"today in new york's" katherine creag is there. kat? >> reporter: residents describe it as an inferno. at this moment firefighters are trying to get it under control 100%. smoke can be smelled all the way in queens. we want to show you now video. within minutes of this fire breaking out here residents in the area tell us the fire broke out around 3:00 a.m. on the fourth floor and the flames engulfed the upper floors. at least three floors were burning. this is a low rise building, we
are told under construction. online be we found this project. it will be known as the dorian/chelsea residents. we investigated and discovered the contractors filed applications for installing a sprinkler and stand pipe in mid august. that apartment case is under review. amounts are on the market for sale. now there's a massive fire and people describe what think saw. take a listen. >> just saw a black cloud and then five minutes later i saw all these flames cooling up from the bottom to the top and it was coming pretty heavy. >> everything was pitch black, the whole vicinity. >> reporter: as we take a live look, 221 west seventh street. all of the ladder trucks spraying water on the building. it is believed tho one has hurt.
seventh avenue, only one lane is open right now. a lot of street closures on the side streets. a huge fire in chelsea. >> katherine creag in chelsea. thank you. following breaking news on long island in suffolk county. a very serious crash happening where the northern state parkway runs over wolf hill road. tracie strahan is here with that. >> reporter: darlene, we're working to confirm that this was all the work of a wrong way driver who struck a suffolk county police officer and another car. this was absolutely charred from a fiery crash. so far they're not giving up any info on the details of exactly how this happened. we're hearing that once that vehicle struck a suffolk county police car, that officer went in pursuit of it from the motor parkway onto the northern state and onto the ramp near wolf hill
that vehicle reportedly crashed into another uninvolved vehicle and then into a tree area, tree lined area right a lodge the side of the road. now, again, we don't know how many people were injured in this or -- there's a bit of activity on the northern state parkway. >> tracie, thank you very much. 5:04. staten island, a 19-year-old is under arrest for last week's stabbing on the s-74 bus. he sent an unidentified bus rider to the hospital in critical condition. according to investigators, they had gotten into an argument over a seat. he faces attempted murder and weapons charges. a new jersey state senate committee wants to hear what you bus riders think about plans to possibly replace the port authority bus terminal. committee is going to hold two
the ten year capital plan. one plan under consideration involves building a new bus terminal. it would be just a block away from where the port authority currently is. the port authority chose not to hold a vote on that proposal at the last meeting. they're going to meet on thursday. trying to come up with something. 5:04. time for weather and traffic heading over to chris cimino. >> big, big changes underway. temperatures a lot milder this morning than they were 24 hours ago. not as cold to start. a much milder afternoon with some sunshine returning as well. that southwest wind really gets gusty at times. it will keep pumping the warm air in our direction. our first forecast in the city at 49 degrees. not all that cold compared to yesterday's mid 30s. 51 at 8:00, 65 by noon and 66 degrees. high of 69 degrees.

failure. an nypd officer is on the wrong side of the law for trying to steal a brooklyn house. first uncovered by our iteam. 45-year-old blanch o'neill was arrested of grand larceny. they say that o'neill claimed someone was illegally trying to transfer her home on vernon avenue in bedford styverson. investigators say it was o'neill who was the thief. >> she, in fact, committed the forgery and forged the documents and submitted the documents and transferred the property into her name. >> prosecutors seau kneel also faces one count of perjury for lying about owning that home. she has pleaded not guilty to all those charges. a tentative deal has been reached that averts a school bus driver strike on long island. a new contract still needs to be ratified by union members. that vote is expected later this week. bowman operates buses in dozens

