" local 5 news at 6 in hd starts now. we are iowa" nikki: good evening. welcome to local 5 news, i'm nikki davidson. glad you're with us tonight. nikki: a man is dead after breaking into a home overnight...it's the city's 20th homicide this year. just after 2 a-m, police were called to a home at 20-20 east 14th street. when they arrived, they found a man dead

residents was taken to a local hospital and police are still searching for answers as to why they were targeted. nikki: local five's jacob peklo has been following this story throughout the day, and is live at the scene with more. jacob? jacob/live nikki, this homicide is different than most we've seen this year. it started out as a home invasion, and ended with the man who broke in dying. police are still trying to figure out who he is. around 2 o'clock saturday morning, des moines police received a call after a man broke into a home at 2020 east 14th street. police believe the man who broke in started fighting with two people inside the house. sgt. joseph frentess, des moines police department: "during that altercation he was injured, and then was found by officers and medics at the scene to be deceased." residents were injured and taken to the hospital. neighbors saw the house was surrounded, as they the crime scene. chuck pemberton, off with cop cars and everything. and it was like the cops were doing the christmas lights for us. it was crazy."

through the morning, interviewing neighbors and trying to gather information on the city's 20th homicide of the year. police are still unsure if the killing was done in self defense or if any weapons were used inside the house. sgt. joseph frentess, des moines police nothing that says there was a shooting and there's no evidence to show that a handgun was involved." neighbors don't know who the burglar is; police can't identify him either. sgt. joseph frentess, des moines police time, we're unable to identify who he is. there was no identification on him." sgt. joseph frentess, des moines police department: "they've already canvased the neighborhood. i think they've already talked to all the people in the residence." police are saying the death is an isolated incident, but it's still a little too close for comfort. chuck pemberton, neighbor: "it's a little bit spooky. it really is, it's a little bit scary." jacob the names of the residents are not being released at this time. an autopsy will be conducted in the coming days to determine the cause of the man's death. reporting live in des moines, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa.

a morning fire has destroyed a local motel.... around 7:30 a-m, firefighters were called to the cozy rest at 23-16 southeast 14th street for a fire in one of the rooms. when they arrived, they say the building was engulfed in flames. firefighters had to temporarily close down the area. there are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, nikki/ots all eyes in college football are now on the big ten championship. the iowa hawkeyes are number four in the country and taking on fifth ranked michigan state. jordan furbee reports from indianapolis as we get closer to kickoff... jordan how is it going? "nikki yeah we are on the field at lucas oil stadium and just behind me this is the tunnel the iowa hawkeyes will come out of in just more than an hour as they battle for the big ten championship game. kickoff is set for 8:17 local time here 7:17 iowa time. as we know the stakes couldn't be higher for the hawkeyes. obviously a big ten title on the line but they're also trying to continue record setting season. 12 wins for first time going for 13. and a spot in the college football playoffs now michigan state is a slight favorite tonight but anything can happen as the hawks try to continue their magical season. we have seen a

falwell jr. says he'd like more students to have concealed-carry permits. his comments came following the attack in california... the president urged all students on campus... thats 14 thousand five hundred people to get a permit... and the school also offers a free gun training course... nikki: planned parenthood supporters and allies held a national day of solidarity in washington today. the gathering was held in honor of the victims of the colorado springs shooting last week. three people died when a suspect opened fire inside a planned parenthood clinic in colorado. robert lewis dear is accused in the shooting. police still do not have a motive for the attack, or know why the clinic was targeted. nikki: ebay joins a growing number of companies offering increased parental leave to employees. the company will offer new moms 24-weeks of leave at full pay. new dads will be able to take 12- weeks of leave at full pay. the new benefits go into effect next year and apply to all hourly and salaried employees working at least 20 hours a week. companies are

local walmart stores hosted a support the salvation army. they set up collection bins inside walmart stores in windsor heights and ankeny for the 12th annual " fill the truck" toy drive. the goal of the event is to help provide new toys and winter coats to local kids in need. organizers say the support from the community is crucial ... and leaves a lasting impact on the people who are

"we have santa claus the kids can come and tell their wishes too. we have reindeer in the parking lot. we have finger painting and crafts. and of course today with the weather being almost 50 degrees, we have a lot of zoo animals out so people are enjoying the zoo."
