>> good morning, it is 6:00 a.m. on this monday, february 16 we're following breaking news. >> a powerful explosion rips through a building in philadelphia. miraculously, everybody escapes serious injury. >> a fire breathing stunt backfires at a philadelphia tattoo convention. >> accuweather is tracking cold weather and the arrival of snow tonight. >> because of the cold that means archdiocese schools will be closed. high school students have the day off for teacher development. >> chopper 6 is live over the scene of breaking news, a huge fire burning right now in west philadelphia, the location the

200 block of south 52nd street. this fire has been going since 4:30 a.m. an hour and half, so obviously firefighters are having a lot of trouble putting this out or at least place it under control. the entire building has been evacuated. hopefully nobody was left inside. they have the ladders up and they are trying to fight it from the air. most of the fire and smoke coming from the roof of the structure. this is a story we'll be following throughout the morning. >> in fact let's go over to david murphy, karen rogers to look at weather and traffic. david it is a terribly cold morning for the firefighters to be out on the job. >> reporter: no kidding and everybody else who has to go out and brave this. take a look, because we have a windchill advisory in effect this morning until 11:00 a.m. it's during those times we expect the worst windchills. at bad as 20 below. ment temperatures 3. reading a new record low of 1 below. allentown, 1 degree below zero.

ac airport has a new record at 2. wilmington tield the old record -- tied the old record. the big issue is the wind that's running in the teens. that's giving you windchills feeling well below zero. 16 below in philadelphia. same thing in allentown and reading. 19 below in wilmington. getting closer to 20-degree below zero threshhold. you get frostbite easily in conditions like this. it takes 30 to 6 minutes for unexposed skin to pick up frostbite. in the poconos it could take as little as 15 to 30 minutes. 3 on the storm tracker 6 live app. 6 degrees by 8:00 a.m. this afternoon we moderate, but only to 21 degrees and we'll still have windchills around zero. so it will be very cold.

later this evening we're looking at the arrival of snow. that will continue overnight until midday tuesday, it will accumulate, we have a winter storm watch in philadelphia and points north right now and a warning in the pink counties that's most of south jersey and delaware. we're looking at accumulating snow it will be worse the farther south you go, because this is a southern storm system. we'll talk numbers in terms of what to expect. karen, what about about roads this morning. >> reporter: we'll go back to the breaking news, chopper 6 over the scene. we're looking at this, fire, the flames out of control 52nd and locust. we see the number of crews on the scene. fire crews on the scene trained on the fire. look at the emergency workers blockerring the roads. expect -- blocking the roads. expect icy conditions. anywhere up the water conditions and run off you'll see ice.

52nd and locust are blocked. use 51st and market street. this is causing a detour on the 52 bus, on the route 52 bus you want to watch for detours. you can see the flames shooting out of control with the fire scene. a number of emergency workers blocking off the roads in west philadelphia. 52nd and locust street. chopper 6 live on the scene. as we go back to the maps. it's not only a fire location in north philadelphia. erie avenue between 17th and 18th, as well that's a two-alarm building fire. looking outside live on 422 we are better we had an accident eastbound at oaks. that's cleared. the main roads are dry but expect slick spots on the sides of the road and the secondary roads this morning. an accident at ruth road at stall road. a few things going on when we expected light volume on the roads this morning. >> chestnut is usually a sleepy place at night but overnight

into this morning an explosion destroyed a building and sent residents into the cold air. let's go over to annie mccormick. >> reporter: good morning, tam its freezing cold this morning. i meant to give you an-year-old how that is effecting how crews are able to respond to the gas explosion. you can see the iced over streets. if you're familiar with chestnut hill you know the roads are hilly. over to the right, you can see the buildings behind the pgw trucks and the crews that remain on the scene. that's where the brunt of the explosion happened. this is video showing the glass windows that were blown out. according to a resident, that is a two-story apartment building with people upstairs and downstairs.

before 2:00 a.m. a resident heard what he thought was a car that ran into the building. he has been told it was a gas explosion. >> we could see flame in the basement and that somehow extinguished itself, it was a major explosion and no fire, it's amazing none of us were hurt. >> reporter: an back here live, amazing in a nobody was hurt. now, initially the buildings next-door to that one that have apartments in them, the people in there were out of the homes they are back inside this morning. the 4 or 5 people where they believe the explosion did occur they need to find somewhere else to live. red cross is assisting and pgw is on the scene trying to figure out and investigate exactly what happened also, philadelphia fire crews out here and city streets department putting salt down trying to make it as helpful always possible so crews can get around the icy roads.

annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." >> one of the performances at the philadelphia tattoo arts convention turned dangerous. a performer breathing fire accidently set himself on fire at the p-a convention center last night. an "action news" viewer captured the scene. the flames jumped to the booth's curtains, but the performer got the situation under control. the performer did not have to be taken to the hospital. developing this morning in copenhagen police say they have arrested two men suspected of helping the gunman who carried out the deadly attack also in the city. they will fails -- face a custody hearing today. >> police killed the attacker. the 22-year-old suspect had a history of violence and may have been inspired by islamic terrorists. he opened fire on a seminar on free speech with an artist who

northwest we have windchills that are dangerous this morning. feels like 16 below in philadelphia. i was outside right now and i was reminded of a time when i was about 21 and i was at the top of a ski slope in vermont that's what it felt like. i had the whole parka thing going on then. cover up as much as possible. frostbite is a concern you can get it in as soon as 30 minutes with unexposed skin. we have cloud cover marching in west of philadelphia. we'll get early sunshine, but the clouds increase as the day goes on. allentown, 18 degrees, sun and clouds. bitter cold out there with windchills below zero most of the day. and 23 degrees in atlantic city, sun mixing with clouds, very cold in ac, as well. in philadelphia, 21 degrees increasing clouds, bitter cold winds running northwest at 10 to

20 miles per hour. here's how the numbers go in the single digits by 8:00 a.m. 15 by 11:00 a.m., 21 around 3:00 p.m. future tracker 6 shows you by 8:00 p.m. radar will begin to pick up some snow down in the far southern reaches. area say around dover delaware. by 10:30 or 11 when adam an cecily are on on channel 6 "action news" and 6abc, that snow will be inching closer to philadelphia. in the overnight hours into tomorrow mornings commute we'll see steady snow popping through the region, notice how it's lighter shades of lavender in allentown, and heavier in philadelphia and heavier still down by the shore. that's because there's a southern storm system, the farther south you go, the more significant the snow will be. the whole thing gets done around noon. overnight tonight up until about noon that's when you have to look out for this coming through. the beginning will not be all that bad with light fluffy

>> welcome back you're taking a live look here, chopper 6hd is live over a two-alarm building fire in west philadelphia. it's an awful night 3 degrees a night to be forced out on the street or to be a firefighter on the the scene. the water turning to ice soon as it comes out of the hose. we're hearing this building housed medical offices. this is the 200 block of south 52nd street. firefighters did evacuate the building so far no reports of injuries, let's go over to karen rogers to learn about the detours that are going on because of the fire. you can see the number of crews on the screen, as well as the icy conditions to expect along

the roads. this is the intersection of 52nd and locust streets. you can see the number of crews blocking off this intersection altogether right here. you want to avoid this area if you can. stick to 51st and market. this is causing problems with the route 52 bus being detoured through the area. watch for this in west philadelphia. chopper of live on the scene a number of emergency workers out here, 52nd and locust. we see flames and smoke shooting you mean from that scene. it's not the only fire location we have one in west philadelphia and north philadelphia, erie avenue between 17th and 18th street that's a two-alarm buildings fire, as well. vanango at bullet leisure good at -- bullet -- butler streets. we're looking at speeds on the big picture moving just fine because it's a holiday. we expect light volume out there today. watch the city streets or the

>> breaking right now an explosion rattles an apartment building while families sleep inside. we're live on the scene with the latest information. >> we're waking up to record-breaking cold as a snowstorm comes our way accuweather is tracking a double dose of winter. in fact we want you to know that archdiocesan schools are closed because of the cold. high school students already had a scheduled day off. >> chopper 6 is live over the scene of a huge fire that's coming from a huge building along the 200 block of south 52nd street in west philadelphia. this fire broke out at 4:30 a.m. it's been burning for two hours now. seems like much of it is coming from the roof area. firefighters are trying to get it under control. we have new video from the scene, from the ground and take a look as firefighters are fighting this a lot of the water from the hoses is simply

freezing on contact with that ladder. it is such a cold night right now, the firefighters are out there risking their safety trying to save others. the whole buildings has been evacuatedded -- evacuated, but you see fire and smoke coming from the structure. >> it's a horrible night to be working out fighting a fire. david murphy dave has more on the cold. karen rogers has traffic. >> reporter: as we take a look a windchill advisory is in effect until 11:00 a.m. in the counties highlighted south of the poconos and east of lancaster. we have windchills making it feel like 15 and 20 degrees below zero. 3 in philadelphia. new record lows already hitting in reading and atlantic city. wilmington has tied a new record low. when you add the wind out of the northwest in the teens it's giving you windchills making it

feel like 16 below in philadelphia. 19 below in wilmington and 10 below in wildwood, right now. all these numbers very significant, and and frostbite is definitely a possibility. it can happen very quick i will. in the delaware and lehigh valleys. anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes is fast enough to get frostbite on exposed skin this morning. in time poconos it could be as little as 15 minutes. bundle up and cover up today. thanks are mr. president, we have a lot of schools off thanks to president's day. of course we have extra cancellations because of the cold. 3 degrees on the smart phone app. storm tracker 6 live app right now 6 degrees is what the temperature will be at 8:00 a.m. noon, 17. the high today will be 21 degrees and even by then, windchills will be severe. there's snow on the way tonight with a winter storm watch and warning across the region. i'll have more on that and future tracker 6 showing the arrival of the snow and how much we'll get coming up.