"today in new york" starts now. good morning, everyone. it is tuesday morning, october 20th. i'm darlene rodriguez. >> michael gargiulo. chris cimino here with the forecast. different morning. we welcome it, chris. >> in a big way. starting out in the city at 50 degrees in city island. 47 murray hill. out across long island generally close to 50 from islip to farming dale. yesterday morning in the low 20s, in some cases even teens. seeing 40s this morning. monticello, 36. that's normal for this time of year. we expect above-normal temperatures. mostly sunny for the afternoon. breezy, 69 at noon. forecasts 69 degrees. 5:30, let's find out if the commute is treating us okay. lauren? >> we have a couple of problems starting with the northern state parkway. shuts down the road.
it's out between wolf hill road and deer park avenue. traffic is being diverted off the road eastbound lanes are getting off at wolf hill road westbound off at deer park avenue. best bet to head to the long island expressway instead. that is free and clear in this area. just a little congested on the ramp there. then heading over to the spring brook parkway, we have two accidents southbound between jackson avenue and tuckaho roads. 5:31 right now. breaking news that we're following in manhattan, a four alarm fire. take a look at these flames. they erupted hours ago. firefighters still trying to get that under control. this is all happening in chelsea on 17th street between 7th and 8th avenues. we just got word now that there are concerns that the building could collapse. today in new york's katherine creag is there. kat, what is the latest? >> indeed, darlene. we just talked with the fire chief minutes ago. he said the building where the fire started, it is in danger of collapsing. it doesn't look like there's
that much smoke coming out of it. the firefighters have it under control. it is in danger of collapsing that's why a residential building and apartment building across the street is being evacuated at this very moment. we want to show you video for people in the area of what this fire looked like in the moment after the fire broke out. residents tell us that the fire started at 3:00 a.m. on the fourth floor and the flames engulfed the upper floors. at least three floors were burning. this is a low rise building. it's a building that will be known as the dorian chelsea residences. multi-million dollar apartments. the contractors filed applications for installing a sprinkler system in mid august. the application is under review. this is a huge fire. people described what they saw. take a listen. >> i was coming around the corner because i smelled the smoke. when i came around the corner big flames were coming from on top of the building everywhere.
that stuff but i was a little nervous. kind of crazy. >> reporter: and it is believed no one was hurt. darlene, around here so many school closures, seventh avenue still closed off, only one lane. the side streets are closed as well. back to you, darlene. >> kat, before you go, we've been investigating this building. we found there are some active violations right now. what can you tell us about that? >> right. from what we heard from the department of buildings, there are violations when it comes to the elevator system. residents have been telling us that for months they've seen construction work here, they've seen workers around this area, that the scaffolding in the area, active violations on the buildings for the elevator system. there are apartments on the market right now for sale, at least two of them in this building. at this point obviously the construction project unknown exactly where it will go from now because of this massive fire. back to you, darlene. >> katherine creag, thank you. breaking news on long island
in suffolk county. just received new information on the crash on the northern state parkway. "today in new york's" tracie strahan is there. tracie? >> reporter: michael, i've been on the phone with suffolk county police all morning long. they now confirmed to me two people were killed, the result of a head-on crash and a wrong way driver. all of this happening on the northern state parkway about three hours ago. we have video of one of the cars in question involved in all of this. it's absolutely charred. it's said to be a fiery wreck around 2:38 this morning. now they say that vehicle struck a suffolk county police car and during the chase then hit another vehicle going towards the northern state parkway on the ramp towards wolf hill road. it's unconfirmed if the driver in that vehicle is the other confirmed fatality. again, two people confirmed dead, the result of a wrong way driver on the northern state parkway. you see the lights flashing, michael, behind me.

out by 15a in the sloatsburg area. we have road work causing delays there. there's an accident in the northbound lane. more of a delay because of the construction and accident. i'll continue to keep you posted on that. heading over to the buses, a couple of detours, b 15, m 9, m 11, 101, 102, 103. major commuter lines and subways moving on or close to schedule. alternate side parking rules in effect today. lauren, thanks. 5:36. happening now, police looking for an armed robber who's already struck twice in manhattan. surveillance video shows him after he pistol whipped a woman and stole her purse inside a west village apartment building saturday morning. it happened justen minutes after he allegedly robbed a man at gun point in greenwich village. police believe he got away in a light gray suv. this morning an australian rugby player threatened two women on the upper west side is out on bail.
he posted this video online before his arrest friday morning. police say he followed two women into a building on 76th street on west end avenue. he apparently threatened them and then got into a fight with another man. he is fired from his team. reputed gangster is on trial. testimony continues today in the trial of 80-year-old vincent assaro. prosecutors say he planned the 1978 lufthansa robbery. they used inside information from crooked airport workers. >> the robbery itself was a rather astounding accomplishment. i hate to give credit to the criminals but it was so well planned, so well carried out. >> assaro's defense team says
they rely on untrustworthy mobsters for the prosecution. gun control laws are unconstitutional. they were passed in the wake of connecticut's new town shooting. the court, however, struck down two minor restrictions in new york and connecticut's laws. >> the medical examiner says the death of a long island death of a doctor in a vestibule was an accident. 38-year-old kirsten siveny died of acute alcohol intoxication. the dermatologist was found in the doorway of a building. the wife and mother of three had been using cocaine there in an apartment with a boyfriend and another man. the fbi is looking into reports that america's top spy is the latest target of a hacker. a high school student claims he broke into cia director john brennan's e-mails. he says he also hacked into homeland security jay johnson's account. these were personal accounts.

