warming up on sunday with sunshine, 71. we keep that trend going. monday, columbus day, 75 with sunshine. 70 on tuesday. a couple showers. really, the weekend looks great. enjoy it and let's go mets. >> all right. the "today" show is next. >> that's what's happening today in new york. . good morning. congress in chaos. house republicans racing to find a new speaker this morning. one day after the leading contender, congressman kevin mccarthy suddenly drops out of the running. >> i think i shocked some of you, huh? >> bitterly divided republicans now scrambling for a replacement. >> this is not the time or plac guys. >> and democrats giddy. >> anybody have any news they would like to discuss? >> what happened? who is in the running now? and was mccarthy undone by a whisper campaign? >> no. come on. >> we're live on capitol hill.
>> we have a bird strike. 79. >> 79 say again. did you see what happened with delta? >> number 2 air strike. >> a delta plane forced to make a landing. hero stabbed. spencer stone. one of the americans who stopped terrorists aboard a french train knifed nearly to death during a late-night brawl. this morning the latest on his condition and the hunt for the suspects. and a group of hikers falls into a river in new zealand when the bridge they were walking on suddenly snapped. amazingly, everyone is okay today, friday, october 9th, 2015. from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. live from studio 1a in
and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. we've got willie in for matt this morning. >> exciting news for air travelers we didn't mention in that open. boeing is developing a plane next week that actually has overhead space. your bags will fit. >> ahh! we will show you that and tell you all about it coming up in just a few. first today's top story. this washington whiplash. congressional republicans in turmoil this morning after the man expected to be the next house speaker, congressman kevin mccarthy dropped out of the running, shocking everyone. could one congressman speaker be angling for the job now. peter, good morning. >> we want to talk about chaos at the capitol. right now, it is still unclear which republican will emerge as a unifying figure for the party. this morning, several high-profile republican members
vice presidential candidate, paul ryan to reconsider by throwing his hat in the ring. it's the question now consuming the capitol. who will inherit john boehner's gavel as house speaker. with kevin mccarthy's stunning decision to pull out of the race, all eyes are focused on paul ryan. ryan has insisted he's not interested. but late thursday, wouldn't rule out a run. >> this is not the time or place, guys. >> reporter: still, ryan may be the only candidate who could reunite house republicans. >> maybe we could dissuade paul. >> reporter: the speaker doesn't have to be a member of congress, which explains why newt gingrich who resigned after a decade ago said he would consider a return. >> there are moments you can't avoid. >> reporter: this week, a
any candidate for leadership who has committed misdeeds should withdraw from the race. but mccarthy dismissed that as his reason for exiting. boehner said he will stay on as a replacement for the coming weeks facing a staggering to do list. just weeks left to pass a spending bill to keep the government open raised the country's debt limit or face default and pass a critical bill to repair america's roads. democrats warned the disarray comes with consequences. >> we're concerned the board of directors of the greatest country on the face of the earth is dysfunctional and unable to even select a leader. >> reporter: on the campaign trail, donald trump gave himself a pat on the back for mccarthy's move. >> they're giving me a lot of credit for that, because i said you really need somebody very, very tough and very smart. >> reporter: less than 24 hours after mccarthy's stunning announcement, house republicans will huddle behind closed doors
who is next and whatever the path forward looks like. savannah, willie, back to you. >> peter alexander, thank you. >> chuck todd is moderator of "meet the press." good morning. about this time looked like the guy who is the next speaker of the house, stunned a lot of republicans in that room. how shocked were you to hear this news? >> well, look, i wasn't shocked that mccarthy was going to struggle. i thought that his future was going to be at the benghazi committee, meaning if hillary clinton got the best of the benghazi committee, then i thought his speakership candidacy was in trouble. i guess i'm shocked he didn't try to see if he could get the votes he needed by the end of the month. so on that front, what happened yesterday clearly shocking. >> so what happens next? you have a vacant job over there in the house of representatives. the speakership, it's a powerful job. and yet you don't have people falling all over themselves to fill it. >> nobody wants it for the very reasons why john boehner is leaving the job. the place is impossible to run right now.
