" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" nikki: good evening. welcome to local 5 news, i'm nikki davidson. glad you're with us tonight. nikki: it's a busy weekend for criminal investigation teams around the metro. early this morning law enforcement got called to a third homicide investigation. around 1:45 a-m, polk county deputies were called to evolution nightclub at 43-97 northwest 6th drive for a fight outside the club. when they arrived, they heard shots fired and found a 20 year old man with a gunshot wound. nikki: that man was identified as dashwan smith of des moines--he was transported to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries it's the third homicide around the metro area within 30 hours. local five's jacob peklo joins us now with the latest on the investigation. jacob/bam nikki, the latest homicide took place early this moring outside of a night club. there were hundreds of people in the area when that shooting took place, but so far police haven't
10:03 pm
been able to find a suspect. stephen dingman is familiar with the extra traffic outside of his home near the evolution nightclub, nats: "we'd call the sheriff to come in." but he knew sunday morning was different. stephen dingman, neighbor: "this was a kind of a round of maybe 10 shots." jacob peklo, reporting: "so, a lot of?" stephen dingman, neighbor: "yeah, i mean really fast, so you couldn't really sit and count them, but they were really fast." neighbors say it's gotten a lot busier, and far more crowded since the switch to a nightclub. diann weinman, neighbor: "yeah, neighborhood bar. people coming in and shooting pool and that was it. it was that way for years, but not now." early sunday morning, police were called to the nightclub after a report that a fight outside had gotten out of control. sgt. brandon bracelin, polk county sheriff's department: "when the gunshots were going off, people were dispersing. i'm sure they were scared, so that reduced the number of people. we went in there and were able, people were pointing to the victim and we were able to find him." despite the fact that so many people were still outside, police have had a hard time figuring out what led to a man getting shot. sgt. brandon bracelin, polk county sheriff's department: "i think the main thing that makes
10:04 pm
this case difficult is that there were a number of people there at the scene, however very few witnesses come forward and were able to describe what they've seen." twenty-year-old dashwan smith was rushed to the hospital, but died there from gunshot wounds. police were also notified that three other people were admitted to the emergency rooms with similar injuries overnight. diann weinman, neighbor: "the county needs to do something about whether or not a hip hop bar should be in a residential area." after the investigation into the shooting incident is complete, police say it's possible the owner of the nightclub could also be disciplined. sgt. brandon bracelin, polk county sheriff's department: "that, we will work on at a later end. there will be some things that we will look at. we still have to look at the incident to determine if there was anything that led up to it that could have been done differently." jacob/bam police were expected to stop working for the day, just a little while ago. at this time, they are still looking for any tips about the incident. if you know anything, you're encouraged to call the polk county sheriff's office or crime stoppers. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five

