now look at another storm. winter storm watches, ice storm warning for nashville this weekend. a big deal going in from the west. it will be the cold front that creates that president it merges with a warm front. the big pink blob from little rock through nashville. your sunday along i-95, i-80 in pennsylvania could be a wreck. just north of boston tom llamas is there. >> ginger, good yorngmorning to you. it feels like negative 12. the ice is the real danger. this church looks like an ice palace. the icicles, two stories tall. some of them razor sharp. they're really heavy. we were able to break off a chunk safely. this is about 70 pounds. if this hits you, forget it. game over. this morning, the big chill. 21 states hit with a deep
freeze. from blinding whiteouts in kansas city to accidents on snow-covered roads in michigan. this car, pinned by a semi. both drive and passenger surviving. just outside of boston in revere two dogs stranded on a piece of ice that floated 500 feet from the shore. >> they were just in the yard they walked over the snow bank. >> reporter: firefighters using a sled to rescue them. >> you heard an explosion? >> reporter: in middle tennessee, people calling 911 reporting loud explosions. >> it sounded like an explosion underneath. it's like it moved the floor. >> reporter: turns out, it's the frozen ground expanding so much it burst. boston racing for another storm that the mayor tells us could make conditions even more dangerous. >> and the rain comes, freezing weather, it makes it difficult to get around. >> reporter: it's like hitting concrete. overnight, we were on the front
lines of dangerous ice removal in northern massachusetts. slabs of ice six inches thick. so solid, they could only be broken up with an ax and a mallet. this is probably good 45 pounds right here. after more than 100 reported roof collapses in the last week alone, some are fighting back with fire power. watch this man blowtorch the chunk of ice off a building in downtown boston. and that outfit we were with last night, olympic roofing, telling us they're getting 180 calls a day. as soon as they clear the ice, it reappears in the morning. we're going to get the latest on the fight against isis. the president rapped edwrapped up a summit with tough talk. the president ramping up the war against isis. trying to make it clear that the u.s. is not at war with islam. >> reporter: that's right, george. the president said that it is an
ugly lie to say that the united states sat war with islam. saying instead, the u.s. is at war with those who have perverted islam, as he made those comments the pentagon outlined plans for the largest military operation we have yet seen against isis. this would be an effort to retake the city of mosul in iraq. this is the crowd jewel for isis. this is an operation the pentagon said would involve 20,000 or more iraqi troops going in specifically trained by the united states for this mission. the operation would begin in april or may. and, george it's possible this operation would include some embedded u.s. troops for the purposes of calling in air strikes. that is a decision the president himself would make. >> 2 white house taking incoming in a different way. the former mayor of new york taking on the president saying he doesn't think the president loves america. >> reporter: yeah and giuliani
prefaced the comment by saying it may be a terrible thing to say. the white house response came from eric schultz, who said i agree with him on one thing. it was a horrible thing to say. >> thank you, jon. we'll have more sunday on "this week." all right, george to the latest on the deadly road rage incident in las vegas that left a mother of four dead. and arrest was made thursday after a tense standoff with police. authorities are looking for a second suspect. kendis gibson has the very latest. [ bleep ]. >> reporter: a one-week manhunt coming to a fraptic end in this las vegas neighborhood thursday. cameras rolling at 49-year-old bob meyers learns police have surrounded the alleged killer. >> are you all happy. you made my wife look like an animal and my son. there's the animal a block away! are you happy?
>> reporter: dozens of officers armed to the teeth surrounding erich nowsch. >> please! turn your [ bleep ] phone off. >> reporter: after a tens two-hour standoff police arresting nowsch, just 19 years old, on suspicion of murder, shirt lest and in handcuffs. >> nowsch was taken into custody. the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: naush has yet to be formally charged. initially described as random road range turned deadly we know tammy meyers knew nowsch. her husband saying she counseled him. >> she was really good to him. she fed him, she gave him money. >> reporter: police say they only learned of the personal connection hours before the standoff. bob meyers said this. >> i couldn't tell you this before. he knew where i lived.
>> reporter: nowsch's arrest just the latest twist in this bizarre and ever-changing case. initially, police say meyers was shot as a result of random road rage while teaching her daughter how the drive. later, authorities revealed she went home after the encounter, rounding up her oldest son who had a gun, and helped them track down the driver. the suspect fold them home and shot her in the driveway. this morning, police say they're still looking for a second suspect. while they believe nowsch pulled the trigger, they're still not sure who was driving the car. this morning, many are wondering what took so long for an arrest? the victim lived and was killed right back there. nowsch lived about a one-minute walk away. he's now facing three felony charges, george? >> can you, kendis. let's get more from ryan smith, our legal analyst. a bizarre story. tough for prosecutors.
they have a lot to sort through. >> that's right. it could be a slam-dunk case for prosecutors. which story do you believe? because in their current account, they're driving around the neighborhood they come upon these folks. these potential suspects. then they leave. in that sense, prosecutors will say they're deescalating. the suspects follow them to the home and open fire. that would point to the suspects being the responsible parties. >> one of the things we look at does nowsch claim he's was firing in self-defense? >> that will be tough to prove. they're saying he followed them home and then opened fire. where is the threat? he would have to claim imminent threat that was deadly and he was trying to fepd thought ing toing to fend that off with equal force. if they knew this guy, knew he was batd news, why not call the police? why not call 911? that will make the case harder for prosecutors. >> meantime another suspect
could be on the loose. we begin with the superbug outbreak at a los angeles hospital. raising concern across the country now. the bacteria linked to two deaths but nearly 180 patients may have been exposed, raising more questions about the design of a hard-to-clean medical instrument used on thousands of patients every year in the united states. here's cecilia vega. >> reporter: this morning, we have learned an 18-year-old student is among the victims of a potentially deadly superbug outbreak. >> his prognosis at this time is guarded but optimistic. >> reporter: an attorney for the teen telling us he spent much of the last three months in icu, after undergoing a common medical procedure at ronald reagan medical center and he remains in the hospital this morning. nearly 200 patients have been exposed to the drug resistant bacteria known as cre.
an outbreak linked to possibly two deaths. >> the symptoms for the patients were immediate. they developed, fevers chills and severe infections. accept sepsis right after undergoing the procedure. >> reporter: the bug was spread during procedures from october through january. ucla saying they followed manufacturer's guide lines. they have a stricter process in place. for "good morning america," cecilia vega abc news los angeles. now a developing story that could have a massive impact on the economy. labor talks that have threatened to shut down ports on the west coast have failed to result in a deal. the u.s. labor secretary is giving both sides one more day to strike a deal or he'll order people to washington. federal agents in michigan have arrested a man they say was trying to fly to the middle east to fight for isis.
the 29-year-old iraqi refugee was arrested at detroit's airport. agents became concerned when he couldn't explain why he bought a one-way ticket. two massive storms lashed the coast of australia. they're being called the cyclone sandwich. winds up to 180 miles an hour. tearing off roofs. triggering flash floods. the surf was so strong this shark washed up on the beach. a big scare in the sky during this air show in india. two stunt planes collided clipping wings. despite the impact the pilots kept control and landed safely. later, you could see the extent of the damage. and finally, it appears spell check is so 2014 at the white house. take a look. staffers misspelled february on a media schedule on february 6th. it could happen once right?

