girls basketball coach and special education teacher is in jail this morning...charge d with felony sex abuse of a student. des moines police say 46 year old gerald "tig" johnson turned himself in yesterday afternoon. a warrant had been placed for his arrest over the charges. the school has placed johnson on administrative leave pwnding the results of the investigation. sabrina: the third thing you need to know before you walk out the door... sabrina: an end has come to a metro child abuse case, christina williamson was sentenced tuesday to five years in prison. while running a daycare out of her pleasant hill home, a video captured her abusing children. williamson pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment, in exchange for some other charges being dropped. sabrina: number four... sabrina: republican presidential candidate donald trump is facing major fallout over his proposed plan to bann all muslims from entering the u-s. his idea for for ensuring national security has met with a chorus of near-universal condemnation from across the country and

some have even called for him to drop out of the presidential race. sabrina: and finally in the top five... sabrina: it looks like guns will be a popular gift this holiday season. local sheriff's offices are struggling to keep up with the demand for permits to carry, and that's a big change from previous years. two factors fueling the surge...a 20-11 change to iowa's gun laws, and the recent gun violence making headlines across the country. sabrina: new this morning...a town hall meeting to discuss water quality in the hawkeye state.. sabrina: the topic has been a big issue over the past year due to concerns of nitrates in the raccoon and des moines rivers.. the league of conservation voters will host the meeting tonight, discussing the importance of clean water for iowa's agricultural sector. they plan to call on the governor and state agencies to take stronger action in protecting iowa watersheds. the meeting is scheduled for six p-m at north side public library. sabrina: meanwhile, the iowa department

sabrina: caucus night is quickly approaching and that means many iowans are getting ready to cast their vote. and there are plenty of candidates for caucus-goers to choose from. sabrina: but one major concern is for the iowans who may not be in the state at caucus time, and want to be sure to get their vote in for the caucuses. the iowa democratic party is launching a new initiative this election cycle, ensuring all iowans get the chance to cast their vote.. on february first, iowa democrats will be able to participate, using their phone. "we listen to people when they have feedback about how the caucuses work, and one of the things we heard is that some people can't participate, and certainly our military are so important to us and we just felt like that was something we really needed to concentrate on." iowans who are registered to

in take a look at this today... sabrina: beijin has been struggling with smog, and is now under its highest alert for pollution. but one of the country's artists has found a way to transform that air pollution....into bricks. he uses a vacuum to collect toxic particles from the air, some 30 times smaller than a strand of human hair. the artist wants to raise awareness of the problem, in hopes that the government will take steps to bring back fresh air. all: (reax)

senator chuck grassley invited wilson to testify at this senate judiciary subcommittee hearing. they're investigating any antitrust issues. it's still a "possible deal", which still needs regulator approval. sabrina: for girl scouts have have sold two and a half million boxes of cookies online this year. but the news is bittersweet. overall, sales were down and those iconic door-to-door and sidewalk sales are disappearing. the cookie program was originally designed to teach girl scouts about business and how to be entrepreneurs. online sales weren't part of the plan. but organizers have changed the app to give scouts more ways to be involved...even leading to some setting up their own cookie selling websites. the organization says by 2017, all girl scout councils will use the digital platform. sabrina: and finally, it took only hours for the newest barbie doll to

southeast iowa with sunday being central iowa's best chance for more showers. next week we'll fall back to the 40s and then 20s with a couple small snow chances. sabrina: new this morning, authorities in dallas county end up in a standoff earlier this morning... sabrina: we are still gathering details about the early morning standoff that involved woodward police.. just before two a-m this morning local authorities were able to bring the standoff to a peaceful end. the woodward police chief said that they had negotiated with the driver of a vehicle for just over an hour, and that the person did have a weapon. we will continue to follow this story throughout the day, look for more ahead on local five news

com. sabrina: this morning a roosevelt girls basketball coach and special education teacher is behind bars... sabrina: the educator turned himself in to authorities tuesday evening after a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of sexual exploitation by a school employee...and assualt with intent to commit sexual abuse... 46 year old johnson turned himself over to des moines hours before his team was set to play a game tuesday night. the school tells us coach johnson has been placed on adminstrative leave pending the results of this investigation... johnson just started coaching this team in the fall... but he is not a new face at the school. he used to coach girls basketball at the school about ten years he used to coach girls basketball at the school about ten years ago. we have a long history and you know a successful history with the school, he was not an unknown teacher or coach when he came back to roosevelt this year.

metro, and across the country, there is an increasing number of people wanting to carry a gun... and authorities are doing their best to keep up with the paperwork. local five's amanda krenz explains. this gun shop, j-l-m shooter supply in urbandale has been open for 25 years. like many businesses, they see more customers during the holidays... but this year, fear is bringing people through the door. after the paris attacks, and the recent shooting spree in san bernandino - people are scared. mike 11:17 it triggered a lot of fear in a lot of people, a lot of people that think it's time for me to be a little more prepared. there's another fear that drives people to mike sporer's business. when the president or high profile politicians talk about gun control. mike 13:13 people, as

may lose the right to own weapons, they just run out and buy everything they can grab. polk county sheriff headquarters is where people apply for and pick up their permit to carry a weapon in polk county. they're trying hard to keep up with all the new applications and issuing permits. bracelin 1:09 they're absolutely swamped. started seing an uptick in weaon permit applications beginning in october. take a look at a month by month comparison compared to last year in polk county. 100 more permits issued in october of 2015, more than 400 issued this november, and only a week into december there's a big increase compared to the whole month last year, 528 permits so far and most of them are new applicants. bracelin 1:54 out of that 528, only a little over 109 are renewals. sabrina: now, things aren't going to slow down after
