athletic trainers on the watch for concussions. local 5's claire powell is live at the tournament with more on this story. claire? claire: jack, there's a proposed bill that just passed into the senate education committee all focused on preventing and being able to diagnose concussions in what legislators are calling "collision sports". one of those sports? you got, wrestling. this sport is the main reason senator tod bowman authored the bill -- he's proposing that every home team has an athletic trainer, doctor or physical therapist present at every varsity collision sporting event. other collision sports are football, girls and boys soccer, lacross, and hockey. if a concussion occurs- trainers have 48 hours to report it to a-d's. making sure schools are doing the most they can to keep student athletes safe. the goal is this bill to increase quality of injury assessments to

number of life long debilatating injuries" claire: now this bill- again requiring athletic trainers to be present at every varsity collision sporting event- passed the senate subcommittee monday. next it will hit the senate education committee. biggest challenge for the bill? this would be an unfunded mandate. meaning no help from the state, could mean big issues for smaller schools with smaller budgets. we'll have much more on this story at 10, with opinions from parents to athletes on the mat. live from wells fargo arena, claire powell, local 5 news we are iowa jack: in statehouse news, working against sexual violence at the capitol today. jack: members of more than 20 sexual assault programs from across the state asked lawmakers to support

sexual violence survivors. they made the case for a steady amount of funding that goes toward their issue. they also want a civil order of protection for domestic assault survivors. "beth barnhill iowa coalition against domestic assault - currently that's only avaiable to domestic violence survivors...if they choose to do so. " stephanie: in other news at the statehouse.... if you're an avid bike rider, something that could keep you safer. a bill cleared a senate committee on tuesday that would require drivers cyclist riding in the same direction to pass on the left lane opposite side of the road. under the the driver would not be allowed to return to they passed the the bill was submitted as a accidents. other states have similar laws on the books. the bill is now up vote. today is an important day in the transition to privatized

it's the deadline for 560 thousand iowans to people to pick which private company they want to manage their healthcare coverage. another important date is less than two weeks away. march 1st is when iowa is supposed to be changed over from medicaid to managed care. we'll continue to keep you updated on this story as the deadline approaches. jack: it's also funnel week at the statehouse. that's when bills die if they don't make it out of committee before the end of tomorrow. one bill that's gaining some traction this session would expand iowans' access to medical cannabis. families whose lives are affected by diseases they say would be helped by cannabis oil, gathered today. they're calling for cannabis oil to be grown and sold in iowa. stephanie: new at 6, a parent threatens a school and causes the district to up security this morning. stephanie: it happened at the collins- maxwell middle school and high school earlier this morning. two angry parents came to both schools, and threatened a

members. both schools then increased security at the buildings, though police say it was not a lockdown. one of the parents was picked up on a warrant a few hours afterward. his warrant was from texas and is unrelated to this case. police say no one has been charged. jack: cops say they know who robbed two bars in webster county -- now they just have to catch him. both burglaries happened early new year's day, one at rungo's bar in stratford and the other at the iron saddle saloon in dayton. after getting tips, investigators have named matthew moore, as a suspect. they think moore is living in the des moines area. webster county would appreciate a call if you know anything. stephanie: and new information now on a 2006 case out of ottumwa in which two men allegedly lit a house on fire, killing two people. christopher yenger and zachary dye submitted written pleas of not guilty today and asked for a speedy trial. we reported back in january that after 10 years of no movement on the case, the two men were arrested by

director jon schaeffer. this is local 5 news at 6. we are iowa." jack: a major development in the south carolina presidential primary. jack: governor nikki haley has just endorsed republican presidential candidate marco rubio, days before saturday's primary. the popular governor is giving a needed boost to rubio, while the top two candidates battle it out over abortion today on the campaign trail. " the are just 3 days until republicans vote in south carolina and governor nikki hayley is hoping her endorsement could give a win to marco rubio. hayley: "i'm looking for someone who?is really going to make a difference not just for our party but for everyone they represent in the country." south carolina's popular governor, nikki haley, has enjoyed approval ratings of 81%... and rubio, polling at 14% could use the boost in south carolina. rubio: sot--rubio "the road we're on is not

decline. if we lose this election, the next president will be sanders or clinton." meanwhile ted cruz throwing down the gauntlet with donald trump, sot cruz "donald trump if you want to file a lawsuit, challenging this ad, claiming it as defamation, file the lawsuit." trump has been threatening legal action over this cruz ad, released in the wake of justice scalia's death nats trump "i am pro- choice in every respect..." narr: we cannot trust donald trump with these serious decisions. on the trail, trump says cruz is a liar sot trump: cruz said, he is not pro-life. he said i'm not. i'm pro-life. you can't lie to people like that.