the beautiful, spectacular dolby theater this morning. this place is ready to go for sunday night. a lot of it is being kept under wraps. our friends at the academy are letting us share a few secrets. first, the "american sniper" trial. a ke medical expert on the stand yesterday. this morning, the prosecution with rebuttal. >> reporter: eddie routh's lawyers resting their case on thursday. one doctor was called to testify that he was insane. dr. mitchell dunn says while chris kyle could be a war hero to many. >> our family thaengs you for your service. >> reporter: to eddie routh on the day he killed kril and his
friend they were pig assassins. routh doesn't look up. kyle's rid doe, taya shakes her head. the defense is paying this expert $400 an hour. and routh is a fan of the pig-hunting reality show "boss hog." prosecutors attack routh's mother for not alerting chris kyle her son was this a mental hospital just one week before the gun range. you didn't think that would be useful information? maybe information that might have saved chris kyle's life? it doesn't occur to me at the time she responds. the jury could decide routh's fate as soon as monday. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news stephenville texas. an inside look at kidnapped california teen hannah anderson. hen she was abducted by a family friend two years ago.
for the first time we're seeing how the fbi saved her. pierre thomas has this exclusive. >> reporter: it was the ugliest of nightmare scenarios. a california house on fire. in the ashes, a shocking discovery. charred remains. christina anderson bound and gagged. nearby her 8-year-old son ethan. they had been killed. her daughter 16-year-old hannah was missing. the prime suspect, a trusted family friend 40-year-old james dimaggio. >> i'm begging you to let my daughter go. you've taken everything else. >> reporter: amber alerts issued. a massive search launched. the fbi called in to help. is there there's no turning back for him. i think he thought he and hannah would have a relationship. >> reporter: six days later, nearly 1,000 miles away. horse back riders their cascade, idaho, report seeing two people matching the descriptions. >> the first positive lead we had. >> reporter: the fbi september
up a jet with a sophisticated long-range camera. this is video exclusively obtained by abc news. look they discover a blue tent. then a dramatic moment two people. look again. it's hannah and dimaggio. dimaggio takes off his shirt and moves toward hannah. later, hannah waves. dimaggio never notices. he's over to the right tending the fire. hannah keeps waving. is she signalling the aircraft? it was time for the hostage rescue team to react. the assistant direct e oversaw the effort. >> they start ascending the morehead ridge, up around around for three miles. >> stealth was the key. >> steelt was the key. >> reporter: these photographs of the camp site seen for the first time give a hint of what the fbi believes was a dicey situation. this is dimaggio's tent. a rifle, a handgun, a machete.

"american sniper" the biggest hit of the nominees. but it comes down to "boyhood" versus "birdman." both really really innovative films. very good. it's a tight race. it's a tight race between those two. >> what could have put "birdman" over the edge ginger what she just did. if they're up there winning the oscar, i think they have ginger to thank. >> i hope they're watching today. and we'll learn something from h show. >> what is the one category that you're like hey, i can't try to pick it? >> the most exciting race is best actor. steve carell michael keaton eddie redmayne michael keaton

>> you picked a couple of women that have stood out in the red carpet the last few weeks. let's start with julianne moore. >> the red tom ford that she wore with the plunging neckline is fabulous. she's bringing out a lot of sex appeal. the green givenchy cow tour. the sparkly silver one with the feathers also givenchy. she's going to bring it. >> like sexy sophistication. what do those looks suggest in terms of what she may wear on oscar sunday? >> she could go more streamlined and sleek. i think this is a great way of a woman of a certain age to be sexy and subtle. it's not a crop top. it's not too revealing. there's just little subtle cutouts. it's sleek and streamlined. she could win. what a way to go? simple and black. >> that's beautiful. >> not something that will overpower her award.