behind it eventually it does turn chillier. patchy clouds early, milder afternoon. high in the upper 60s. tonight 54 in mid town, 40 in the burbs. tomorrow warmer yet. looking at a high of 72 degrees. seven day forecast continues that. cool down by friday. back to 59. 60 on saturday. sun and clouds, maybe a shower on sunday at 65. let's get back over to lauren scala. how's the commute rolling on? >> it's rolling on nicely for the most part. we have this accident investigation still out there on the northern state parkway. tracie strahan is also keeping us updated on this. the northern state remains closed in both directions between wolf hill road and deer park avenue. you can see traffic being diverted off the road. eastbound off at wolf hill, westbound at deer park avenue. of course deer park avenue northbound at the northern state is also shut down. you cannot get onto the roadway. your best bet would be to head to the l.i.e. and avoid this altogether. heading over to paramus, we still have construction on route
17 in both directions between century road and midland avenue. that shuts down two lanes and will be out there for 15 more minutes. then heading up to the new york state through way northbound an accident by exit 15a. that's not causing the delay. it's the construction that blocks the right lane. you can see a bit of a slow ride through here. the gowanus expressway, no zejts accidents to report on. we'll have more weather and traffic coming up on the 4s. 5:47 now. this morning double amputee olympic runner oscar pistorius is out of the south africa prison. he was secretly cree leased late last night, that's a full day early. pistorius will be under house arrest with his uncle in pretoria. tomorrow marks one year since he was sentenced to five years in prison in the shooting death of
pistorius is found guilty of culpable homicide. they want to seek a murder conviction. an upstate teen is out of the hospital and set to testify about a deadly church beating. new hartford police say deborah and bruce leonard beat their 19-year-old son lucas to death because he talked about quitting the word of life church. a half sister and three other church members also face charges. 17-year-old christopher leonard survived the assault and is expected to testify in a preliminary hearing tomorrow. a street in queens is named for an nypd officer killed in the line of duty 40 years ago. it's now co-named patrolman phillip cardillo way. he died in 1972 after being ambushed at a harlem mosque and shot with his own gun. his death is the only unsolved police killing in modern nypd history. on long island a victim of a
car thief is facing charges this morning. police say the bay shore woman left her infant niece in a running car while she went into a subway sandwich shop yesterday. the thief jumped in with 4-month-old inside. they found the car with the engine running and the baby safe and sound. >> the best. he was patient. found her. >> well, gail solomon is now charged with child endanger meant. congress is going to hold hearings on those daily fantasy sports websites such as draft kings and fan dual. they found there was no wrongdoing by an employee who won $350,000 on rival fan dual. the former u.s. attorney is the lead investigator. it was impossible for the

in manhattan that we're following. a huge fire has gutted a building on west 17th street. the fire was just upgraded to a fifth alarm. "today in new york's" katherine creag is on the scene. kat. >> reporter: darlene, we've been telling you, the building where the fire started, it is in danger of collapse. that is why all of the surrounding buildings are being evacuated at the moment, a safety problem. a nearby restaurant opened doors to let residents sit and stay warm. we wanted to show you video of what this fire looked like when it started. 3:00 a.m. an evacuee said she could see the flames from her window. it traveled from the fourth floor to the upper floors. at least three floors went up in flames. this building, it is under construction. it's vacant. online we found the project known as the dorion chelsea residences. multi-million dollar residences.

station with the very latest on this. tracie? >> reporter: michael, police confirmed to us over the phone that this was a head-on collision and witnesses say it was a fiery one. so much so that activity on the northern state parkway in both directions shut down indefinitely as the investigation into how this all started continues. let's show you video now of one of the cars involved in this wrong way crash around 2:38 this morning. it was absolutely charred from what you can see there. now we're working to confirm reports that that vehicle actually struck a suffolk county police car and then during a chase headed the wrong way from the motor parkway onto the northern state and near the ramp of wolf hill road. we're trying to, again, confirm reports not only that that driver was killed but a driver and another vehicle that wasn't involved in any of this was killed as well. that is what we are hearing so far. awaiting michael for an update from suffolk county police. you can see the lights over my shoulder. this entrance to the northern state parkway absolutely shut down.

