street where i am standing was the epicenter of an enormous police response and hundreds of officers from seven different agencies including the federal government trying to end a mass shooting in the building behind me, tonight it's the epicenter of the investigation into how and why that began. somewhere between 65 and 75 rounds from their rifles as the scene, we located one pipe bomb, it was three pipe bombs combined into one. >> police say that syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik were on a mission but what we know is that they were planning something. >> nobody goes home and puts together that kind of elaborate scheme to do that. >> he left the party after some kind of dispute, he returned with his wife, mother of their
6-month-old daughter, and went straight to the door attended by his colleagues at the health department, they were masked but one colleagues suspected it was farook, and that is where the chase began and led to a shootout. >> police fired 180 rounds at the suspects, the suspects are believed to have fired 76 rival rounds, malik and farook were heavily armed. pipe bombs and bomb makes materials were found in their home. they had recent travel to the middle east and that is where farook met his wife on muslim dating websites, farook's american relatives say they were shocked they did not see any evidence that this would happen. >> reporter: now, right now police are still inside of that building combing for any evidence they can find and the
fbi says that evidence is transported to washington, d.c. for analysis including thumb drives and cell phones and computers, what click ates all of this is perhaps this was a mixed motive attack, meaning farook may have had terrorist intentions and may have been a radicalized muslim. we expect to learn more in a news conference a couple of hours from now.
people here are mourning the loss of a father and friend and one of the victims of that shooting worked here in cape may at the department of health for more than a decade. >> he was a good person, i loved my father and always will. >> they spoke about his dad, they knew they were targeted in the california attack and hoped for the best. >> i came home yesterday, and saw it on the news and figured he would be fine. >> it wasn't until early this morning when my oldest son who lives in new jersey, called to let me know that he heard from jennifer, nick's current wife that he hadn't survived. >> he worked at the cape may county health department has a specter. >> he was a good guy. >> his former co-workers found
out this morning he was one of the victims. >> they got a facebook message, a message from his wife and that is how i was informed this morning. >> he was also an inspector in california, a job his ex-wife says he was proud to do. >> ensuring people were safe, he was a health expecter and worked on the hazmat team and did food inspections, he wanted to do his job to make sure his community was safe. >> reporter: and mr. thornton says that after what happened in california, county officials here are looking to step up security to county buildings. we are live in cape may county, eva pilgram, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. we are constantly updating all aspects of this story at 6abc.com, you'll find dozens of photos and videos along with live streaming updates as they
happen. >> a philadelphia police officer is recovering after a crash in the city's port richmond section, the officer's cruiser and another car collided on jasper street and east allegheny. the officer was responding to a call when he was struck by another car. folks living nearby heard the commotion and rushed to the scene. >> office was on a call and then the guy made an illegal turn and ran into the officer and we helped and pulled him out of the car. >> the driver stayed at the scene and there is no word if charges are pending. two thiefs in delaware are stealing holiday cheer from front porches in newcastle county and one victim caught them in the act and police released this video from a home in bear, the ups driver dropped off boxes and drives away and then a silver car drives by the home and backs up and then goes up and puts the delivery into
the car before driving off, they say that was 21-year-old michael leery and that 25-year-old brian tony was behind the wheel, officers have warrants out for both of their arrests. amazon's warehouse has more than new jobs to delaware county. the worst of it is happening at rush hour when everyone is trying to get home of course and the robbinsville mayor wants something done about the situation. nora muchanic joins us live now outside of the busy facility with the details. >> reporter: hi there, residents of robbinsville in upper freehold have had it with all the traffic when there is a shift change and it's ruining the quality of life here and when the mayor thought amazon was not taking it serious enough, if they cannot change the shift schedule. we'll have no choice but to shut the building down. that situation is the gridlock each morning and evening when
there is a shift change at amazon's fulfillment center. >> it's possible to go to school and work every day. >> amazon is paying for five off-duty police officers to direct the traffic but that is not solving the problem with adds employees to the already 4,000 working here traffic is choked and police report 25 accidents in the area during the last six weeks, residents are fed up. >> the kids are coming to school late every day, all of our friends can't get to work every day, it's craziness. >> trips that should take four or five minutes take a half hour. >> during the holidays it gets really, really bad. takes us 15 to 20 minutes. >> i'm in monmouth county and that is mercy county and we are all suffering here. >> amazon needs to step up to the place and do something about

holdups. we are continuing to follow the latest developments in the mass shooting in san bernardino, california, authorities are not sure what prompted a man and his wife to open fire during a holiday fire. >> police said that syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik were ready, they had plenty on them and in their home they did not get to use. brandi hitt is live in california, with more on the developing story. >> reporter: detectives here at the crime scene have now identified all 14 victims killed in the building directly behind me and the fbi is now stepping in and agents are digging deep into the gunman's back ground and their history and learning more about the arsenal of weapons they were packing. >> we have several down in the conference room --
>> the terror that unfolded leaving 14 people dead. >> shots going off like crazy and culminating into a police shootout is now a massive crime scene. >> the suspects entered and fired between 65 and 75 rounds. from their rifles at the scene. >> police say that the killers, syed farook and his companion tashfeen malik arrived in tactical gear and first dropped off their baby with a relative and then targeted his fellow colleagues during a work conference. >> he was acting nervous and left the building and 20 minutes later the shooting began. >> the police found pipe bombs tied together to a remote control bomb, and other pipe bombs were found in the house. >> among them were nicholas

brian taff will have a live report from san bernardino, a look at the suspects in the case and the families trying to heal from the tragedy. a group of new jersey fifth graders are facing criminal charges for allegedly plotting an attack at a high school, teachers found a written note to plan damage at clifton high school in new jersey, the fifth
graders were scheduled to go to the school on a field trip, they built a fake device filled with cinnamon and vinegar, the investigation is still on going. police are investigating a dozen armed robberies, mostly connects, the 15 holdups occurred in the 15th district. police believe that one suspect is behind several of these crimes. they released this surveillance video of a robbery at a tobacco store in may fair, they say the same man checked out the store several days before hand and investigators are saying there is usually an increase in crime at the holidays. >> we have extra patrols out in the effected areas of the robberies. >> if you recognize the man in this video, contact police. a delaware detectives was in the right place at the right time to thwart a bank robbery it
happened on north union street in wilmington. he recognized the suspect, jerome tillman. tillman ran out of bank and authorities chased after him, the two men struggled and tillman tried to drive away but ended up crashing, they believe he may be responsible for five other bank robberies. >> a driver was only slightly injured after slamming his car into a light pole this morning, the pole was split in half by the impact. peco was brought in to shut off the power. police in gloucester, new jersey, are on the lookout for a thief holding up the 7-eleven store on church street. he asked for cigarettes and then pulled out a large knife from his jacket and demanded money
