live from studio 3c in frofr center rockefeller center, this has news 4 new york. a tragic and fatal fall, a four-year-old boy plunges five stories to his death. tonight the search for answers. plus, a hate crime investigation at a new york college. three suny students say a racist mob attacked them on a bus. we'll have more on those stories in a moment, but we begin with two breaking stories, both in new jersey. these are happening right now in essex county, one on south orange avenue in east orange, the other on clinton place in newark. >> there is a big crime scene. we're still working to gather information here. but preliminary reports say there's a shooting and police may be involved. no word yet, though, on injuries. a large police presence

no word there on any injuries yet either. we are working to get confirmed details on both of these stories . now we go to an horrific story in new jersey. a boy just four years old falls out of an apartment window. >> the child died. this happened on newark avenue in jersey city. michael george is there with new information. >> reporter: the four-year-old boy fell from a fifth floor window in this apartment building. they rushed him to the hospital but he couldn't be saved. now some people who live here are asking could this have been pre prevented. fire department radio calls reported the horrific accident. a four-year-old in this jersey city apartment dropped out of this window and fell five stories to the apartment be parking lot below.

apartment building, trying to determine exactly how the boy fell. witnesses who saw the tragedy unfold want answers too. >> very difficult. >> i'm very sorry for that child and that family too. >> reporter: denise used to live in this apartment and she told us it would be easy for a child to open a window. >> put some type of locks or bars on it, especially with people that have small kids. >> reporter: apartments are not required to have window guards. but tenants have a right to demand them if they have a child younger than ten and make a request to the landlord in writing. some say it could have saved the life of this young boy. >> i think they need to do something about it because it's only going to happen again. >> reporter: the prosecutors office is still investigating this incident. they say it appears to just be a tragic accident. new tonight, a crime alert for people living in the hunts point section of the bronx.

the door oc an apartment on beck street claiming to be exterminators. when the woman opened the door the gunmen barged inside and tied her up and demanded money. there wasn't any in this apartment so they only got away with an eye iphone. police say 34 cole boykin junior met up with a 15-year-old girl in eddy ison edison. he's charged with sexual assault. in new jersey a woman faces murder charges in the beating death of her mother-in-law. she was arrested late last night at a casino in atlantic city. police say she struck her mother-in-law in the head several times with a heavy object. the body of the 73-year-old woman was found in this home in

they both lived in that house. it is not clear what prompted the attack. two inmates who escaped from a california jail are back in custody tonight. a tip led police to them this morning in san francisco. a woman called police when she saw a van that matched the description of one stolen by the fuj ty gitive fugitives fugitives. they broke out of jail with a third inmate who vend surrendered to police yesterday. >> the entire state can breathe a sigh of relief because we have the other two dangerous individuals back in custody where they should be. >> investigates say the trio escaped by cutting a hole in a metal grate, calling through tunnels and then rappelling four stories using bed linens. a fight broke out at a motorcycle expo leaving one dead

shots were fired and there was at least one stabbing this afternoon at the national western complex. police say it's not clear what sparked the violence or if it was gang related. no arrests have been made. with just two days until the iowa caucuses, presidential candidates are out in full force this weekend, hoping that one last push will get voters out to vote on monday night. >> reporter: with two days to go, donald trump came back. >> if we can win here, if we win in iowa, everyone is talking about it, we can run the table for the first time ever. >> reporter: he means win every republican contest and it's possible. trump's weakest polls are here, a five-point iowa lead. >> you've got to get out and caucus. >> reporter: even in a blizzard or a marital storm. >> if your wife leaves you for another man, if you leave your wife because you don't like her,

and clinton. steve handlesman. and a programming note, chuck todd will have all of this tomorrow on meet the press. his guests include ted cruz, marco rubio and bernie sanders. and melissa russo is on her way to iowa. watch for her reports starting tomorrow night at 6:00. tonight threw e suny albany students are recovering from a possible hate crime on a bus. they say about a dozen write hite men and women attacked them. police are trying to figure out if this attack was racially motivated. >> there have been allegations of racial slurs during this altercation. that's certainly something that cannot be tolerated and the police department is conducting an investigation right now as we speak. >> the three women had minor injuries and one was taken to the hospital.