"today in new york's" katherine creag has been there all morning. she's been speaking with fire investigators. kat, what are they telling you? >> reporter: michael, residents tell us, this building where the fire started is in danger of collapsing. down west 17th street. we want to show you all of these emergency vehicles, the fire trucks on 7th avenue. go over to this restaurant, cafeteria on the corner. it has taken in several families, individuals, evacuees because they were forced out of their homes. they're in there trying to stay warm. an evacuee told us she could see the flames from her window. the fire broke out around 3:00 a.m. on the fourth floor and the flames traveled quickly up to the upper floors. at least three floors went up in flames. the building is vacant. it's multi-million dollar apartments. the contractors filed applications to install a sprinkler in mid august.
the application is still under review. we've been talking with evacuees who described the fire and how they had to leave their apartments. >> i could see the flames like really high. i was on the same level because i'm on the fifth floor. so i thought, i have to evacuate. inhailing that smoke. so i came down -- >> you just have your documents on you? important papers? >> that's it. all my stuff in the building. >> reporter: and we talked with another woman in her group, two other adults, two children, two dogs, a pet bird, they're also in a restaurant here trying to stay warm. they're not really sure where exactly they're going to go because it's not sure yet when they can go back into their home. the building is under construction. it does have violations for the elevator system. michael, the big thing is it was applying for a sprinkler system but that application still under review and something we'll look at throughout the morning. back to you, michael.

by friday back to reality. the next two to three days in great shape. temperatures heading up. 62 is the normal high. 69 degrees today. we're not stopping there. heading into the 70ed probably tomorrow and thursday. it's a chilly morning in parts of central new jersey. just not as cold as yesterday morning. 40 in jackson. sayreville 44. hillsboro, 44. up against the coast point pleasant at 45. in the city, 49 degrees. 50ish across most of long island into the hudson valley. low 40s. certainly no 20s showing up. patchy clouds. this is what we have to get through. a front to the north of us. not making progress in our direction. stalled out to the north of us. going to stay there for the next couple of days at least. while we have the patchy clouds, notice they're starting to break up towards the north. we will start to see some sunshine today mixing with a few clouds. you can see it on future tracker and moving forward. most of the area looking pretty clear. areas of high cloud cover, that's about it. tonight we'll find the cloud cover stays to the north.

update on the five alarm fire in chelsea. live pictures from chopper 4. happening on west 17th street. >> "today in new york's" katherine creag is there. she just got an update. >> reporter: darlene and michael, the fdny evacuated apartments here because it is worried that this building will come down. take a listen. >> at this time the building is in major danger of collapse so we are keeping everybody away from the building. we have a few other buildings that are evacuated because of the potential collapse and this is going to be an extended operation. >> reporter: the vacant building had no sprinkler system. we learned the contractors applied for one but it's still under construction. the fire broke out around 3:00 a.m. on the fourth floor and traveled up to the next two floors.
but a lot of people worried here, darlene and michael, that this building will collapse. back to you, darlene and michael. >> kat, thank you. now our other breaking story of the morning. wrong-way crash in suffolk county left two people dead. tracie strahan is live. >> investigators are actually on the northern state parkway. it's shut off in both directions after that fiery head-on crash early this morning. it happened around 2:38 this morning and we're working to confirm reports that it may have been the result of a police chase. we can see what was left. the smokey remnant of one of the vehicles involved. we're hearing that it hit a suffolk county police vehicle then after fleeing struck another vehicle that was not involved. now the identity of the two people that died as a result of the crash have not yet been released but, again, the northern state parkway blocked off in both directions. you can see the detours right behind us. back to you. tracie, thanks very much. lauren, you're following a
situation in new jersey. >> a new accident on route 80 eastbound by exit 35 mount hope road. you can see the delays are really bad out there. that takes out the left lane. heading over to the fdr drive, reports of a disabled vehicle heading northbound by the manhattan bridge in the right lane is causing things to slow down. in addition to the northern state parkway, we have an accident on the southern state. westbound before peninsula boulevard. delays back to the meadow brook. >> chris, one more check of the weather. >> you want good news? >> yes. >> i have good news. there's your seven day forecast. temperatures bouncing back into the upper 60s. clouds are showing signs of thinning out. 69 the forecast high. only 50s the low. 72 tomorrow, even better. 73 on thursday. thursday there will be more cloud cover in the afternoon and evening. there could be a light sprinkle or shower here or there, that's about it. once that front comes through though it's kind of back to reality. upper 50s on friday with sunshine. saturday near 60s. still looking pretty good. mid 60s sunday, maybe stray
