as you heard, happening now-- concerns over the winter storm moving concerns over the winter storm moving across iowa... elias: travel could be dangerous today with 98 of iowa's 99 counties in the winter storm warning, local law enforcement have urged people to stay off the roads if possible... even the most experienced drivers will want to take it easy with the predicted conditions. trooper michael clyde, iowa state patrol: "we always see people who think they know how to drive in icy weather, and those are the people that end up crashing their cars into ditches. you can't drive 70 miles an hour on snow and ice, you can't drive 60 miles an hour on snow and ice." elias: state troopers say if you get stranded on the road, be sure to say inside your car where it is safest. they also recommend packing an emergency kit, programming the state patrol into your phone, and bringing something to

elias: a monster storm system stretching from new mexico to michigan and georgia continues to march eastward this morning. since wednesday at least 43 people have been killed in 7 states from severe weather. millions of holiday travelers spent the weekend having frustrating, sometimes dangerous journeys home. abc's megan hughes has details. script: the christmas twisters marched across the texas landscape-- in the neighborhood of "row-lette" -- they tossed trucks and tore trees from the earth. the twister that hit garland, texas was clocked as an ef-4. mos: "you could see transformers blowing up" the survivors count themselves lucky. sot norma jimenez grateful we're alive and safe ... this can be replaced (mandatory on-screen courtesy: youtube/roamin' rich) in missouri, flooding like this led to several deaths-and led the governor to declare a state of emergency sunday night. in oklahoma, west texas and new mexico- snow created whiteout conditions

protest, as more than half of the country's governors, including iowa, say they do not want to allow them into their states. elias: the most recent in san bernardino, california, where a couple opened fire at a health center killing 14-people. authorities believe the islamic couple had become radicalized, leading to growing concerns over the influx of refugees and immigrants into the u-s. in june, a man opened fire inside of a south carolina church killing nine. the incident re- opened the debate over the confederate flag, which has been taken down in the state. elias: deaths of unarmed black men, such as freddie gray, jamar clark, and walter scott sparked protests by black lives matter. the city of chicago released dashcam showing the death of laquan macdonald...who was shot more than a dozen times by a white police officer. the city's police force is now being investigated by the justice department.

local 5 news midday in hd. we are iowa" elias: now. elias: a young des was killed in a morning. a burlington trailways bus lost control on i-55 in chicago early this morning. 33 passengers were on board the bus. four passengers and one was killed. that vicitm has been identified as underwood from des moines. the interstate in that part of chicago was closed for several hours the crash is still investigation. murder in maine

still with no answers. and police still investigating " this morning - police investigating a christmas murder mystery in maine. sot - lt. jeffery love / maine state police "the officers, once they arrived, found a vehicle. and inside of that vehicle found two deceased individuals. one male and one female." police say the bodies of thirty-five year old eric williams and his girlfriend -- twenty-six year old bonnie royer were discovered in this suv parked on a remote dirt road. sot - heidi wheeler / lives in the area "i'm just really feeling horrible for their families." police say one of the victims called 911 early friday morning - when officers arrived they discovered that suv less than a mile from the couple's home. the victims in the front seat dead from gunshot wounds. sot - heidi wheeler / lives in the area "shock, disgust, um, scary." authorities are now searching for information on the