news. we are iowa. nikki: police are investigating two other homicides in the metro over the weekend. in waukee-- police were called to the 500 block of southeast around 1:30 morning. that's where officers found a man with multiple gun shots wounds. 41-year-old gino to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. several hours later, police arrested 42-year old brendan mcguinness in the afternoon and charged him with first degree murder. nikki: multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the search for mcguinness... he was arrested on the east side of des moines when a passerby found him on a sidewalk with a minor head injury... not knowing who he was officers responded to assist and recognized mcguinness. he was arrested without inicident... friends of the suspect and victim can't understand why this happened... "they had a little quarrel that they were kind of working through from an incident that happened a couple months again, but nothing that would lead to murder." nikki: mcguinness is
10:06 pm
held in the dallas county jail. this is waukee's first homicide in nearly 40 years. nikki: in des moines, a teenager was arrested and charged in a different murder. it happened around 10:30 friday night near the intersection of 13th street and jefferson avenue in des moines. when police arrived, they found the body of a 28 year old man with a gunshot wound. nikki: police later identified the victim as jose lopez of des moines. after spending all day investigating, they arrested 17 year old josue socop and charged him with first degree murder. they say there was a dispute between the two that led up to shooting and say the crime was an isolated incident. theres not some trend of violence that will touch the entire community, its obvious there's some kind of interpersonal relationship that for whatever reason at the moment goes horribly bad. nikki: this case is the 14th homicide in des moines in 2015... nikki/ots burglars smashed windows and
10:07 pm
broke into two des moines pharmacies overnight according to des moines police... at the medicap pharmacy on beaver avenue police were called out to a tripped security alarm... the glass front door was smashed in and the building had been rifled though... then around 2:30 a.m. this morning police responded to another tripped security alarm at the medicap pharmacy on easton blvd... in that case the front door was also smashed in and pill bottles were missing from behind the counter and cabinets. video survelliance reportely shows three suspects breaking out the glass on the front door. no arrests have been made -- the investigation is ongoing. nikki: drivers... tomorrow morning watch your speed on the roads... iowa law enforcement officers will increase their presence in western polk county monday morning... officers from several agencies will be enforcing all traffic laws and paying close attention to impaired drivers. they say its an effort to raise awareness for safe driving habits and save lives... nikki local organizations and churches are teaming up to make a stand against hunger. hundreds of people gathered
10:08 pm
from different backgrounds for the "vote to end hunger rally" at grand view university. that's where they learned how to engage presidential candidates to make hunger a priority issue. the event featured several speakers including church leaders, the association, elected state officials, and more. "here in the united states i think the most important thing is to give people a living wage so many people are at food shelters because they're working poor they're not getting wages sufficent enough to provide for the basic necessities of life " nikki: the event also had training on how to attend the iowa caucus. nikki: comic book and sci-fi fans from across the country gathered right here in des moines. the new mid-west comic con took place inside the iowa events center. it's designed to be one of the largest family- friendly comic book conventions in the country. several vendors, creators and illustrators, and even celebrity guests were on hand.... organizers say
10:09 pm
proceeds from the convention will stay local and help the community grow. nikki: coming up on local 5 news at 10... a strange light in californa has some asking serious questions about its orgin.... we'll tell you what the "official" explanation is. nikki: and.. some i-hop customers got the surprise of their lives... when this happened in the parking lot. the full story is coming up. james: and i'll have your forecast ahead "monday on good morning iowa... we take a look at a growing global problem... 40-percent of the food that is grown, ends up in a landfill.. we break down hot to cut down on food waste in your home. plus...a look at a changing forecast the cool, dry weekend makes way for a bit of a warmup...then some rain that's monday on the

10:14 pm
a health issue is just one of the reasons why the farmer you're about to meet decided to switch the city for the farm. now his entire family is by his side, doing what they love in south central iowa. local 5's claire powell has the story in this week's farm to family. " "neither of our parents were farmers, it was a huge learning

curve" for the last eight years "come on jack" ethan book has made farming in rural iowa a way of life, after growing up, surrounded by a city. "when we purchased the farm, it was bare and no good fence everything you see we've built or brought and family has helped. its been a big community effort from family, friends to knoxville area" he always thought a farm would be nice, but it was sky-high cholesterol that finally forced the move to happen. ,"it was worrisome. we just needed to make some changes and pushed us to moving and living to the country. 2-10 and if cows why not pigs" now he, his wife and their five children help make the rotational grazing farm run like clockwork. "here jack!" "youngest two boys are cat herders, our daughter loves to work with dogs, and they all have their own piece they enjoy as well" from the silver- colored meat rabbits.
10:16 pm
"this year ill be in 4h so i hope to have some rabbits too" to the chattery chickens , small horned dexter cattle, and guard dogs "we've got a little bit of everything" and of course, ethans favorite "i really love the pig's personalities, out in the woods and acting like pigs, happy. they've definitely become my favorite part of the farm" the curious herford hogs come from a long lineage of iowa bred pigs and roam the timber freely. "we love our livestock to have a story, cool to have iowa pigs and we're iowa people through and through" as the seasons change, so do the locations of the livestock around the farm's 40 acres. a working, rural routine for the family settled along crooked gap road. "it all works together in a lot of harmony we hope, it's a symphony on the farm moving it all together" from knoxville, claire powell local 5 news,

