to reopen 15 minutes ago now. we are going live to thema. >> well, good morning, ben, it appears that sherman park is still closed from where we are standing. this orange fencing is still up. it was put up last night around the park. we are at the corner of sherman and burleigh. this entrance is not yet opened. it was supposed to open at 6:00 a.m. the only scene we have seen thus far is a man cutting the grass. we have seen people going down the drive to the boys and girls club. that is thot closed. but the park is closed. we are helicoptering to keep your eye on things and we'll let

4:00 this morning. >> the investigators are looking into whether it is related to other incidents. tim? >> ben, melinda, the fire officials are not saying this fire is suspicious, but could it be connected to the unrest happening in sherman park. it is too early to tell on that note right there. we are going to the video of what we sa w scene. heavy smoke and flame shooting from the home on 50th street in milwaukee. the firefighters attacked the fire immediately from the air. they found that the home was vacant. no one was inside at the time. the fire was intense and spread to a nearby home and six people were inside of the home and sleeping and the firefighters evacuated the family. five adults, one child and got

investigation. the red cross is on the scene here this morning and helping the people displaced by the fire. the firefighters are wrapping up this scene here over the past 45 minutes or so. this street should be re-opened coming up shortly. we are staying on the scene and looking into what caused the fire. we'll keep you updated all day long >> thank you. a large police presence in the sherman park neighborhood. the police dispersed a few crowds of people and made some arrests following the two days of arrests. >> overnight a curfew. >> it is a precaution and apply

we are next to the park here. this orange fencing remains up. it was put up around 6:00 last night. the park was scheduled to reopen at 6:00 a.m. the grass cutter is here and two people here. officials say that sherman park will be closed 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. every day until further notice. the people that wisn 12 news spoke with are not happen i about the fencing going up. >> sherman don't deserve this. we don't deserve this. that's just not fair. >> this is not going to change anything. this, this right here is going to make everything worse.

the milwaukee police and the sheriff and the wisconsin state patrol. back live here at sherman and burleigh, we have not seen signs from where we are stationed that any of the fencing is coming down. we'll helicopter to watch things this morning. for now, live in milwaukee sherman park neighborhood. >> thank you, thema. 6:34. >> tensions have been high in milwaukee for the last three days leading to unrest and violence. sunday night saw crowds clashing with police. news chopper 12 was over this confrontation in sherman park. chopper also caught this moment sunday night when an officer was hit by a rock. you can see him fall and other officers help lead him away from the area. >> on saturday when the unrest first began, seven businesses

it was destroyed. firefighters had to keep their distance because of gunshots in the area. news chopper 12 flying again sunday night. this car was set on fire which led to an explosion. this all began when a police officer shot and killed a suspect on saturday afternoon. according to police, sylville smith ran from a traffic stop. he had a stolen gun with him. during the chase, an officer shot smith twice. he later died. this all happened at 44th and au chief ed flynn says the officer who fired the shots is african-american and his body camera was working. the wisconsin department of justice is leading the investigation and will decide when that footage becomes public. >> new from overnight, family of the man killed by police gathered near sherman and auer just down the block from the shooting scene. police were also staged in that area. relatives and friends prayed near a makeshift memorial. they told wisn 12 news

>> right now louisiana is dealing with a flooding disaster. a woman and her dog is safe this morning. the rescue is caught on camera in baton rouge. the workers getting to the car when going they tried to break the windows and pulled the woman to the surface just as the car goes under completely. this man was able to pull the window open and pulled the woman to the surface. then they went back for the dog and got the animal to safety too. >> new this morning, tornadoes rip through parts of indiana. now we're getting a look at the damage left behind. the national weather service confirmed that tornadoes hit

>> welcome back. we are following breaking news. >> fire d sherman park neighborhood. the fire reported around 4:00 this morning at 50th and wright and the fire started in a vacant house and a second neighboring house was damaged. the investigators are looking into whether it is related to the recent incidents. we have more coming up. >> if you're just waking up, it's been a quiet night and morning in milwaukee's sherman park neighborhood. police have not reported any

although there were some arrests and lingering crowds. there was a mandatory curfew in effect for people 17 and under. the park itself was closed and a fence was set up around it. this follows two days of unrest, saturday night and sunday night. >> turning now to rio de janeiro and the olympic games. right now the u.s. is number one in the medal count by a big margin. american athletes have won a total of 75 medals including 26 gold, 23 silver, 2 china comes in second with a total of 46 medals, 15 of those are gold. and great britain is in third place with 16 gold medals and 41 total. >> for tourists at the olympic games, sugarloaf mountain is a must-see. the iconic spot is visible from rio's beaches, but you have to go to the top of the mountain to really get a breathtaking view. wisn 12 news' nigel robertson made it to the top.

park. >> covering the games is exciting and we had to get out and experience rio. so we went to the top of sugar loaf mountain. i tell you, it is the best views yet. towering into the sky at this one spot where the atlantic ocean meets the city, sugarloaf mountain is breathtaking. so is the ride to the top. >> i'm >> we found jonathan goodson from indiana in the crowd of people getting ready to take the cable car up 1300 feet into the sky. >> i like the heights. >> the ride smooth. if you get a good spot, the views, well, take a look for yourself. once at the top, you get a view of copacabana beach, guanabara bay and the rio harbor.

the extra and nose would be stuck in it. >> they handled the squirrel gingerly, as you can see. it is a wild animal. >> well, early today, some clouds around. the sun is trying to peek through. we look at a mix of sun and clouds. there we are clearing nicely. this is mounted at discovery world. right now, the winds are and north and for a good chunk of the day. some time after 3:00 we see the winds shift up out of the south. the clouds are exiting nicely and becoming party sunny. low pressure. we are not done with the shower chances, a trough of low pressure sailing across the state tonight and triggering a few stray showers.

lunchtime, a few clouds going. the model is squeezing a few daytime showers. but 9:00 tonight we keep our eye to the west, a few showers pivoting through after mid night or so. a little rain going and thunder this. this is not a big deal. we move into wednesday and we look at once again a mix of sun and clouds and spotty showers chances again during wednesday especially tomorrow afternoon. we are looking at warmer air moving in as well. so today 83. but then a 80s for thursday and friday. dryer thursday. warm and humid. on friday, 80s. the cold front is holding off until saturday and seeing a good chance for showers and storms and that ushers in a much cooler
