[real-time closed captioning provided by u.s. captioning company.] >> matt: now at 6:00, election 2016 comes to florida. three of the top candidates are here tonight, already gearing up for the state's primary. >> lisa: first, though, a breaking news alert. a boy pulled from a canal. this is news 6 at 6:00. i'm lisa bell. >> matt: i'm matt austin. the boy was 8 years old. this happened on pembrook drive where jennifer ortega is live for us this evening. i know you spoke with a mom who told you her son helped pull that boy out from the water.

she's happy her son acted so quickly to pull his friend out of the canal right here. detectives are still working the scene at the moment. now, here's some video of the area from sky 6. detectives tell us the 8-year-old boy goes to riverside elementary and cutting behind houses and through the canal to get home. this all happened around 3:30. the deputies say the boy and his friends were playing on a pipe that stretches across the canal when the boy fell off into 3-foot-deep water and his friend helped pull him out. >> someone called me and said my son, they thought he was the one that was drowning. but they said, no, he was the one that saved him because he was one of the ones that jumped in. he's the only one who knew how to swim. >> reporter: now when we got here, we saw deputies interviewing two young boys who were there when it happened. one neighbor tells us he heard children screaming from behind out. deputies are still unsure how the boys got back there.

and is county property. at last check, we're told the 8-year-old boy is in the hospital and in critical condition. in orlando, jennifer ortega, news 6. >> matt: thank you. also breaking, two people are killed in a serious crash near christmas. east colonial in both directions just past state road 520 shut down right now. sky 6 flew over the crash a short time ago. we're told two cars are involved. we'll bring you any updates as we get them. and a child is hurt in a bizarre crash. sky 6 flew over the area earlier tonight. ormand beach tell us 29-year-old ashley wilson went to a store on west grenada boulevard, leaving her 3-year-old in her suv alone. somehow the chevy blazer shifted into reverse. the child fell from the car and was hurt. the 3-year-old is at the hospital. the crash is now under investigation. a standoff and a deadly shooting. police shoot and kill a man in brevard county. >> lisa: officers say it all started when the man made threats toward construction

police came out to a home on mariposa drive in palm bay just before noon today because of the threats. news 6 reporter troy campbell is following the developing story for us tonight. are investigators still out there right now? >> reporter: yeah, it's still a very active scene. just moments ago, we saw investigators place a blue tarp near the entryway of the home. police saying this all started when a group of construction workers called 911 saying they were being threatened. >> we just saw a lot of commotion down there. you know, of course, the road was blocked off. >> reporter: palm bay police say the 39-year-old hispanic man, shot dead by police tuesday morning. construction workers saying the man threatened to shoot them. the man, refusing to come out of his home for about two hours. >> you just never know. things happen, you know. it is a nice, quiet neighborhood. but you never know what it can happen pretty much right next door to you. >> reporter: use an intercom system, an officer with the palm bay police department over eight

the officer, also a u.s. air force veteran described by the chief as an exemplary officer. >> i feel bad for him. i have a lot of law enforcement in my family. it's tragic to have to do. >> i'm really upset. because i have my 12-year-old daughter who now the cops are down there and i'm not very happy right now. >> reporter: the chief of police also says the man appeared to be intoxicated. also, the fdle is here and has taken over the investigation. live in palm bay, troy campbell, news 6. >> lisa: thank you, troy. >> matt: a driver accused of hitting a child on his bike and then taking off is locked up tonight. the 73-year-old driver faced a judge today. news 6 reporter kirstin o'connor is live in titusville on the street where the boy was hit. i know you've been talking with neighbors tonight. what are they saying about the charges this guy's now facing?

