making news in america this morning, striking back in the empire state. hillary clinton and donald trump are closer to clinching after the big victories in the new york primary. another candidate is now mathematically eliminated from winning the nomination before the congregants. we have complete highlights and analysis ahead. breaking overnight the water crisis in flint, michigan, soon to be a criminal case. the charges coming today against city officials. caught on camera. some tensions erupt after a school over a gender neutral bathroom. a tv crew filming in a remote area stumbling on the castaway stranded on a desert island.

a good wednesday morning to you all. we begin with front-runners back on track after easily dominating the new york primary >> that's right. donald trump and hillary clinton both celebrating resounding victories in their home state, regaining momentum following a string of bruising losses, now they're a step closer to becoming their party's nominees and their rivals have an even slimmer chance than ever. >> trump was back looking for ab outsider and straight talker and won with 60% of the vote and picked up nearly all of new york's gop delegates. >> ted cruz moved on to pennsylvania and it's mathematically impossible for cruz to clinch the nomination before the congregants. >> trump celebrated at trump tower in manhattan and abc's tom llamas is there. tom. >> reporter: huge night for donald trump. so much excite many. trump with a huge win in his home state of new york telling me it was a special moment that there was a lot of love in new

thank you new york. we love new york. >> reporter: he made three key points in his speech. one, he was so impressed by the big margin he won by and two calling for senator ted cruz to step aside. >> we don't have much of a race anymore based on what i'm seeing on television. senator cruz is just about mathematically eliminated. >> reporter: though cruz is convinced he can win at the convention and finally third he's going to keep working hard. >> we are going to be so strong again, we are going to be really i mean legitimately so great again and i just can't wait. >> reporter: today he'll be on a flight to indianapolis to start campaigning for that primary which votes in two weeks and, of course, focus on pennsylvania which is the next big contest. >> tom llamas, thank you. now to the democrats. hillary clinton says the race is in the home stretch and victory is in sight. >> clinton defeated sanders by a wide margin with the help of wome a

voters and tried to appeal to sanders' supporters telling them there's more that unites them than divides them. sanders headed home to vermont after campaigning in pennsylvania. he congratulated clinton but complained that independents can't vote in the new york primary. abc's cecilia vega has more from the clinton victory party. >> reporter: diane and ryan, this was the win that hillary clinton not only wanted, it was the win that she needed after a string of recent losses. the victory speech that she gave here in manhattan was very much a pivot toward the general election, we heard her extend an olive branch to the supporters of bernie sanders saying that there's much more in common that unites them than that divides them and laser focused on what seems to be headed for a general election race against donald trump and mentioned him. >> we're going to go up against some powerful forces that will do and spend whatever it takes to stop us. >> reporter: as for berni

too needed, a must win in new york and he did not get that. he needed to win delegates here in this delegate rich state and now it appears that the battle for him could be a losing one. >> there are five primaries next week, we think we'll do well and we have a path toward victory. >> reporter: he is promising to stay in this race through the convention this summer. he will continue to likely hurt hillary clinton as she heads towards this general election but she is celebrating a big victory here in new york calling this one, diane and ryan, a very personal win. >> personal indeed. now that the primary is over the city of new york is planning to audit the board of elections after widespread reports of voting irregularities. >> more than 125,000 voters in brooklyn reportedly were removed from the voter registrationle ares. there's concern over faulty ballot scanners,

election workers and polling places that opened late. the candidates are looking ahead to the next five races on tuesday and the front-runners are breathing a sigh of relief as they regain their footing. >> abc's rick klein tells us what it all means. good morning, rick. >> reporter: diane and ryan, new york, new york, home sweet home for both hillary clinton and donald trump. their shared home state doing exactly what they needed it to do, deliver big resounding victories to put their candidacies essentially back on track. what new york does not do is clinch the nomination for either one of them. they will have spirited challenges ahead for donald trump despite his delegate sweep in new york, a contested convention. a very real, maybe likely possibility going forward and for hillary clinton, having bernie sanders part of this race but both of them beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, both of them able to exalt with a victory in their home states and right now the momentum that had been shifting to challengers is now back with the front-runners. donald trump and hillary clinton now riding h

