>> and packing heat in the upper west side. >> and close call, video just in of a truck fearly crushed by a tree. >> good evening i'm chuck scarborough. >> a lot more on those stories in just a moment. temperatures are plunging, ice co ould be coating the roads soon. >> it's not because we're expecting any ice or snow to fall from the ice. we're done with that, but all that slush and rain that didn't dry up from earlier today is expected to freeze over tonight on untreated surfaces because temperatures will drop below 32 degrees for several hours overnight. thus, the freeze warning that's in effect. it's mainly for coastal locations, includes the five buroughs where the temperatures will be cold. in the 20s in most cases until 10:00 in the morning. here's a look right now with the readings. it's 33 in central park, but you're already in the 20s. 32 in valley stream.
way to the shore so the shore areas aren't safe either from this freeze. winds are starting to pick up a little bit between 15 and 25 miles per hour. we may see some gusts to near 30 miles per hour overnight and into early tomorrow morning. we'll bring the windchills down to the teens in those cases and maybe in a few other cases in the single digits and it's going to stay that way all day. even though we make it up to 40, 42 in the afternoon it's going to feel like the 20s and 30s with the breeze. how's it going to make it feel at yankee stadium for the home opener tomorrow? i'll have that in the forecast and the one day when we come back. a suspect is now in custody in a deadly car jacking. >> we're live in sunset park where police say that man ran down a business owner with his own truck. ida? >> reporter: police sources tell me that the man is in the station house tonight as we speak. we don't know who it is.

girl who vanished from her hometown in virginia may have turned up in the bronx and she could be in danger. one day after she disappeared, the aware foundation said she called from a pay phone on friday on west burn side avenue in university heights. the group says she may be a victim of sex trafficking. if you've seen her police would like to hear from you. a loaded gun had police descending on a school on the upper east side today. the scares involving students and weapons. it happened at p s169. we're live outside where three teens are being questioned. >> reporter: chuck, a loaded handgun and a box of ammunition landed three teenagers inside a cop car and then at the 19th precinct station house. it's here. they're facing questions and criminal possession charges after police say those teens brought a gun to school and one of them threatened a 12-year-old girl with that revolver. outside an upper east side school, a visible police
inside, officers discovered a fully loaded handgun and extra bullets. >> i need to worry about it. i wasn't expecting it. >> what's your reaction to hearing that? >> it's not good. it's bad. >> officers got the call just before 2:00 this afternoon. now three teenagers ages 13, 14 and 15 are facing charges. investigators say the 13-year-old fletenned threatened another student with a 22 involver. the 14-year-old was carrying extra bullets. >> it's awful, but i've heard of it before. >> reporter: school agents have heard it before too. the union representing them says it's becoming all too common. it's the fourth handgun discovered inside new york city schools in the last three weeks. >> these are schools that these guns are being found in so that dme gaits
need to get rid of metal detectors. we need more of them. >> reporter: no one was hurt in the incident. >> the kids, the people are crazy, the parents, you see, the parents are crazy too. because how he get that gun? >> reporter: how did they get that gun? that's a question police here are looking to answer tonight. the department of education says crime has actually dipped in new york city public schools in the last few years. they tell us extra support will be provided to that school. we're live on the upper east side tonight. news 4 new york. >> thank you. new tonight police are looking for two men involved in a bronx robbery. some surveillance video shows a man walking into a barbershop around 8:30. one of them flashed a gun before ripping a chain and a bracelet while a customer was sitting in the chair. the men ran off, nobody was injured but anyone with information should contact police. heading now to newark where
in an alleged plot to kill the city's mayor. he's been wanted since last week. it was on wednesday when somebody called the mayor's office saying they overheard two men at newark penn station discussing a plan to kill him. police caught up with both men but they took off in both directions. one man was arrested at the scene. >> training rolling once again along amtrak's northeast corridor after a deadly crash over the weekend but there are a lot of questions that still remain. some video pulled from the train shows maintenance equipment sitting on two sets of tracks. this is just before the crash. it's not clear why that equipment was there or whether it had been cleared. palmetto train 89 was headed from new york to georgia on the morning. it had just passed philly when the train suddenly crashed into the amtrak backhoe sitting right on the track. an amtrak worker and his supervisor on that backhoe were killed instantly. smoo the smoo >> the video shows construction
train equipment on he track immediately adjacent to the amtrak's train's track. >> just last may eight passengers were killed in an amtrak accident north of philly. since then they've added an automatic braking system which should have been programmed to prevent trains from approaching a work zone. there are some questions tonight about whether the system failed or perhaps whether it was human error. politics now. it is all about the numbers. candidates on both sides of the aisle fighting for votes and delegates. some are hoping for a big win in the badger state. polls show cruz is leading trump on the eve of the vote. trump insists he will clinch the nomination. >> if we don't win here, it's not over, but wouldn't you like to take the credit in wisconsin for ending it?

