here on wisn 12. he was a revolutionary turned dictator, ruling cuba for decades. tonight, people are asking what's next now that fidel castro is dead. news of castro's death inspired an immediate celebration in miami's little havana, home to thousands of cuban people. they're going on just about 24 hours now, celebrating in the streets now. castro passed away last night at the age of 90. abc's lana zak takes a look at his impact. lana: this is the scene from miami's little havana a few hours after the stunning announcement of fidel castro's death at 90. he was born on august 13, 1926 in oreinte province, cuba. as a child, he was educated at private catholic schools, and later went on to study law at the university of havana. castro became an activist for the poor and promised democracy, but went on to rule cuba for more than 40 years with an iron fist.
convinced communist. i feel honored of being a communist, and i hope i will be to the last breath. lana: in 1960, castro joined forces with the soviet union. the u.s. retaliated by breaking off diplomatic relations with cuba and imposing a trade embargo. in 1961, president john f. kennedy approved a cia invasion force of 1300 cuban exiles who went ashore at the bay of pigs. castro was able to fend off the invasion, but in 1962, american spy planes discovered he had alloweth nuclear missiles in cuba. >> i have directed the armed forces to prepare for any eventualities. lana: u.s. naval vessels moved in and the soviets backed down in exchange for a pledge that america would not attack cuba. the soviet-style economy castro promoted eventually produced dissent. in 1980, thousands of cubans braved rough seas and dehydration to reach america in the mariel boatlift. in 2006, castro temporarily handed over some of his powers to his younger brother raul as he battled health problems, but
even before his death, there were many changes in cuba, reestablishing diplomatic ties with the u.s. and president obama's historic visit there earlier this year. and now the world will now likely see even more changes with fidel castro gone. adrienne: both president barack obama and president-elect donald trump are reaching out to the cuban people. president obama's statement says in part, ?we extend the hand of friendship to the cuban people. history will record and judge the mo singular figure on the people and world around him.? now as for trump, he said this, ?it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful cuban people finally live in t freedom they so richly deserve?" fidel castro's death is stirring up a lot of emotion among those with ties to cuba. former madison alderman ricardo gonzalez fled the island nation 56 years ago when castro came to
begin a new path. >> it is my hope truly that before i pass on to the next world that cuba and the united states will have found a way to normalize their relations and to live in friendship. adrienne: ok so here's what's , next. cuba will observe nine days of national mourning. fidel castro's ashes will follow the same path between havana and santiago that he took during the 1959 revolution. he will be buried in santiago on december 4. and, the weather is about to change, get a little bit wet out there. lindsey is watching the forecast. lindsey: some areas see upward of an inch of rain. adrienne: holiday shoppers think outside the mall, the huge amount of money spent at small businesses today. and talk about a hazard, we'll tell you where a car ended up on
