is in our weather center tracking the storm. >> we are keeping an eye in the storm system that looks like it's going to be a couple of days before it gets here. still on the west coast and the weather we have been dealing with today is a completely different system. most of us know we had today was on the lighter side. the good news is the storm system passed to the north and east east of the most it remained relatively light and it's pushing out of here quickly. we still have a couple of flurries or snow showers and parts of the area but this one basically is long gone. we will see dry conditions at the weekend. we will have much colder air coming in with a high-pressure system that will bring a sunshine. it was a lot of cold air coming in. 36 degrees right now. we still have some clouds. those continue to break up with clearing skies overnight. it could be a few -- few theories -- few flurries. another thing you'll notice as the ones will be picking up quite a bit summer temperatures are headed into the 20s for most locations 50's in single

david sentendrey fox 46 wjzy. jenna: ncdot spent $30 million on a winter storm we had a few weeks weeks ago so depending on what we see over the next few weeks i could possibly go over budget again. we have a developing story in charlotte. an accident has knocked out power to hundreds of homes in the area. it happened a short time ago on beach not road off of west boulevard. crews on the scene say some of of -- a power pole in duke energy confirmed under 1000 homes have lost power. they do expect to have the majority of them back on by 6:30. no word on what caused the crash rate we will have an for you at 10:00. a fire in north charlotte caused serious damage leaving for people without a home. happened on the 1200 block of dearborn avenue around 10:30 this morning. smoke was coming from the house when firefighters arrived on the scene.

sure what started this place. >> i heard my grandmother screaming and yelling that there was a fire so i rushed in to help. when i went in the room i heard a popping sound and it the whole room was dark with smoke. i could not see. jenna: no injuries to report. took crews 30 minutes to put out the flame. the state bureau of investigation is now looking into an officer involved shooting that left one man dead. the incident happened at a home in maiden north carolina. felicia norris has the story. there are police responded to a 911 phonecall that a man in the sum was cutting himself in. when they arrived on scene they found 35-year-old alijah jackson in a bathroom covered in blood. officers told him to put the knife down and that's when

and what they say was a slashing and stabbing motion. killed him. feel for all the parties involved. they had to defend themselves and the people inside the residence. >> the north carolina bureau of investigation has been called in to investigate this incident. officers have been placed on administrative leave. now we caught up with a friend who lives in the home and said the victim has mental issues and the shooting was unnecessary. and something i should have been done. >> he had health issues. you have to take that into account. you are dealing with some of his schizophrenic create there are other tactics. i was in the military for eight years. we do hand-to-hand. they're impossible things you can do to restrain someone who has a weapon. you can put someone down on the

in lincolnton and stole a number of items including a credit card. man seen here is using that very card to make a purchase tipping off police. if you know who or where he is called the lincoln county sheriff's office. should the zika virus hit north carolina estate said they might not be prepared. the state's chief epidemiologist says north carolina flexed the ability to track and combat the spread of mosquitoes that could potentially carry the virus. not only that but the funding to prevent them is not available. the zika virus has been blamed for brain damage in babies across south america. there are multiple cases in the last including one sexually-transmitted case in texas. the state making a major announcement today granting duke energy a permit allowing it to drain water from its coal ash ponds. the water going into the

and mountain island lake paid carolyn joins us live outside the powerplant with what this all means. >> this means duke energy can start taking its water from coal ash ponds and popping it into mountain island lake. this could mean toxic coal ash ponds with the water so i looked at what this would mean for our water supply. if you're pouring a glass of water chances are you are one of the nine people who get their h2o from mountain island lake. >> people in charlotte-mecklenburg county gaston county mt. holly. >> duke energy can finish draining water there remains in its riverbend's coal ash ponds and pump the water into the lake. it started draining the top water but with the new permit it can pump out what's left at the bottom mixed in with the coal

the agreement does mean that desperately needed humanitarian aid may soon arrive in syria. the irs is in bad shape but with data breaches budget cuts and computer problems congress isn't thrilled with their performance. now the chairman of the house oversight committee says it wants to impeach the commission of the irs. there are investigating record-keeping and most recently a hardware failure during filing season. the irs says it needs more money to upgrade its computer system so one happen again. if the white house budget proposal is approved the agency will get more than $12 billion next year. that's $1 billion more than this year. an emergency meeting is held in michigan as leaders continue to search ranchers in the flint water crisis. governor rick snyder laid out more of his plan which includes setting aside millions of

bought for retail at about 20 bucks. i know what i will be doing on valentine's day and that is sleeping and resting and may be preparing for some snow that's heading her way in monday. amanda cox is standing by in her weather center. she is tracking the storm that could affect the commuter monday morning. >> we are expecting the storm system much closer to the area. it's off the west coast but it will be affecting our area especially for your monday morning commute. you will want to stay with us throughout the course of eating. today are for system is passed by the south and east of the pack that much of a punch. most of the activity was on the lighter side. there was a little bit of snow shower activity moving through from time to time. not a whole lot of accumulation may be just a quick dusting in a few places. high pressure to the north will be helping us over the weekend to give a sunshine but it's also went what to bring and colder air. the system back to the north and west just off the western coast is what it is eventually going to be coming in as we get into

high-pressure system is bringing all the colder air from the north pushing into the region so we will be staying in the 30s as we move through the weekend despite a good amount of sunshine across the area. not only colder conditions but also strong winds. right now temperatures in the 30s and 20s further to the north. the windchills are cooler to the north in the west as well. we expect to see the windchills being a big factor not only across the higher elevations but across parts of the areas we move through the next couple of days. the winds will be high to the north and s. but the dash west. the winds will pick up tomorrow with gusts as high as 20 or 25 miles per hour times. there's a windchill advisory to the northwest at 24 degrees overnight. we expect to see skies becoming mainly clear through temperatures in the 30s over the course of the week and we will stay dry with a high-pressure and control but here's a storm system that will

it will start off as snow or a mix sunday night into monday morning. that's why it will affect your monday morning commute but as it rolls to them monday we will see the wintry mix transitioning over to all rain. that's probably going to happen around midday early afternoon and once it goes over to terrain it will stay that way for the remainder in the system will make its way up the eastern seaboard and eventually becoming a nor'easter impacting the portion of the northeast. for her area will start off with that wintry mix and we do expect to see a good amount of snowfall in parts of the area. off to the north and west is where we will have the most likely accumulation in the higher elevations could pick up upwards of 5 inches so it's definitely something we will watch throughout the course of the weekend. a good portion of the area may be dealing with ice for slippery conditions and ridges and overpasses to freeze over first especially. it may be deceiving because freezing rain could be a big

most locations but single digits further off to the north and west. not only at the cold conditions going to be a factor but we are also expecting to see the winds picking up over the course of the day tomorrow. temperatures will hold into the 30s for most locations. parts of the area stay in the teens as well as the 20s. with the winds picking up an especially across the northwest you can see it's getting high. we are expecting wind speeds at eight to 50 miles an hour with gusts as high as 20 to 25 miles per hour and at times possibly higher than that. could cause it to feel like the teens, 20s or single digits. we have a windchill advisory across the northwestern section. temperatures on the colder site for the next couple of days but in time for that storm system notice the temperatures start to swing upward spree that will help us in the grand scheme of things because we will start off with a little bit of snow and as it comes than we are expecting to see a little bit of snow