fer scoik you can see the main roads are dry traffic moving fine we expect lighter volume today with the holiday but expect slick spots. on the secondary roads even off to the sides on the main roads as well. be careful as you travel. an overnight explosion blew out the windows of a building in the chestnut hill neighborhood, somehow, the people managed to walk away. annie mccormick has the details. >> reporter: this happened at 2:00 a.m. in chestnut hill. pgw is on the scene. checking the lines organ the road. that buildings they do believe where the gas explosion did occur. take a look at this video. it will give you a closer look at the building. the glass windows were blown out during the explosion. there were several residents inside two apartments. we were told initially two other

buildings had to be evacuated. of that's why there were 1 people evacuated. the other building was cleared as safe those residents could go in. for paul mcginty and his family were not allowed to go in. >> we were asleep and i thought a car came down through the intersection and went through the building. it was like a huge bang andy immediately the buildings filled with smoke. >> reporter: back out here live, pgw out here for hours they remain out here on the scene. they were going door to door assessing the area and checking levels. we are told at this point they could be doing more roadwork. the city streets department was out here helping putting down salt because of the icy conditions left hind. because of the record-low temperatures not making this job

try and fight a fire a lot of water from the hoses is freezing on contact with the ladders they are using on the side of the structure and electrical wires additional things firefighters have to worry about. the. >> they train in all kinds of conditions david. but today is putting it to them. five degrees. >> reporter: worse than that when you consider the windchill. frostbite can occur quickly. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing we're dry. as we take a look outside there's sunshine up over the horizon. it's not going to help one bit and the clouds will get turkey as the day goes on anyway. the winds are out of the west/northwest you're looking at severe windchills. the current windchill is 16 below zero.

that's possible to get frostbite in a hurry if you're out there with exposed skin. cover up. if you're dressing for cold like this you lose 40% of the heat through your head. a hood or hat important. layers important. limit your out door times and keep pets indoors, as well. we'll get sunshine early we'll have clouds increasing as the day goes on. it will stay cold. today's high, 21 degrees, we'll hit that about 3:00 p.m. 20 by 2:00 p.m. in the single digits and teens throughout the breadth of the morning. we'll have snow arriving around 8:00 a.m. on the other side of the wilmington. 11:00 p.m. light snow filters in closer to philadelphia. this is a brand new run on future tracker 6. by 11:00 p.m. it shows snow closer to the city. the heavier stuff is after

midnight at 7:00 p.m. you can see how it's heavy snow in philadelphia and down toward the shore. a little lighter snow the farther north you go, this is a southern storm system you're talking about. the whole thing gets out of here by lunchtime tomorrow. along the way we're expecting some accumulation. this is light fluffy powdery snow because of the cold conditions. we're looking at 4 or 5 inches in philadelphia. an 8-inch total closer to the center of the storm. northern suburbs about 2 to 4. remember this depends on the track of the storm. we may have to adjust this depending on the track of the storm. the models are going from 4 to 6 to 6 1/2 inch range, excuse me, a little more farther to the south. the seven day from accuweather. bitter cold, 21 is the forecast high. snow arriving this evening and

>> welcome back taking a live look here, chopper 6 over breaking news story in west philadelphia the 200 block of 52 street. we're watching this you can see flames coming out of the roof of this two story building. now that the sun is up, look at that the fire spray everything turned to ice almost it seems as if the water as soon as it comes out of the home it ices up. there may be medical offices here, they have evacuated everybody out of the building. you can imagine what must have been like coming out into the freezing overnight hours.

two-alarm buildings fire, erie between 17th and 18th. that's creating a bus detour, route 2 bus. otherwise the speeds are okay on the main roads because it's a holiday. 611 at gurney avenue we have an accident at aning ton. an accident montgomery county valley forge road at fisher road. outside on the main roads. looking live, chester county, the 30 bypass, the main roads looking dry secondary roads more slippery. we can see patches of ice on the sides of the road. 340 we have report of an accident. reporting all of the traffic news on traffic with the hash tag 6abc traffic. check that out. 3 degrees in philadelphia. when you factor in the winds the bitter cold, minus 16 that's why we're seeing scenes like that life in west philadelphia with the ice hanging on the fire crews out there this morning.

tam. >> new on "action news," a fistfight broke out between crikette fans in australia. surveillance video caught a suspect vehicle police believe the driver killed tammy myers on thursday of last week who was out giving her teen daughter a driving lesson. myers and the gunman had a near collision and argument. the man followed the mother of four to her home where she was shot and killed. the family is shattered by the loss. >> you're disgusting for taking my mother's life. >> police are on the look out for a silver or gray does an. they released a sketch. suspect. there's no indication that myers had any prior contact with her killer before the near