it's going to be impossible to run during a presidential election year. the same forces that are dividing the republican party, trump, carson, fiorina, from bush. these are the forces in the house that are basically saying we don't want the same people running the house. so i think that that's -- i think mccarthy was going to be boehner 2.0. a lot of conservatives saw that and that's why they were trying to torpedo this thing. >> the name on everyone's lips is paul ryan, the running mate to mitt romney, highly respected among conservatives on the hill, the guy who also said i don't want this job. what are the odds he ends up being the speaker? >> i think they're getting higher and higher. paul ryan is a man who can be convinced of things, saying you've got to do it for the party. and i think the best scenario that those that want ryan to do this is basically saying, hey, you only have to do the job to the end of '16.
do whatever it takes to be -- toeyfix this thing for now. i think the scenario is, ryan will do this, but only temporarily. >> you may have to answer that call. chuck todd, thank you, sir. democratic presidential candidate, senator bernie sanders will be chuck's guest this sunday on "meet the press." >> bernie sanders and hillary clinton could have some new competition in the n t few days. vice president joe biden still considering jumping into the race and could make a decision as early as this weekend. but the political hour is getting late. nbc's kristen welker is in biden's hometown, wilmington, delaware. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. confirms he will be mgiting in wilmington over the weekend to discuss a possible run, well aware the clock is ticking. and it comes as the super pac that supports biden is pulling its first tv ad at the vice president's request. >> things can change in a hernartbeat. >> reporter: it's the emotional ad the sup
pac draft biden hoped would urge the vice prllesident into entering the 2016 race. but now the super pac, unaffiliated with biden, has pulled the ad at the vice president's request. according to the "ljo.a. times," biden felt it treads on sacred ground. >> we were christmas shopping -- >> reporter: it aims at biden's resilience when a car crash killed his wife and daughter, and left his two sons seriously injured. biden, who had just been elected to the u.s. senate for the first time, decided to serve amid his tragedy. >> by focusing on my sons, i found my redemption. >> reporter: in a statement, the senior adviser to the group said nobody has more respect for the vice president and his family than we do obviously, we will honor his wishes. >> it is really my family and i have the emotional energy to run. >> reporter: it also comes as
having lost his son beau in may. he's not sure he has the strength to run. now the six-figure ad never officially aired. meanwhile, the "new yorker" is reporting that biden staffers were briefed by the democratic national committee about filing deadlines, saying he could be leaning toward a decision expected within days. savannah, willie. >> and you say with a debate coming up next week. kristen welker in delaware. breaking news this morning. a shooting at a college campus in arizona. this on the same day president obama travels to oregon to meet with some of the survivors and family members of the victims from last week's deadly shooting spree at a community college. nbc national correspondent, miguel almaguer in roseburg, oregon. good morning. morning. shooting. this one at northern arizona university, where one is dead and three are wounded. the president is getting ready to visit roseburg, but not
welcome him with open arms. >> we'll have a moment of silence. >> reporter: umpqua community college pay tribute to the victims of a deadly shooting, as roseburg residents prepare for another day in the national spotlight. president obama coming to town today to visit with victims and family. >> it's nothing more than a politicized opportunity for him to push his anti gun agenda. >> regardless of how you feel about him, political stuff, i think the fact he's coming to meet with the families is excellent. >> reporter: roseburg's mayor says the president's visit is an important step in the healing process. >> he is the number one elected official for our entire nation. and by coming here, he brings that whole feeling of the nation is behind us, and in support of us. >> reporter: the white house, not releasing names of the families at the meeting, but at
turning down the invitation. >> on principle, i find that we -- i am, you know, in -- in disagreement with his policies on gun control, and therefore we will not be attending the visit. >> reporter: a call for protest on a facebook page called "defend roseburg," telling residents it's okay to bring a firearm to show that american gun owners are responsible patriots. today the president, protests and prayers. no matter where they stand on gun control, roseburg residents seem united in one thing. they don't want this tragedy turned into a political football. >> miguel almaguer, thank you so much. north korea is preparing to put on a major show of force today to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the ruling party. bill neely is in the capitol city of pyongyang this morning, a place very few people ever get to see.
