dealing with some light, but troublesome snow tonight. stephanie yeah, so far about a half inch has fallen in the metro... let's send it over to meteorologist james peterson with the latest. james/wxcenter snow advisory for central and southern iowa until 9pm tonight. snow will continue to fall across southwest and central iowa this evening. about 2 to 3 inches possible. des moines will likely be fairly low with about 0.5 to 1.5" possible. all snow will end this evening as it leaves southern iowa and we'll be left with a few slick roads and another fairly cold night with lows in the low teens. take your time getting home after work tonight, as the roads are getting slippery and accidents are being reported. james- james tags on camera jack: let's take a live look outside

and it's all because of something that came out of the mouth of iowa's republican governor terry branstad. as governor, branstad has historically chosen not to endorse a candidate ahead of the iowa caucuses. but today-- he deviated from diplomatic... and said something quite specific about presidential candidate ted cruz. quote: "i think it would be a big mistake for iowa to support him." stephanie: here now with more on today's big political story is local five's chief political correspondent amanda krenz. amanda/bam ted cruz is neck and neck with donald trump at the top of polls in iowa... that's what makes this comment from governor branstad so significant... again, he typically doesn't say much about candidates. but branstad is an outspoken supporter of renewable fuels and the impact they have on iowa's economy. ted cruz does not support the rfs - renewable fuel standard. "at the renewable fuels summit - a booth run by a group called america's renewable future had report cards to hand out... to show people which candidates support the renewable fuel standard and which ones one don't. (fullscreen) they only gave two candidates a

and ted cruz. eric branstad - had called for an immediate repeal." this is eric branstad, director of america's renewable future. he's governor branstad's son. he's spent the last year talking to all the presidential candidates and campaigns about the renewable fuel standard and what it means to iowa. 6:50 it's homegrown, made in iowa, it helps iowa farmers and the economy. eric branstad says many candidates have caught on to his message, including those who spoke at today's summit. santorum 4:26 rfs it's a market access provision that is not made by petroleum industry, allows this fuel to have access to the market. donald trump talked about how great it is that iowa is a leader in ethanol production. although he started his speech with a reaction to comments that governor branstad made a

said it would be a mistake for iowans to support ted cruz. trump sound ... i agree i agree.. amanda/bam we reached out to the governor's office to see if he was leaning towards endorsing a candidate... here's the response from his office - "governor branstad is neutral in the iowa caucuses and will not endorse any candidate and iowans will have the ultimate say in who wins the iowa caucus. however, the governor will never remain neutral in fighting for the renewable fuel industry and the jobs it creates in iowa. amanda/bam we also reached out to the cruz campaign today to get their reaction to governor branstad's comments and get any clarification on his stance on rfs - we didn't hear back. live in the studio... amanda krenz... local five news, we are iowa. jack/otsl:

event in ames tonight. she ran as a vice presidential candidate on mitt romney's ticket in 2008 and is the former governor of alaska. stephanie: trump earlier in the day was in winterset celebrating a native son. he stopped by the john wayne birthplace museum, where he also announced another endorsement: from john wayne's daughter. the western film actor's daughter aissa wayne said to the crowd the country needs a strong and courageous leader like her father. jack/lam on the democratic side, some trouble for hillary clinton today. a new cnn poll from new hampshire shows a huge lead for rival bernie sanders. he leads her by 27 points. today in iowa, sanders said he'll just keep trying to build on that burst of momentum. (senator bernie sanders) " from the bottom of my heart, above and beyond ideas, if you want somebody who is going to beat donald trump, who is going to beat the other republicans, i think bernie sanders is that candidate. increasingly heated of late. eager to slow sanders' momentum, hillary clinton has accused the senator of flip- flopping on guns and also called his health care proposal expensive and unrealistic. and some sad news to report from the ben carson campaign. earlier today, a van full of carson volunteers and a campaign employee hit a patch of ice... this was in cass county. the vehicle flipped on its side and was hit by another car. one person in was taken to the trauma center at a hospital in omaha. carson cancelled the rest of his campaign events today to head to omaha. jack: we'll have more on the road conditions here coming up later in the news. stephanie: also coming up... the oscars are supposed to be all about celebrating the movies. but this year, there's something else dominating the conversation. jack: but next... the latest shocking accusations out of flint, michigan, after lead is found in the local water supply. topping national headlines today... stephanie/3mon: that water crisis in flint, michigan. the city's mayor traveled to washington today - meeting with president obama to try and get more federal funding. this as angry residents filed new lawsuits this afternoon against the governor and state health officials. the state is now under investigation after it changed its water source from lake huron to the flint river to save money, exposing residents to toxic levels of lead but allegedly waiting five months to warn the public.. sonya austin: "my baby and i are breaking out and itching from bathing in the water stephanie/3mon national guard troops are now on the ground passing out water and filters. president obama has declared a state of emergency and white house officials say more federal aid is possible. as for governor rick snyder.. he maintains he did not initially know the severity of the situation and is expected to address this
