the weekend. >> thanks so much. we get started with the latest efforts to move past the scandal affecting d.c. city council. council members will select an interim chair today. this will replace kwame brown resigned last week over fraud investigation. there's a debate over who should get that title. john gonzalez is at the wilson building to explain. >> good morning. it has been a tumultuous time for the city council, filled with scandal and corruption. later this morning, the city council will try to move past that as they elect a new chairman for this council, which has gone through a lot in the past several months. this is someone who is well- known and well-respected inside city hall in northwest d.c.. a large councilmember phil mendelson is in his fourth term. he has said in the past that he does want this job.

even though he is expected to face some opposition and competition, especially from vincent orange, this no-nonsense type of member appears to be a shoe and today. mendelssohn is expected to take over for kwame brown, who resigned last week after pleading guilty to bank fraud. it is the second recent council member to step down. earlier this year, harry thomas, of ward 5, was sentenced to 38 months in prison after embezzling public funds. at 10:00 this morning in a legislative meeting the city council will try to start a new chapter and end this musical chairs and try to create some stability. reporting live, john gonzalez abc 7 news. >> thanks so much. she is the latest prince george's county official to be convicted of misconduct. maryland delegate tiffany alston found guilty of misdemeanor theft and misconduct in office. a jury concluded the democrat

what to expect. >> and other emotional day. prosecutors once again continuing to present their case today in pennsylvania. the jury was said to be in tears yesterday as one of the victim's aunt the former coach took the stand. sandusky and mike mcqueary used to stand together on the sidelines. in court yesterday the two were face to face once again as mike mcqueary testified in 2001 he saw something he did not want to see it. he claims that he saw sandusky standing behind a young boy who was against the wall in a school shower and and heard a smacking sound. he told the jury that he slammed the door to make noise but did not do anything to stop the alleged encounter. >> he told the jury i'm sure about it and there's no mistake that this was extremely sexual in nature and it was something horrible. >> the testimony came after an already emotional day in court for an now 18-year-old known as

victim one tried to fight back tears as he testified how encounters with sandusky during sleepovers pack a coat's home included kissing fondling, and oral sex. jurors reportedly broke into tears. >> anyone in the courtroom who saw him crying could see the pain that it took him to get his story out. >> sandusky is accused of abusing 10 boys over a 15 years. these are allegations he denies. the trial is expected to last three weeks. brianne carter, abc 7 news. >> the search is over for the man wanted for saturday's deadly shooting that happens near auburn university. "go montgomery" alabama defense attorney arranged for desmonte leonard to turn himself in last night. police say the shooting followed a fight over a woman. two of three people killed were

graphic testimony today in the child sex abuse trial of former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. one of his alleged victims testified yesterday about house and as he started abusing him when he was 11 years old. the former assistant coach mike mcqueary also testified about how he saw sandusky abused a young boy in the penn state locker room shower? in 2001. sandusky is accused of abusing 10 boys. he denies the charge. >> a jury will resume deliberations this afternoon in a perjury trial of roger clemens. they began deliberations today after a day of closing arguments in the ninth week of the trial. he is charged with lying to congress in 2008 when asked if he ever used steroids and human growth hormone. if jurors cannot reach a verdict today, they will take off until monday because the judge is going on. a business on >> prince george's county executive rushern baker has formed a new education commission. he says the 12 members will advise him on ways to improve

the county schools. he will make a formal announcement about this today and will offer plans to work with the school board to extend the county science, technology, and the engineering and mathematics programs. >> metro is renaming one of the red line stations. jummy olabanji explains the reason for the change. >> good morning. last november, the metro board voted to change about half a dozen station names, make them a little easier. today, this one will be changing to noma-gallaudet u. later this morning they will be joined by d.c. government officials for the official ribbon cutting. signs have already changed to reflect the new name change. noma refers to the part of the district that is north of massachusetts avenue and between first street nw and

first street northeast. they wanted to rebrand area similar to soho in new york city. there's a brand-new hotel in the area. new york avenue will still be attached to the station names for the next year so customers can get used to the transition. after that, new york avenue will go away completely and noma- gallaudet u will be permanent. this is one of several station name changes that will be happening this summer. coming up, we have king street alexandria changing to king street-old town. navy yard will change. next year you'll get a whole new list of names to remember when the silver line is completed. jummy olabanji, abc 7 news. >> we're looking at 67 degrees this morning in capitol heights.

tahman bradley, abc news >> . the homeless man whose face was shooed off in a bizarre attack in florida is doing better -- chewed off. ronald poppo is in good spirits and talking and walking with the help of hospital staff. the 65-year-old has been hospitalized since being attacked along a busy highway last month. a police officer shot and killed his alleged attacker. he will be in a hospital several more weeks and will need several more surgeries. a nutley, new jersey, a tanning salon is now facing $5,000 in fines. inspectors accused it of 33 violations including over exposure. most of the charges are related to one patron who allegedly ha d 24 tanning sessions in the month of march. they not said whether that person is patricia krentcil.
