it is the first day of a brand new school year here in milwaukee. milwaukee public schools students are heading back to class. deandra corinthios is live from sherman multicultural arts school with more on what the district has planned. student year this morning around 730 am..with mps superintendent darienne driver...milwaukee mayor tom barrett...the state superintendent as well as teachers and parents teachers across the district have been busy putting the finishing touches on their classrooms this week. mps has about 75 thousand students...and about 9 thousand staff members. at sherman multicultural arts school...the welcome event will highlight

and humanities focused program designed to increase student achievement...and mps is the only district in the state selected to participate... four mps schools are part of the program, superintendent darienne driver has spoken about her vision for the upcoming school year in recent weeks. she wants to improve reading and math scores. close the achievement gaps between students of different races.. and expand mps arts and athletics programs. we're expecting to learn a lot more about her plans to accomplish this...today. and they are rolling out the red carpet at nicolet high school for the first day of class. here is a live look at teachers and staff welcoming the students back for a new school year. also happening later today --- a former teacher's aide accused of raping a student is expected in court for a plea hearing. 31-year-old jason price was arrested in april... accused of both rape and sending inappropriate pictures to others. he has been charged with seven felonies. price already resigned from holy spring. his plea and sentencing is scheduled for 8:-30 new this morning --- a bomb scare at the walworth county fair ends up being just a pair of drum sticks. last night elkhorn police and the walworth county sheriffs office say they got reports of a suspicious looking plastic pipe. the fairgrounds were quickly evacuated. the bomb squad was called in and verified the item was safe. no one was hurt. the all clear

night in the sherman park neighborhood. this comes after several arrests in area this week. police say neighbors have been complaining about large groups gathering near a memorial for sylville smith who was shot and killed by police nearly three weeks ago. smith's brother says they have been peaceful and they will continue to gather in he area of 44th and auer until body camera footage of his brother's death is released. 03:28 y'all want to know why we're gathering here everyday? because we want justice, we want that camera footage, we want that body cam smith's brother says he plans to meet with the sherman park community association later today to address his concerns. and the recent problems in the sherman park area are nothing like the unrest we saw nearly three weeks ago. when protesters set eight businesses on fire and clashed with police. now a new marquette university law school poll is looking into the recent violence on milwaukee's north side. nicole is in the newsroom with details. the new marquette university law

recent violence on milwaukee's north side. and here's what they found. 37-percent say the unrest was mostly due to anger at decades of disadvantage for black communities. while less than half said... its a lack of respect for law and order that caused the unrest in milwaukee. when asking registered voters about police in your community. the overwhelming majority, 86-percent, say police make them feel 'mostly safe'. the numbers differ, however, when broken down by race: safe with police... but among african americans or hispanics, its 57-percent comfortable and 37-percent anxious. when you break it down by region, people polled in the city of milwaukee feel more anxious about police than any other groups.... but still overwhelmingly safe. the packers-- expecting to start making the final cuts tomorrow. but first-- the green and gold have their final preseason game tonight.

tropical storm hermine is racing towards the sunshine state --- and become a hurricane before making landfall later today. it's already having an impact ... with heavy rain and winds. flooding is forcing many from their homes. florida governor rick scott says it's been awhile since the state has seen a hurricane... and is warning people to be prepared. scott says: "we have potential for tornados. if you're look at where this is going, this part of the state could get the brunt on the south and east side of the center of the storm." meantime ... two storms are moving towards hawaii... the national weather service downgraded madeline from a hurricane to a tropical storm... hurricane lester... about a thousand miles from the hawaiian islands... is expected to be downgraded as well. both storms are expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the island. and weather expert stephanie barichello is here with more on

wauwatosa police on a high speed chase is expected in court today.. police say 40-year-old lucas byrd almost hit 100 miles per hour in the august chase.. it lasted 2 miles-- and ended on a sidewalk! at the time of his arrest-- byrd was already wanted for a probation violation. he was just released from prison in may. his preliminary hearing is scheduled for this afternoon. the families of two men killed in a crash are holding a protest later today. 25-year-old deangelo maxwell and struck and killed at 6th and mckinley last month. the driver of the truck who hit them was initially arrested...but has been released from custody. a medical examiner's report indicates "two open bottles of alcohol were noted in the back seat of the truck" and "a marijuana pipe could be seen laying on the ground..." the victims' families are frustrated the driver has not been charged..and plan to walk to the courthouse from 6th and mckinley tonight starting at 6. walk to the courthouse from 6th and mckinley tonight starting at 6. now the latest on the slenderman

race is tightening --- donald trump delivers his much anticipated speech on immigration reform. doug luzader breaks it down from d-c this morning. let's start with the numbers this morning. a new fox news polls shows that when you factor in third party candidates, this is now down to just a two point race nationally, and even just looking at trump versus clinton, the numbers have tightened. but that's before you factor in what happn trump taking the stage in phoenix to talk immigration, serving up the kind of red meat that first put him on the path to the g-o-p nomination. trump: we will build a great wall along the southern border and mexico will pay for the wall. that hard line bookended a day that began with a meeting between trump and mexican president enrique pena nieto -- where the tone was a little friendlier -- even from pena nieto, who once compared trump

consumers complained of finding plastic bits in the treats. at least one injury is reported. some of the products have been sold in wisconsin. the problem was traced to a manufacturing failure at a contractor's bakery in illinois. to see which snacks are involved in the recall - go to fox6 now dot com. the centers for disease control and prevention says funds to fight the zika virus are running out. the c-d-c director says there will be no money to fight a new outbreak of the zika virs approves more funding. the c-d-c has sent about 35 million dollars to florida ... and much of that has been spent. . senate republicans have scheduled a vote on one-point-one billion dollars of zika funding for next tuesday. democrats oppose that package because it excludes planned parenthood from the list of providers that would get new funding for contraception to combat zika's spread through sexual transmission. a new poll out today finds that the zika virus has many americans concerned about going places in

ne 5-10 mph a football legend...now has his very own exhibit. the green bay packers and packers hall of fame hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the lambeau field atrium. the exhibit honors favre's time with the team, recognizing his most memorable moments. highlights include a wall display of the regular season starts over 19 nfl seasons. number 4's pro football hall of fame speech is also played on a tv in the exhibit. lloyd wettstein, donated to favre exhibit "he reminded me a little of myself when i was younger... not the athletic ability but ya know, you have this excess energy that you have to exert some place and he did it on the football field." the packers say number four's exhibit will be on display for at least a year.
