jon: the saying to be the best you have to beat the best. well that's exactly what northern iowa is out to do this weekend when they take on 4 time defending champs north dakota state. these two teams met earlier in the season-- with
6:15 pm
game touchdown pass from carson wentz to derius shephard with just 18 seconds left. this is a rivalry that has built up through the last couple of seasons. but uni hasn't had a shot at them in the post season since the bison started their streak of national championships. since their last meeting-- these two teams have changed-- mostly due to injury. ndsu will likely be without their star quarterback carson wentz-- who has participated in a practice or two this week but hasn't played since their loss week 6 to south dakota due to a broken bone in his wrist. the changes in both teams are worth noting-- especially to uni head coach mark farley. "i think they've got a different football team because they're playing with different people. i think we've got a different football team than what we played with so i don't know that we can compare the last game to this game that was two months ago. we're down four or five starters from a couple of months ago when we played them but to me that's the strength of our football team right now is that the next man that's coming in is playing very strong football for us and maybe a notch up from the person that they replaced. " northern iowa and north dakota state will

saturday at 11am on espn. winner heads to the fcs semifinals to play the winner of richmond and illinois state. jon: but before the panthers battle ndsu-- there's an in-state rivalry that needs to be settled on the basketball court. thursday night-- iowa state hosts iowa. alex giaimo has more from iowa city as the hawkeyes look for a little pay back after last year's loss at carver-hawkeye arena. " (alex giaimo) the hawkeyes head into ames for the annual cy-hawk battle as winners of their last four games. they are playing sound basketball right now but they know the task this thursday against the unbeaten and fourth ranked cyclones will be much harder. (fran mccaffery) yea you know we are playing the fourth ranked team in the country with a lot of experience, yea a lot tougher. (giaimo) iowa is looking to rebound from last year's blowout loss on their home court. (mike gessell) you know we had a really bad taste in our mouth after that game we felt we didn't play very well. you know, anytime you lose big like that to an in-state rival it's not fun. (giaimo) the hawkeyes are hoping third time's a charm. in 2013 they went into hilton colliseum..eventually losing the lead during the last seconds of the game. (adam woodburry)
6:17 pm
very good team. they got us the last couple of years. last time we played there it was a tough loss. i think that anytime we step on the court we want to win. (jarrod uthoff) it was a good game it was a tough loss. we were up five with a minute to go and we are looking to get a little redemption.. (mike gessell) it's going to be uh a tough game. great atmosphere. i love playing there, you know, guys that we've played against before. it's going to be a great matchup another great opportunity for us to play one of the best teams in the country. (alex giaimo) tipoff on thursday will be just after 6:30. in iowa city with your hawkeye heaquarters report. alex giaimo, local 4 sports.
