the tri-state set to get a messy mix of rain, sleet and snow. but first -- ufr gent. mayday. >> firefighters in a life or death scramble to save their own when a building in flames collapses. good evening. i'm chuck scarborough. >> and i'm sibila vargas. that fire was fanned by winds off the ocean. part of the building came crashing down. >> firefighters were inside. michael george is live in key port, new jersey, with the frantic moments and what may have ignited that inferno. >> reporter: chuck, three buildings filled with businesses and apartments now turned to nothing but a pile of rubble. they've had to demolish what's left to keep the fire from sparking up again. tonight we can show you new video demonstrating the moment when one of the buildings collapse and we spoke to a man who says he may know what started this fire. >> we've got guys down. urgent. mayday. >> reporter: a worst-case
this building when suddenly it collapses. >> mayday, mayday! >> pretty intense. flames were pretty high. >> all units clear the area. >> reporter: here's the collapse from a different angle, six firefighters were injured battling the fire but thankfully all expected to survive. >> it was a miracle, dutd. >> reporter: the fire quickly overtook three buildings our offices are totalled.
haven't determined the exact cause. people who live here are grateful the fire was contained before it destroyed all of downtown. >> a couple of firemen were injured. i hope they're okay. they did an unbelievable job to keep it from spreading to the downtown. >> reporter: still a very large scene here as fire investigate ors continue to look into the cause. two firefighters were actually in the building when it collapsed but again, amazingly, they escaped with nonlife threatening injuries, all six firefighters, again, are expected to survive. and the cause can't be determined until some of this debris is cleared. then fire investigators hope to get in there and that will hopefully be tomorrow morning. live in keyport, new jersey, michael george, "news 4 new york." now to the weather. we are more than two weeks into spring and here comes another dose of winter. news4's janice huff is tracking a mix of rain and snow that will soon coat the area in just hours. >> that's right. most of the tri-state area will see light amounts of snow. it will mainly be rain and snow coming in tomorrow morning and
the city and most areas will see less than an inch of accumulation of snow. but there's a little bit of a bull's eye right here over portions of mercer county, back to just north of philadelphia to 1 to 3 inches possible there. it's mainly going to be be on grasscy surfaces. the roads should stay wet as it should melt on impact with the asphalt surfaces. hunter don county, there's an advisory for you on saturday. you're expecting higher amounts. i would watch out in ocean county, a slight possibility there. the leading edge of this rain/snow mix is now moving through west virginia into western pennsylvania and should reach the city around 10:00 in the morning. so between 9:00 and noon is when it spreads oev s s over. it should melt and move out by 6:00 but refreeze is likely tomorrow night with even colder temperatures. i'll show you thau those in a few minutes. >> janice, thank you. use our weather app.

"news 4 new york." new tonight, we are getting a look at the man who police say used fire escapes to break into apartments in the bronx. police say this man darnell simmons broke into two apartments through the fire escape windows. the daytime break-ins happened on december 1st and 2nd. several pairs of sneakers, a
searching for the suspect in the city's latest slashing looking through mta surveillance video. police say an israeli tourist fell asleep on the sixth street platform after losing his way. he woke up around 3:30 friday morning. law enforcement sources say the 55-year-old tourist noticed someone hovering over him. they say the suspect demanded cash. a struggle enfolded. the suspect slashed the tourist on the neck, face and hands. >> arrived to bleaker street and it was chaotic. >> i find it very scary, you knower, because people come out here to shop and enjoy their themselves and the fact you've got to look over your shoulder every five seconds, you know.
sources also tell news4 the victim had met with a jeweler in the diamond district but they don't believe the attack is related. >> this subway stop is like you don't really see too much happening out here. but it can happen anywhere. >> reporter: the slashing adding to a growing trend. through april 3rd show there have been 1,057 slashings and stabbings compared to 852 last year during the same time period. that's almost a 25% increase. and the latest slashing a reason for kai eesh sha malcolm to worry about getting on the train. >> it makes me scared, a little nervous, to like use the subway because you never know. like you could be standing next to somebody and the next minute they're cutting you. >> reporter: we know that the victim was in -- police don't believe this is a hate crime but they believe it's a random robbery. the suspect is believed to be homeless.

>> amazing. >> very impressive. what do you say about the weather? i guess mother nature is impressed with what she's doing with us. >> it will get better for us next week. i have better news next week for those of you wondering when it will calm down and warm up and feel like spring. for now, we have to talk about the return of a bit more winter weather to the tri-state tomorrow. a view from the top of the rock camera shows a pretty quiet evening, mostly clear, 43, temperatures aren't that bad. the cloud will be rolling in later on tonight and in a few spots right now we have 30s. emerson 38 and 36 in parsippany. it's chilly in a few spots around. to the north and west we're seeing up to the 20s in monticello, 40 in farmingdale and bridgeport and 40 in morristown. winds are light at this time but they're going to pick up in intensity tomorrow a little bit as that low comes out of the midwest and sort of spins just off the coast a bit. so fair skies across the area
so is this mix of rain and snow. this is just part of it. when that energy reaches the coast it dives south and hits here, it will start to spin up just a bit. that's why why the area south and west of the city are likely to see more snow. by 8:00 we're starting to see the leading edge of this mixture coming in across southern new jersey. then it starts to spread through the central part of new jersey into the city by 1:00. now, watch out around barn i gat and parts of ocean county. one of the forecast models is indicating that you may see some heavier accumulations of snow. i've pushed this 1 to 3 inch band from hunterdon county to parts of ocean county. we'll be updating you tomorrow with the latest forecast. the rest of us about an inch or less of snow. hunterdon is under the advisory for saturday, wouldn't be surprised to see ocean added to that. we have cold weather alerts, freeze watch and warnings from midnight tonight into sunday morning because the temperatures will fall. if you get snow, it will
