>> simone, tell me about your dream last night. what happened? you woke up? did you dream about it? >> no, i didn't dream about it. as soon as i woke up yesterday i walkeded into aly's room and i said i have a really good feeling about today. she said me too. >> you know, it was interesting. i was at the match watching you guys and you guys had done the vault and unevens and i looked up at the big scoreboard and my hands got sweaty. simone, what were you thinking when you knew where standings were at that point? >> i actually didn't really look at it because we just had to go to beam so quickly. everyone told me afterwards that i don't even think it was a tenth apart. it's not something you can worry about. we can only worry about the routines and not what judges give us.

of steel. your sister cried from the minute you struck the last landing until the anthem was over. it was beautiful. aly, when you finished your floor routine, it was such an emotional, beautiful, wonderful moment for everyone in the audience. what was it like for you at that last moment when you finally needed something beautiful? >> it was a very special moment. i broke down in tears r thinking about all of the hard work. obviously four years ago when they broke the tie and i got fourth place, it was very heartbreaking. i used it for motivation every single day in the gym and just being here in brazil, it felt like we were in the u.s. everyone was cheer standing up and cheering for us. it was a special moment i'm never forget. >> your parents were doing their

always do. gabby, you won this last olympics. what did you say to your two teammates after they scored so well? >> i told them they did an amazing job and they deserved it. they worked so hard in the gym. i'm so happy for them. i love them so much. it was a phenomenal competition to watch. >> sunday on the unevens. we punish you the best of luck. laurie wrote this. it's blowing my mind how the same little girl i used to see doing flips on my bed at age six now has a gold medal. and you know what, guys? we have something for you. okay. simone, i think there's a podium to your right. do you see a podium with something like a covering over it or sheet over it. stand up if you wouldn't mind

were you feeling right before the race? did you feel off? >> you know, i was definitely feeling great right before and just something happened in the middle of the race where, i don't know, it just fell apart. >> you were leading by a fraction and phelps surged and did you just not have anything in the tank to go after him? >> i think i used too much energy in the front half and that hurt me toward the end. you know, it happens. >> you said after the race that you need a ml break from the sport. talk me through that and do you feel the same way this morning? >> i definitely feel the same way. i haven't taken a break since i first started swimming. the longest break i've taken was a month and going day in and day out and beating up your body takes a toll and being at the age i am right now, it's definitely time i need a break. can't say it's over. >> i'm glad to hear that.

good morning, everyone. 7:26. looking at the grand central parkway. it's 76 degrees out right now, friday, i'm darlene rodriguez. police are trying to find a man wanted for attacking a woman in riverside park. investigators released this sketch of the suspect. they say he approached the woman while she was walking the dog near 107th street last friday. he allegedly asked the woman for the time and put her in a chokehold and tried kissing her. belt and biting him. we have delays in both directions on the l train. if you're getting on the roads, that overturned dump truck is still out there on 80 eastbound after exit 19. delays back a few miles. 80 westbound in patterson a jackknifed tractor-trailer leaving one lane open between exit 58 and 59. you have over a three-mile delay there. 287 a very serious accident southbound by the new jersey turnpike. only one lane gets by here as

the redeemer sits a community named for a saint. what are challenges living in a favela? >> health, education. those are top priorities. >> few residents would stop to speak with us on camera for fear of associating with our group traveling with a police escort. >> often h to an outsider but to people that live in them, they rebuilt the homes several times over three generations. you see building materials everywhere. you see stacks of cement. it looks chaotic. these are people who are developing -- plastering a wall. these are people who are slowly but surely improving their homes. >> we talked about basic services. everywhere you look there's garbage.

>> it is. it constantly piles up unless the government comes in and cleans it or community members do it, which both can happen and do happen occasionally but not frequently enough. >> you know, there's graffiti everywhere. not only here in the but also in rio. >> in communities where they kind of run thi historically you'll see that graffiti. >> means that's their territory. >> gangs still have a presence here. a program launched by police eight years ago promised to make things safer and to some extent it has. heavily armed officers patrol the favela wearing body iron with their names and blood type stitched over their hearts. community and police working

he says the police and community are like a family. sometimes he says they have problems but they try to solve them in a way that benefits both sides. i was talking to a member of the military police. i kept asking him, is it safe here? is it safe here? he kept saying yes, yes, yes and yet he's wearing a bulletproof vest and two of his fellow officers followed him out of the police station and to be perfectly honest, they are following us everywhere we go. >>o is okay. >> is it safe? >> it was much safer two years ago than it is now. >> because the economy turned down it's gone bad again? >> part of it is economy decline. part of it is policing program itself lost respect as it rolled out so in other places where there was widespread abuse and part of it is that people were much more hopeful. >> hope remains. this man opened a shop six

people outside have an opinion. what don't they understand? >> he said it's become peaceful. he lived here for 50 years and now he sells snacks and drinks to tourists. the people here at the end of the day get ready to go to bed, they look down and see the lights of rio. that's sugarloaf right over there. they see modern rio down here. is there a sense here of envy, life down there? >> i think there's both. people envy. that's why you have high crime rates. part of the reason and also the desperation and inequality. >> do they want to be there? >> not necessarily. people are born and raised in these communities. they're very culturally vibrant. they don't see the same sense of community in those neighborhoods. >> they may walk down during the day and work down there and at night this is where they want to return for their sense of community and comfort. >> there's an element of people
