this morning on "world news now" the midwest is getting hammered by a deadly ice storm. cars are unable to get any traction on some completely iced over roadways. and that system continues to march east. we'll have the forecast just ahead. >> and we're learning more about the terrifying ordeal club goers went through in mexico. one american has been killed as we hear from a texas man thankful to be home. >> and new this half hour, what first kind of looked like a dinosaur creeping out of a florida marsh. >> it is. this is an alligator. what we're finding out this morning about that beast that's lighting up the internet. >> huge. and the high drama that lit up last night's episode of "the bachelor." can you guess who fell asleep during the rose ceremony. someone else got the

how did a bouncy house and a bart bag factor in? we have more in "the skinny." from abc news, this is "world news now." nothing sends you back to bed like a barf bag. >> it worked out well for her. we'll tell you about that coming up. we'll start off with the nasty winter storm. parts of 16 states from colorado to maine have winter weather alerts. areas of the central plains seeing snow and others with freezing rain. >> that makes for icy roadways. it doesn't make much for cars to skate across roads into accidents. in la crosse, wisconsin residents didn't need vehicles to skate on the streets. there's been a serious side of the storm. nine deaths over the weekends. hundreds of traffic accidents and a major traffic disruption.

chicago. >> reporter: from colorado to maine, residents on alert for a wintry mess. meanwhile the southern side of the storm spawning tornadoes. a big rig driver spotting this funnel cloud in houston. this surveillance video capturing the storm's power. at least 30 homes and this skyscraper damaged by storms in dallas where hundreds of fans were forced to shelter in place after the packers cowboys game. this truck going into an icy lake. everyone is okay. the coating of ice snapping trees and knocking out power to thousands in several states on a weekend that saw danger and death on slick roads. one kansas trooper narrowly escaping after swerving to avoid an out of control semi. another truck bursting into flames in nebraska after crashing into another vehicle. both drivers survived. at least nine killed on slippery

here in chicago drivers are dealing with rain and dense fog and in parts of the upper midwest, they're bracing for up to a quarter inch of ice. alex perez, abc news, chicago. and as we mentioned, that storm is making travel very dangerous. >> that's right. let's get the complete forecast from paul williams. good morning. >> good morning. we have slower travel expected along 95 because of rain. a touch of ice into western new york and northern portions of pennsylvania. cincinnati throughout all of the ohio valley region into indianapolis and indiana up toward chicago wet roads. kind of wet. to the west, total different story. another push are the river of moisture in the upper atmosphere. wednesday to saturday, heavy snow between one to three feet in addition to what we've experienced there. and a heads up, in the west midportion of the workweek looking for another set of widespread heavy showers along the coast causing fldi

cabinet picks, secretary of education who lacks government experience but has been active in politics and education in michigan, betsy devos. meanwhile, ryan zinke will be in the hot seat for secretary of the interior. we're seeing signs that the obama family is getting ready for their new home. movers took some of the soon to be former first family's belongings into the nine bedroom home they'll be renting in d.c. they're staying there at least until their youngest daughter finishes high school. and u.s. marines are setting up residents in norway. it's about 600 miles from the russian border. the move is raising cold war worries since it coincides with people being sent to poland. a spokesperson says the

presence has nothing to do with russia. an american dead after gunfire in a mexico. the victim is an 18-year-old college student of denver. her brother says she was going to school and working to help her mom. a texas man who survived the shooting returned last night to the airport in houston where his mother was waiting. he was shot in both hands and said he never expected his vacation to end like this. >> i'm very grateful to god that he gave me the life and the strength to get out of that area on time before anything else worse happened. >> he says he was with a woman when she died and he's in a state of shock thinking about her and others lost. a florida fireman fighting for his life after trying to rescue three workers underground. the three man died from toxic gas fumes.

hole in the florida keys while trying to fix a roadway. the fireman went in without his air pack because the hole was too small to accommodate the equipment. and there are concerns right now this morning that thousands of los angeles families may have had their health information breached. l.a.'s children's hospital says a laptop stolen from a doctor's car may have held information for as many as 3600 patients. families are being notified this week. officials believe the data may have been erased. and the social network that started with six second videos has died on the vine. >> the vine social media network app shut down at midnight. it was replaced by vine camera. >> new, okay. >> a rebranded app that will allow you to post your short videos now directly to twitter, but the separate social network is gone. that's what created stars. >> and previously posted vines are on an archive in twitter which acquired vine.

that dats dates back five centuries. local officials say none of the animals are harmed in the process. >> all right. well, here at home another kind of animal was turning heads inside a florida nature reserve. it's an alligator. but not just any alligator. this one is estimated to be 13 feet long. and possibly weighing up to 1,000 pounds. there it is caught on camera by a group of hikers. it just looks like it's lazily sauntering around. one marsh to another. >> look at the people in the back. what are they doing? >> they are trying to capture this moment on camera. at great risk, i would think. he also doesn't look like he's ready to run very fast. let's be honest. >> i've seen one that big, by the way. >> you have? >> for nightline i followed a family of gator hunters and i saw one 700 pounds. >> and we're -- a tip from the people who saw this. >> we're calling him godzilla. that's what he looked like going across the path.
