now - hurricane irma making a slow march up north florida. the storm, weakening in just the last two hours but still packing a powerful punch. fierce winds and heavy rain soaking the state. and a test for tampa as the hurricane hits. good morning washington i'm adrianna hopkins in for autria godfrey. and i'm larry smith. we have a team of stormwatch-7 meteorologists and reporters covering this storm. let's start with meteorologists eileen whelan and veronica johnson 2am nhc update: irma category 1 hurricane

4-point-5 million are without power - that number expected to grow as irma continues to barrel through florida. all major florida airports are closed and its not yet clear when flights will resume. and the storm is blamed for 32

will rush in and could be deadly. right now there are significant threats of more storm surge flooding along the entire west coast of florida. now let's send it over to ryan hughes at the hurricane alert desk those images - show the brute strength of this storm. the storm now a category one still nothing to take lightly as it continues it's way across florida. irma's strong winds ripped down trees and power poles. take a look at this scene in riviera beach... a downed power line is being blamed for causing a massive fire at industrial and west heron boulevard. that's in palm beach county on the east coast of florida. the power line may have also fallen onto a vehicle and set it on fire. some areas you see roads turning to rivers... other areas you see this... the water receeding from hillsborough bay before irma arrived. the winds so strong it started pulling water from the shore in tampa... something

before. some fisheman started lashing ropes to secure the mast of their boats. irma weakened to a category one storm early this morning, but her winds fiercely roared through daytona beach. reporters out covering the hurricane...findi ng it hard to even stand. this is c-n-n's sara sidner holding on tight as she experiences the power of irma. she had a hard time talking but said the winds are beyond ferocious. the national hurricane center says irma's impact will reach as far north as georgia, tennessee, alabama and south carolina today. coming up on good morning washington - remembering nine eleven. a live look at the pentagon as we mark sixteen years since the septemeber 11th attacks, still ahead.

deal with the devastation from hurricane irma.. we're remembering another tragedy. today marks the 16th anniversary of the nine-eleven terror attacks that killed nearly three-thousand people. commemoration s will be taking place in new york city, at the pentagon, and near shanksville, pennsylvania. in new york, the names of those killed in the attack on the world trade center will be read. in arlington, an american flag will be unfurled on the side of the pentagon at sunrise. president trump will speak at a ceremony there. he'll be joined by defense secretary james mattis, and joint chiefs chairman, general joseph dunford. breaking news at 5:xx out of texas - at least eight people are dead, after a mass shooting at a home in plano. and we're learning new details. neighbors tell "the dallas news".. the violence broke out during a dallas cowboys watch party. police say a gunman opened fire, killing seven people, and wounding two others. a police officer who responded fatally shot the gunman. all of those killed and injured are believed to be adults. and also

and rain in fort myers, florida from hurricane irma. right now brand new pictures are coming in. let's go to ryan hughes at the hurricane alert desk. right now this storm is moving north toward jacksvonville. this video in just moments ago - of street flooding in jacksonville. so far we have not heard of any major issues in the jacksonville area... but we are currently monitoring the situation. some unbelievable images coming out of florida showing the strength of this hurricane. these pictures out of naples, where the eye of the storm passed sunday. the rain creating white out conditions similar to a blizzard there. some reporters saying it felt like being hit with a firehose. and in downtown miami

government is responding. the acting fema deputy administrator says more than 13-thousand people from several agencies are positioned in and around florida. they include the coast guard, and the army corps of engineers. over the weekend at camp david, president trump received briefings on the

confidence in the federal response. he says he plans to travel to florida in the coming days. and happening right now - evacuations underway in the carribbean in the wake of irma. u-s military aircraft have already relocated at least 12-hundred u-s citizens out of saint martin, but many others are still waiting to be taken to safety. americans who have not yet been evacuated are being told to stay sheltered in place. as hurricane irma bears down - a somber anniversary for our nation. this morning we pause to remember the lives lost in the september 11th attacks 16 years ago today. john gonzalez is live at the pentagon, where the president will be heading in just a few hours. a live look now in new york city,
