overnight. for the second time in two days-- russia's president vladmir putin is speaking out on the growing tensions involving north korea. overnight-- putin called for talks with north korea, and added that sanctions are not a solution. earlier, u-n ambassador nikki haley said the united states would push for more sanctions against north korea following it's largest nuclear missile test to date. north korea said it detonated a hydrogen bomb underground on sunday. the move was condemned by world leaders-- including vladmir putin. german chancellor angela merkel and french president emmanuel macron said they planned to tighten european union sanctions. in north carolina-- the so-called "cold medicine killer" is back behind bars. police say matthew phelps told them that he stabbed his wife to death because he took too much cold medicine. during his first court appearance, a judge told phelps he could receive the death penalty or life in prison if

medicine phelps used says there's no evidence the drug can lead to violent behavior. happening today in upper marlboro.. sentencing is scheduled for a man who murdered his wife and wounded a man who tried to help her. eulalio tordil pleaded guilty to last year's shootings that happened outside high point high school in beltsville. the day after the shootings, tordil went on a shooting rampage in montgomery county. he killed two people and wounded two others. he was sentenced in july to life in prison without parole for those crimes. developing now in the district.. police say a 12-year-old girl will not be arrested for stabbing a male classmate at her high school - because of diplomatic immunity! this happened at the british international school of washington in northwest. that diplomatic status means no charges now- but investigators say they will look into the case and turn it over to prosecutors. the boy's injuries were not life threatening. a health alert this morning for people in prince george's county. crews are set to spray more pesticide after a mosqui

charges set to make a court appearance. the trial against new jersey democrat robert menendez begins today. he's accused of taking bribes from a friend in exchange for his help in disputes. that includes: private jets, weekend gateaways in the dominican republic, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions. menendez says he's done nothing wrong and pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of corruption, including bribery and fraud. new this morning.. a big decision on the future of a statue of confederate general stonewall jackson in charlottesville.. the city council voted unanimously last night to move the statue from justice park. but it will remain there while a lawsuit over it and a statue of robert e. lee plays out. both statues were covered with a black tarp, after the death of protester heather heyer during the city's august 12th riots. the tarps have since been removed. happening today- a major milestone for the wawa franchise. officials are breaking ground today on the district's first

overnight-- hurricane irma makes landfall in the carribean. the category five storm is prompting evacuations and disrupting travel from puerto rico to florida! while it is still too early to say where the storm is going. lawmakers are telling people to prepare right now. janai norman has more on how people are preparing. the search for a lost pet ends in gunshots.

between neighbors is likely headed for a court room. before last week-- tasha chapel owned two tortoises. one of them, merlin, escaped from her yard. chapel spent hours looking for him. she says a man who lives nearby eventually called her, and said he'd shot merlin, after the the tortoise wandered onto his property. he claims he feared for his safety. chapel is now sharing the

for merlin." she's asking people to buy t-shirts.. to help with any legal fees. both neighbors have reportedly retained attorneys. a seven on your side health matters -- about what could be a big breakthrough for diagnosing alzheimer's disease. a new study published this week claims researchers created a blood test that lets them identify the disease. currently -- alzheimer's can only be diagnosed from other factors -- including brain scans and mental testing. the test still has to go through years of evaluation, before making its way to patients. d.c. has the highest mortality rate in the nation from breast cancer. and women in wards seven and eight are especially at risk. but "breast care for washington" is working to change that. the non-profit is located in southwest d.c. and it's the only facility east of the anacostia with three-d mammography. the non-profit is helping women, whether they have insurance, or not.