talk in this neighborhood about that accident that happened right about this time in that intersection behind us on thursday night. police say they've had the man in custody. they've him in the hospital actually to start since the crash. he was arrested last night. now that he's behind bars, a lot of the neighbors around here say they're not happy about the charges. >> he's currently charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, which is a second degree felony which carries a maximum 15 years in state prison. >> reporter: the man has been in the hospital since he crashed into an 8-year-old riding a bike home from school. people down the street say neighbors gathered around the boy after he was hit last week. now, after hearing about the charges, some say they're unsettled. >> i think a lot of them probably think that he was horrible because he didn't stay. but he did come back. and he asked and everyone said it's okay. >> reporter: in his first court

hardly hear the charges against him. the judge asking his attorney to explain. >> you may need to have to repeat to him what i'm saying. i don't know what are his hearing issues. >> reporter: the assistant state attorney, gary beatty, says some of the things they've heard from the man are inconsistent. >> according to the case report, he did get out and look and at one point in time he says he has no memory. >> reporter: when asked about age or mental incompetencecy >> until a judge finds him incompetent to proceed, we go forward. >> reporter: the judge agreed to a $15,000 bond. that's the latest out here in brevard county. kirstin o'connor, news 6. >> matt: thank you. it is super tuesday and election 2016. voters in a dozen states in one territory are picking who they want to see on the 2016 ballot.

two weeks away but already two of the three top republicans and the democratic frontrunner are turning their attention to our state. news 6 reporter eric sandoval is in miami where marco rubio is holding a rally tonight. but first, news 6 reporter mike holfeld is in palm beach where donald trump is this evening. >> reporter: as you can see, the setting is absolutely breathtaking. if the polls and projections are right, donald trump will be celebrating super tuesday tonight. the billionaire turned politician has confounded the pundits and defied the odds and the g.o.p. establishment to build a path to the g.o.p. nomination. in terms of numbers, nearly half of the 1237 delegates needed he gets them tonight. there could be one thing to worry about, one sour note if you will. texas. ted cruz has a slight edge there. that's worth 155 delegates, one state. should be an interesting night. we'll be here to bring it to you. in west palm, mike holfeld, news 6. >> matt: thank you, mike. for republicans, whoever wins

the deal. along with trump, marco rubio is focusing on florida tonight. news 6 reporter eric sandoval is in miami at the ronald reagan equestrian center. what's going on down there right now? >> reporter: well, the event doesn't start until 8:00, so they're still setting up and actually campaign workers just finished putting up the folding chairs and barricades right behind me. the crowd has already started gathering two hours before the start of this event. you can see them all lining up back there here. so when rubio does take the stage, i found out he is not planning a victory speech for winning any delegates tonight. instead, he's going to be focusing on his home state and how important it is to this primary. let's show you video from another rally he held yesterday. rubio has the stakes against him right now. he doesn't have the delegates. he's trailing behind donald trump in the polls. in miami tonight, he wants to change that. he's going to share what he calls his vision for a new american century. keep in mind.

>> matt: tonight we're hearing a 911 call a mom made moments after she says a man pointed a gun at her family. >> lisa: volusia county deputies say a man pointed a gun at them all because they told him to slow down. >> a man tried to pull a gun on us and he aimed it at us. my husband swerved to get away from him. >> do you have any idea who the guy was? >> no, we were driving down the road and he swerved in our lane and my husband honked the horn and then he bounced back over to keep from getting us. he slowed down and rolled his window down and screaming and cussing at my husband.

33-year-old man, michael sousa. the road rage happened along saxon boulevard in deltona saturday night. a 3-year-old was in the victim's car at the time. no one was hurt but sousa is now charged with aggravated assault. >> matt: there's now a new home for the original countdown clock at kennedy space center. it's now on display at the entrance of the visitor complex. the clock was previously located at kennedy space center press site, an area off limits to most of the public. it stands 7 feet tall and considered the most watched

so we've been warmer than normal now for a few days running. right now, temperatures across central florida with the sun setting low is 76 in orlando. melbourne, 72. leesburg tonight holding at 77 degrees. other temperatures, 75 does it in marion county. in ocala. 73 in palm coast and 73 in daytona beach and a bunch of 72's all over brevard county. satellite and radar together here, we have picked up a little smattering of cloud cover. but the big, big news in the weather is this cold front. causing a ruckus from middle tennessee all the way into atlanta, georgia. big snow from chicago all the way to detroit and then some rain moving through most of ohio, through the ohio valley. here at home, we get the bottom side of that front. come take a look. this is where it will be tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. troy will be here watching this stuff. i really don't think there's going to be a lot of rain. i really think there's going to be some cloud cover and maybe a wind shift and maybe like a 4 or 5-degree cool-down. i don't see you getting more