diane and ryan. >> thanks, rick. it's back to business, most of the candidates are hitting the road again today as next tuesday is another big primary day. >> that's right being called a mini super tuesday. primaries held in connecticut, delaware, maryland, pennsylvania and rhode island. >> and stay with abc news for the latest on the new york primary. live team coverage later on "good morning america." breaking overnight the first criminal charges in the flint water crisis are being announced today. at least two state regulators and a flint employee are expected to face felony and misdemeanor charges for 18 months the city's water was not properly treated which released lead from aging pipes. people have been using filters and bottled water for the past few months. >> it's believed that at least eight people have drowned in this week's floods in houston. several died when they drove on flooded roads despite signs and barriers. thousands of homes have been damaged and their

possessions destroyed. many roads remain impassable. the slow-moving storm will bring more rain to most of texas and louisiana. there was a tornado warning overnight further north near ft. worth. that area getting nearly an inch of rain in 13 minutes. >> seems like they can't catch a break there. still ahead exiting obamacare, the biggest insurer announces big plans with its future over the affordable care act. >> aftershocks still rattling nerves, one happening during a reporter's interview. tempers flare after a school installs gender neutral

129-year-old church on the move in springfield, massachusetts. the first spiritual church was slowly rolled about 200 yards all to make room for a new mgm casino. the building and equipment used to move it weighed 500 tons collectively. president obama arrives in saudi arabia today for what may be the most tense of his four visits there. relations have been strained by the administration's outreach to iran and the conflict in syria.

fidel castro has made what may be his last public appearance. he told members of cuba's communist party he will soon die but urged them to continue his ideas. castro noted he will be 90 years old in august and it was his first public appearance in many years. they re-elected his younger brother raulers for another ter the death toll from that earthquake has passed 500 but many more bodies are buried in the rubble. efforts are now turning to removing debris, restoring electricity and burying the dead. those efforts are being complicated by continued aftershocks like this one which hit while abc's linzie janis was speaking with an official. >> we have -- [ speaking a foreign language ] >> oh, a

up. >> the obama administration is downplaying an announcement by united health care, the country's biggest health insurer, the company will exit most state obamacare exchanges by next year. the company's ceo said the market for exchanges in those states was too small and exposed united health care to too much financial risk. the company previously said it could lose up to half a billion dollars this year on those exchanges. a vigil was held last night in texas to remember murdered fitness instructor missy bevers. her body was found inside a church in midlothian. she was there to set up for a class. police released more surveillance video of the suspect dressed in police s.w.a.t. gear. experts say he should be easy to recognize given his distinctive walk and mannerisms. a so-called bathroom that barred a teen has been overturned by a federal appeals court. kevin grimm was born female but en

ruling says his high school policy barring him from the boys room was discriminatory and could be still appealed and may have implications for a similar new law in north carolina which critics say is also discriminatory. and things got a little rough outside of a high school in los angeles. students at a high school that recently installed gender-neutral bathrooms and some adult protesters scuffled. no one was injured and one person was detained. meanwhile, tracy morgan canceled an upcoming show in misbecause of that state's religious objections law. the law takes effect july 1st. it will allow some businesses to deny services to some lgbt citing religious beliefs. his scheduled performance was next friday. johnny manziel is ready for football but needs to find a new agent. his former representative drew rosenhaus has dropped him as a client because he says manziel has failed to make changes in his lifestyle. manziel says he's taking care of

vote 20-16 and the big apple brings big victories for hillary clinton and donald trump. the republican presidential front-runner has captured more than 50 percent of the vote in the new york primary, and is headed toward a big delegate haul in his home state. clinton also inked a big win over new york native bernie sanders. with the wins-- both clinton and trump increase their delegate lead over their fellow candidates. we'll have much more on the race and reaction from the candidates, coming up in a just a few minutes. today marks one week since the disappearence of a local firefighter. crews are scouring the shenendoah national forest for nicole mttendorf. her car was found in that area over the weekend. friends and relatives have started a "find nicole" facebook page which has generated neraly 12-thousand likes. mittendorf was reported missing friday after failing to show up

for work at station 32 in fairfax station. right now police say there is no reason to suspect foul play. stay with abc-7 as we continue to follow the search. in the day ahead .. a prince george's county community will say a final goodbye to firefighter john ulmschneider. he was shot to death friday night- as he and a colleague entered a home to check on a man in temple hills. hundreds of fellow firefighters and loved ones- attended a 3-hour visitation last night. ulmschneider's funeral will held later this afternoon. there is a little bit of a shake-up coming to your morning t-v. former football star michael strahan is leaving "live with kelly and michael" to work full-time on "good morning america." strahan has been sitting beside kelly ripa on "live" since taking over for regis philbin in 20-12 -- and has been working at g-m-a as a contributor a few days a week. a search for his replacement on live' will begin in
