it's friday, january 15th, 2016. this is the "cbs morning news." as the clock ticks down to the iowa caucuses, the gloves come off between the leading republican candidates. donald trump and ted cruz go toe-to-toe on the debate stage: a wound is reopened in chicago. new video shows an unarmed teenager shot to death by police. outrage over the oscar nomination. questions about discrimination when, for a second year in a row, all of the performers nominated for an academy award are white. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a little more than two weeks to go until the process of electing the next president begins with the iowa caucuses.

after more than six months of campaigning. last night in south carolina, seven of the republican candidates took the debate stage. it was the smallest group of gop hopefuls yet, and it appears to be turning into a two-man race. the latest national poll find donald trump with his strongest support of yet and he is followed by ted cruz and that set the table for tense moments between the two leaders. weijia jiang is in north charleston with more. >> reporter: donald trump and ted cruz shadowtood shoulder-to-shoulder on the debate stage. the two leading candidates providing viewers with some of the night's most heated exchanges. >> if you become the nominee, who the hell knows if you can even serve in office? jo front-runner donald trump brought his birther statement. he claims ted cruz isn't qualified to run for president because he was born to a u.s.

>> why are you raising this issue now? >> because now he is doing a little bit better. no, i didn't care before. defending the constitution before the u.s. supreme court and i'll tell you, i'm not taking legal advice from donald trump. >> is the romance gone? do you two hate each other now? >> i continue to sing his praises. i am not attacking him. i'm going to defend myself. >> reporter: cruz battled back, questioning trump's conservatism. >> pro gay marriage focus around the media. >> reporter: trump made no apologies for his tone. >> i'm angry because our country is a mess. >> reporter: cruz also took heat for failing to disclose a million dollar loan from goldman sachs used to finance his 2012

>> yes, i made a paper work error, disclosing it on one piece of paper and not the other. >> reporter: >> someone who lies to the four victims in the benghazi can never be president of the united states. >> if she gets elected, her first hundred days, instead of setting an agenda she might be going back and forth between the white house and the courthouse. >> reporter: trump refused to back down from his proposal to ban muslims into the united states but some of the candidates took a different approach to the hot button topic. >> you can't just ban all muslims. you have to ban radical extremist jihadist. >> reporter: the candidates get another chance to face off in two weeks, just days before the iowa caucuses. rand paul, who missed the cut for the main stage debate, did not attend. a number of his supporters interrupted the moderators at one point, chanting for the kentucky senator to be included. the democratic candidates will have one more chance to debate

that, too, will happen here in north carolina on sunday. weijia jiang, cbs news, north charleston, south carolina. with time ticking down until the first votes are cast, which of the candidates helped their cause last night in cbs news senior political editor gaf usve us his insight. >> a lot of fireworks and very explosive and very entertaining and interesting to see how this moves forward ted cruz in iowa. he was ganged up by donald trump and marco rubio and found himself playing defense all night. he did a pretty decent job paring the tough questions but will it have any effect on his poll numbers? remains to be seen. then there was a battle for third place. rubio and jeb bush and kasich and ben carson. rubio and christie very strong

debates and not turned into much in terms of polling for them. will it change? interesting to see what happened there. carson needed a game changing moment and didn't happen. i think they have to rely on being out other on the trail and hoping they can change voters minds while they are campaigning. i'm steve chaggarr circumstances, cbs news, new york. hillary clinton campaign is up in arms over a new bernie sanders ad. it suggests that clinton wouldn't be tough enough on wall street. clinton campaign says sanders is breaking a pledge not to run negative advertising. but last night on "the tonight show" clinton's focus was elsewhere. >> i'm elected to be the democratic nominee, i'll run whoever they nominate, but if it's donald trump, it will be quite the showdown. >> we will talk to bernie sanders about his new ad, wall street reform, and hillary clinton coming up on "cbs this morning."

with mexican drug kingping guzman is part of what led to his capture. just released text messages between guzman and kate del castillo, shows guzman didn't know who penn was. guzman was captured last friday. coming up on "cbs this morning," charlie talks with sean penn about his controversial interview with el chapo. surveillance video of a fatal shooting of a chicago teen by a police officer. a judge ordered the video released. the video is graphic and you may find is disturbing. on january of 2013, carjacking suspect cedric c chatman is pulled over.

>> as soon as the officer encountered mr. chatman laying on the ground, flips him over and steps on his foot. >> chatman's family shows the video shows he posed no threat. they have fall a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and two officers. this morning police in indonesia arrested three suspects linked to yesterday's attack in jakarta. the men were arrested near the capital. police say they recovered an islamic state flag at one of the attackers home. yesterday, men attacked a starbucks and police booth. all of the attackers and two others were killed. two navy boats ended up in iranian waters, the crew, ten sailors, were captured and held overnight and released on wednesday. secretary of defense ash carter says they have misnavigated and apparently didn't report the navigational error at the time.

breaking $1.6 billion powerball ackpot remain a mystery this morning. three tickets were sold in california, florida, and tennessee. the winners in tennessee and florida have 180 days to come forward. >> we won't know who it is until they come forward. the state law in tennessee means we are subject to open record and if we have the record, we have to release that. i can't imagine that you all won't know, right? until they come forward, we don't know. >> the winner in california has a year to contact lottery officials. coming up on the "morning news." outrage over michigan's water crisis. protesters take over the state capital to demand answers about flint's contaminated water. later the academy awards faces tough questions following the announcement of the nominations. my li'l buddy?

the driver of an suv was killed after his vehicle was struck by a train. the suv was pushed three-quarters of a mile down the track. amtrak says the lights and crossing arms were working. demonstrations in michigan over flint's water crisis and planned parenthood fights back in court. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports that planned parenthood is suing the activist who secretly recorded videos. activists claim the tape show the organizations illegally sold body parts. planned parenthood lawsuit accuses the activists of engaging in a complex criminal enterprise to spread lies. the detroit free press reports michigan's governor is

for flint's water crisis. the water game contaminated with lead after they switched the city's water source to the flint river. one councilman demanded action. >> see legislators get involved and give us the proper finance to fix our problems. >> if granted, federal assistance may help to fix the damage to flint's aging water system. the associated press reports on the utility that owns the leaking gas well in california. southern california gas understated the spike in the airborne levels of a cancer chemical cause inging substance. crews are still trying to stop. celine dion's husband and manager passed away.

month thanks in mart to a small rebound in crude oil prices. the dow rose 227 points, the s&p gained 31, the nasdaq added nearly 89 points. goldman sachs agreed to pay $5 billion to settle claims stemming from a sail of mortgage-backed securities. the settlement with the justice department and state regulators concerned securities sold in the years leading up to the housing bubble and subsequent financial crisis. goldman is one of the last banks to settle with regulators. jetblue's website is back up-to-speed this morning. online check-ins and booking services disrupted yesterday due to a computer glitch at a verizon data center. it affected the major hubs including new york, los angeles and boston and dozens of flights were delayed. there is a temporary price drop at amazon prime. amazon is shopping the price of its prime shipping and entertainment service from 99 to 73. the offer is good this weekend.

two golden globe awards for "mozart in the jungle." and hbo will air the 46th season of "sesame street." the episodes have been shortened to a half hour. some favorite characters like elmowel dsel elmo and cookie monster will get added screen time. >> it's weird. it's weird that "sesame street" will be on hbo but you will be able to watch those episodes on pbs but you have to wait nine months until you can. >> the neighborhood has gone up. >> yes. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange, thanks a lot, jill. still to come, a football