with not one, but two days of high school playoff football! and while that is awesome! it also made for a really tough week of top plays...we had to leave out plays that most weeks would've made it in.... let's check out our top 5 plays of the week all made by local athletes. play number five...comes from this afternoons wild game. penalty kill winding down for the wild...and that's when kellan lain strikes. he tips away the puck, takes it himself and beats two men before just tapping the puck in to make it 2-0! take another look and listen... right as lain breaks past the blue line... you hear the super mario power up noise... very appropriate and i think that helped him light the lamp, unfortunately it wasn't enough as iowa fell 3-2 to lake erie. play number four...is pretty much a pella highlight reel! they made so many plays this week, i just threw em all together. first up a pair of runs from noah clayberg... d-1 colleges, start offering this kid now!! you can get him at cost! he doesn't go
10:20 pm
down easily, i mean just look at this! carrying a guy with him into the endzone! speaking of that, here clayberg finds donovan holterhaus. and he's going to the promised land and bringing two guests! then the cherry on top, pella is so good when they make mistakes they still get rewarded. clayberg fumbles the ball, but payson vande lunde recovers and takes it to the house! the dutch headed back to state for a 2nd straight season. play number three...sends shivers down my spine. regional final between dowling and valley, maroons mykal sadler bringing the pain! knight of columbus! the crowd can't even believe it! take another look, that is elevation my friends! the maroons head to cedar rapids as the #1 team in 5a, stay clear of mykal sadler, a spike like that to the head could very easily send you back to fifth grade not to mention a concussion. play number two...se polk taking on dowling monday night... rams reaching into their bag of tricks.
10:21 pm
thomas mclaughlin looks like he's changing the call, but he's not. the rams snap the ball to cole hauser who flips it to jackson cole, cole then fires it back to mclaughlin into the endzone for the touchdown! look at this one more time. this is impressive for a few reasons, dowling quickly snuffed this out and secondly, cole throws this off his back foot! wow! rams put up a fight, but in the end saw their season end to the maroons... finally play number one... is a two-fer. valley and johnston tied at 17. dragons looking for the lead, but the tigers come up with the huge block! they would get the ball, and now cole hahn with a chance to win it from 40 plus...and it's good! the best part about this kick, is the poor johnston fan who caught the ball, heart break city! tigers are headed back to who caught the ball, heart break city! tigers are headed back to state where they'll get the rematch with dowling!! cole hahn number 95 in your programs, number one in our hearts! in our local 5 top five plays of

"(alex giaimo) the hawkeyes are 9 and 0 for the first time since 2009. (cj beathard) every game that we've won is a team win and you know i think it's a credit to this team as a whole it's not we don't have that many individuals on this team that are trying to take the spotlight we've got a lot of team players on this team. (giaimo) iowa tied the school record with their ninth straight win to start the season. (kirk ferentz) we've been in some tough, sticky situations a couple games that went right down to the last posession another one that was next to last one...so that really speaks volumes about the kind

of players that we are working with, the way they believe in eachother, the way they stick together. you know it's been a lot of fun to be with these guys i can assure you that. (desmond king) the resiliency, people come at us hard and for some reason we just find a way to bounce back and we can work our way through tough situations and over obstacles and we just come out with the win. (giaimo) cj beathard came up huge with 271 total yards. he played superman on this 7 yard touchdown run to give his team the lead and he did it all on an injured groin. (cj beathard) it was a quarterback draw and i was just doing anything i can to get it in the endzone. i felt like the only way i could get in was by jumping over the top you know obviously i want to hold on to the ball. (austin blythe) the toughness that he's displayed over the last couple of weeks is incredible. that's the kind of guy you want to play quarterback and you know he's doing a great job. jordan: friday evening