a sight'ing helicopter crashed in tennessee today. it went down in the smoky mountain. authorities say flames consumed most of that helicopter and it appeared to have tumbled down the hillside after crashing into iten. crews worked into the night putting out the brush fire sparked by the flaming wreck. the cause is under investigation. >> an alleged drunk driver accused of killing a couple on
he crashed his sedan into a pickup truck last night with william and joe ann keer inside. they were on their way home after having dinner with family when the accident happened. neighbors say the two retirees lived for their kids, for their grandchildren and for their community. >> if you needed them at 2:00 in the morning, they'd be there. they were so down to earth, so family oriented. they were the kind of neighbors you hope for. >> right now he's facing charges of driving while intoxicated but police say those charges could be upgraded. >> police discovered dozens of helpless puppies in a locked van in new jersey earlier this morning. that van was parked outside just pups. the pet store, the police heard their cries and found 67 puppies crammed inside packed cages. the puppies are now being treated at a local animal hospital and the owner of the store is already facing allegations of animal cruelty at

the driver, the white truck on the left can't stop in time but the sergeant rolls into the debris. the sunday morning crash happened at a time as the entire region felt those winds and as many neighbors cleaned up the mess they left behind. trees down, power out. and back at the scene, witnesses got out of their vehicles and appreciated the power of seconds. watch again. just a moment or two kept that tall tree from slamming just on top of anyone. this story easily could have had a very different ending. >> reporter: both the sergeant and the man in that truck are okay. no word on how that call to the insurance company went though. >> a lot of people making those calls after that storm. >> they are and can you imagine that guy thinking about that? time and time again, that close to being really crushed by that tree. >> talk about incredible timing and it was really frightening being out and about.
strong gusty winds across the area. they've relaxed although they've seen a few gusts in the area, there won't be enough like that but enough to bring us into our winter weather gear. if you started putting away all your winter wear you'll have to bring out a few things for tomorrow morning and during the day tomorrow. it is going to be a cold one. 32 right now feels like 24 already. we're getting some serious windchills and tomorrow morning some of those windchills will be in the single digits to the north of the city. a hard freeze tonight. i know some of you have got plants and flowers coming up already, wondering what's going to happen. sometimes in these hard freezes especially when the temperatures are below freezing for several hours, that will kill off the plants but there's not much you can do if you can't bring them in inside. tomorrow the yankees' home opener, got moved from today because of the weather. but it will be colder tomorrow. te ymperatures in the 30s and 40s and windchills below that. some thunderstorms coming up thursday.

well, it was a pitiful sight, a dog stuck under a bridge. so they went to rescue him. after the firefighter made several failed attempts to save him the dog saved himself. he jumped into the water and he just kept going. >> all right. we have a theme here tonight. beau the bull made quite the splash in tennessee. firefighters had to wrangle him out of a pool yesterday. he walked through an open gate, waddndered right into the deep end of the water. firefighters had to place a chain around his neck to guide him out so he's now back in his pasture. his owner says he is a gentle giant with a curiosity about life and they are thankful for the firefighters who saved him. >> i suspect the pool water looked fine before the bull got in there. >> we'll be right back with