good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, willie, everyone from north korea. i'm here with sa very rare portunety, to look inside one of the most closed, most seoacretive countries in the world. and i'm in pyongyang in a metro sanction, rather beautiful. the early morning commute, triotic music playing in the background. they're celebrating a big party, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding communist party. in the capital city, everyone is eparing for the celebration. uniformed groups re practicing, children are drilling, soldiers are everywhere, no one can step out of line. it is one of the most regimented countries on earth. i'm a ed to wear an arm band to mark me out as a foreign journalist. doe wn we go into the metroo
the trains are frequent, jomaurneys cost just a few cents, and there's one thing that commuters have in common. neheyrly everyone here is wearing a party badge, most of them with a picture of the country's founder on it. there are portraits of sung everywhere, but it is kim jong-un who rules now. they say they're all behind arhim. >> yes, yes. >> reporter: yes, you speak some english. at should the world know about your leader? she tells me the future for her daughter is bright, as long as hee is their leader. they're taught to believe their leader is like a parent or a god. this metro station doubles as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war. north korea is developing a nuclear weapon. the u.s. wants to stop it. this is a country like no other. isolated, proud, still locked in
and on the streets here, tomorrow north korea will show off its military muscle with one of its biggest ever parades. tens of thousands of troops, new missiles, perhaps, and a message to the world, especially the united states. respect us, don't mess with us. it is a proud, tough nation from its capital. back to you guys. >> so unusual to get to see it ke that. bill neely, thank you. >> fascinating. more misery in south carolina today. residents getting ready for even more flooding. natalie on assignment. tamron has more on that. >> good morning, guys. good morning, everyone. south carolina's governor says coastal communities in the state are now bracing for a second round of flooding. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in columbia for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. 11 trillion gallons of with water have pounded south carolina. this morning the water is headed toward the coast.
officials are closely watching 70 others. nikki haley is now warning residents near coastal communities near georgiatown, south carolina to voluntarily evacuate. she says a new round of flooding there could linger for up to 12 days. local emergency management officials have opened up an emergency shelter but stress evacuations are voluntarily and that are right now limited to rural areas. but meanwhile, more than 350 roads and bridges remain shut down throughout the state. today here in columbia, the cleanup continues and secretary jeh johnson is scheduled to tour the area. more rain is scheduled this morning. >> difficult days ahead. thank you, gabe. as we mentioned earlier, tense moments thursday for passengers and crew aboard a delta flight from seattle to hong kong. shortly after takeoff, a red tailed hawk hit the engine of the airbus a-340, forcing the plane to return to seattle,
tacoma international airport. >> air strike. 79. >> 79, say again, did you see what happened with delta? >> yeah, number 2 engine bird strike. >> roger. >> the plane remained in the air for about an hour to burn off fuel in order to make a safer landing. eventually, the plane did land safely. thankfully, no one was injured. a tunisia democracy group has won this year's nobel peace prize. this morning, the norwegian noble peace committee announced the dialogue the die a alogue quartet won.
chef prudhomme died. he was a frequent guest on the "today" show. he was 75 years old. and now to that frightening video we showed at the top of the show. if you have ever been scared to cross a suspension bridge this is not going to help you out. a group of four tourests were crossing and it collapsed under their feet, sending them plunging more than 25 feet into that river below. this is incredible. no one was seriously injured. an investigation is under way to find out exactly what went wrong there. there's nothing that could prepare you for something -- >> oh, my gosh. >> what went wrong? the bridge broke. >> you've seen movies and it's always this slow process. that was just in an instant. >> frightening. >> this doesn't happen if you just binge watch tv on your couch. >> pro tip right there. thank you.
how about a look at the weather, dylan. >> more rain moving into parts of south carolina, especially as we go into saturday. in the meantime, it's this cold front that's bringing most of its rain just south of st. louis right now. this is a cold front that's actually going to slowly spread eastward through the day today. and then as it slowly moves through south carolina, we'll see heavier pockets of rain develop across the western part of the state early saturday morning but as we go into saturday afternoon, this area of low pressure develops and this is going to be the reason why we could see some areas of heavier downpours. also, more of an easterly component to the wind. that's going to increase the regular high tide. so we could see more coastal flooding. we're not looking at a whole lot of rain, just about a quarter of an inch up to a half inch with isolated higher amounts around myrtle beach. that's no good news for the fact that rivers and creeks are all still very, very high. as for the drought, since september 29th, we have wiped out the drought completely in south carolina. but again, we could see more dangerous flooding possible as
