toddler was shot and killed in their home. james and heather stepp pleaded guilty to storage of a firearm with access to children, a misdemeanor. the pair was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter for two-year-old abagail newman's death in october. the district attorney says newman was shot with a shotgun that was left on a kitchen table at the stepp's home 13:07 "this is something that both families are going to have to deal with really for the rest of their lives. clearly the parents of the child and clearly the stepps. i mean this is just something is tragic and they did not intended to happen." the stepps were sentenced to 45 days in jail, which was suspended. they must each pay a 200-dollar fine and court costs. their guns have also been forfeited to the sheriff's office. 3 3 3 3 happening today. some parents will stage an awareness walk this afternoon in downtown waynesville. they are against the haywood county school board's plans to possibly close central elementary school. the school has had falling enrollment and a budget short fall. parents against the closure say despite the school's age, central is a quality school that should remain open.