island elementary school where a dozen students got sick with the norovirus. they say the school sent letters home about the stomach flu on friday afternoon. by that time many parents had already heard the news unofficially through facebook. >> it would have been nice to get a heads-up. a lot of people who aren't on the facebook group would have no idea. i wouldn't have known anything. >> now, many parents decided to keep their kids home as a precaution on friday. with attendance rate at only 48%. they say they will continue to work closely with health officials to ensure all students are safe. a new york giants player is caught up in a police investigation after a woman he met at a hotel makes an accusation. plus, like father like son, the crime that landed a family behind bars and how the law caught up with them.

top of our newscast here, the possible home invasion in newark. we have now learned that two people are dead, a man and a woman. this happened on clinton place that you see in the video there. police and the essex county prosecutor's office are both investigating. tune in for today in new york at 6:00 a.m. for any new information on this story. new tonight, take a good look at this gray bmw. police say the driver is responsible for a hit-and-run in brooklyn that left a 27-year-old woman fighting for her life. this happened early this morning on metropolitan avenue and rodney streetd in in williamsburg. the victim was trying to hail a cab when she was hit by that speeding car. if you have information on the driver, police would like to hear from you. police have not filed charges against a new york giants player being investigated

the woman says she met up with defensive tackle jay bromley in a hotel room after they connected on instagram. she claims he took things too far and tried to rape her. police tell us after questioning both, there is serious questions about the woman's account. suffolk county police are stepping up a campaign to shut down drug houses in residential neighborhoods. just last night they took in a father and son. police arrested these two in their home. investigates say they seized nearly $60,000 worth of heroin, cocaine and oxycodone and 200 grand cash. the police commissioner said special operations teams are cracking down and issuing warrants at homes that are flagged by neighbors. >> many of our search warntd rants

they see cars coming to the houses late at night. >> so far police have executed nine search warrants and seized more than 2,000 grams of drugs. tonight two new jersey children who died in the blizzard have been laid to rest. services were hold for the four-year-old and the one-year-old in passaic this morning. the children and their mother died of carbon monoxide poisoning last weekend. their father was digging their car out of the snow while his wife and children sat in the car with the engine running and the exhaust pipe blocked by snow. >> it breaks your heart entirely. and then you realize that you're not so far removed from the circumstances of life that it's just one extension away and it's a close friend. well, the children's mother was laid to rest on thursday. coming up next here on news

we called it the january thaw in our break here. >> it's a good thing. we're trying to melt all this snow and ice. and we need these temperatures well above freezing to do that. we've got that going so far. 38 degrees and we have mostly clear skies. not as cold as recent nights. that's going to be the trend over the next 24 hours or so. temperatures chilly but not like the past few. a hint of spring for your sunday. it's going to be a great day to head outside.

coming our way over the next few days. not right now, though. it's dry and quiet in new jersey. 36 in delaware, watergap. a little bit of chilly conditions in monticello. it's 28. still in the 40s across long island. 40 in islip and 40 in farmingdale. we're tracking some clouds filtering through but nothing major there. we have mostly clear skies in central park. this is our next weather maker but this is not until monday. our next area of low pressure and associated frontal system has to trek all the way across the great lakes to get to us and it does so monday afternoon. sunny through the morning into the afternoon. it's mild tomorrow. temperatures well into the 40s. the thaw continues. the melting continues. this is monday 8:00 a.m., dry for your morning commute. here comes the rain late morning

the cold front moves through. no heavy rain here. this isn't the major storm. that happens on wednesday. monday is just a little preview of what's to come on wednesday. temperatures definitely not as cold as it has been. we're going to stay above freezing in the city tonight. the melting can go on all night in central park. down to 30 in eastchester. 30 your low temperature in fairfield. tomorrow take a look at these temperatures. we could see 50. about ten to 15 degrees above average tomorrow afternoon. 47 in central park, 57 in rye brook. 47 in ronkonkoma. seven day forecast shows tomorrow is mild but it gets milder than that. by monday we're into the 50s. couple of showers as i mentioned there. tuesday we dry out for a day. wednesday is your umbrella day, heavy rain a possibility, gusty and thunderstorms.

finally what a day at the farmer's insurance open. jason gore on the par five 18th hole from 250 yards out he nails it. that's a double eagle. freddie jay cobson also eagled. a dramatic day in the world of sports. thanks. i want to show you this amazing video from maui. you can see a surfer catching a huge wave and then he wipes out. the surfer described the wave as a sea monster rising out of the ocean. terrifying. he came out of it with only a stiff neck and a broken board. he was surfing again, guys, the very next day. >> that's got to be a 30 foot wave.
