>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning, everyone, it's 4:30 a.m. on this tuesday march 15th. >> and here's what we're working on for you. police are investigating the shooting of a man on the front porch of a philadelphia home. >> a car slammed into a stone wall in a serious crash in gloucester county. >> it is a potentially decisive day for presidential candidates as five states hold their primaries. >> it might be a little drizzly out there right now. let's turn to dave murphy and karen rogers for weather and traffic. >> we're certainly starting out cloudy and yes, there is some drizzle falling on the windshield on the way in. a lot of those windshield

wipers on intermittent. there's a shower down to the south that might pull up into parts of the region late this morning on midday. temperatures are cool again. 46 degrees in philadelphia, 45 in allentown, 45 in wilmington and millville and trenton so very even numbers with those clouds around. breezes not quite as strong this morning, only about seven to 14 miles per hour overall today. cloudy skies on the bus stop this morning. drizzle is possible. maybe a shower but probably just the drizzle. 44 degrees pretty much holding steady between 6:00 and 8 o'clock and as we roll through the day 45 by 9 o'clock, 48 by 11 o'clock and then starting to get milder this afternoon. by 3 o'clock, we're up to 62. i expect a late afternoon high of 62 probably around 4 o'clock. and then 59 degrees by 6 o'clock and you'll notice that we are going to start to reintroduce at least a little bit of sunshine into play later on. unfortunately we got to start talking pollen. on yesterday's noon newscast we talked about how the pollen is coming back a little bit sooner this year because of

the mild weather we've had and by this afternoon we'll probably be looking at medium levels and tomorrow looks like we top out slightly in the medium high range and again it's tree pollen, that's always what we experience first in the season. karen rogers we have a milder day on tap for tomorrow. even better than today. details coming up. >> tell me more about the windshield swipers 'cause i like that. >> windshield pipers. >> it's just a little bit damp on the roads beltway you want to watch out because it's never fun to drive on these damp roads. looking live out here this is i-95 northbound at academy road where traffic is moving pretty nicely here. construction had been closing the ramp there until 5:00 in the morning looking pretty good overall right now on i-95. i-95 near the betsy ross bridge southbound near the betsy ross bridge construction also blocking the right lane. so you want to watch for some restriction there is but overall traffic moving okay, just a touch slow in that area where you've got one lane blocked. over here we have a fire location. edgemont avenue right near

i-95 so watch for crews on the scene with this one causing some closures not far from i-95, matt. >> okay, and let's keep talking about that. thank you, karen. breaking news, fire at a dine are led to the evacuation avenue hotel in chester delaware county. "action news" reporter katherine scott just arrived at the location on edgemont avenue and joins us live. katherine. >> reporter: matt, that's right a fire broke out in the diner overnight and the hotel next door had to be evacuated. i spoke to the fire chief. he said the bulk of the fire was in the roof of that diner. the damage is mainin mainly cond to the dining federal. crews remain on the scene here. the hotel is the days inn and the diner right next door is adjacent to it, it's called the grape leaf diner, formally the sunrise diner for people in this area and right now crews are on the scene as they continue to put out hot spots. this fire broke out around

3 a.m. and when fire crews arrived in the 1300 block of edgemont in chester they saw the flames of the exterior of the grape leaf diner. at that point the hotel had not been evacuated. when the chief learned smoke was in the hotel he made the call to evacuate an crew went room to room to make sure everybody was out. the chief says most of the damage is to the dining facility so the diner will likely be closed for awhile. one guest we spoke to said it was the smoke in the hotel that woke her up even though the fire alarms did eventually go off. >> it was very smoky in the hall. it was hard to get out. >> reporter: what floor were you on? >> third floor. >> reporter: third floor. >> and on the east side -- i'm not sure, east side and this of course come from the restaurant into the room. >> reporter: so, all ahead this has been going on we've some of the guests sitting in their cars, a lobby, there's an airport shuttle there. that people have been sitting inside. right now they're sitting outside the lobby of this day's inn. the damage is mainly to the

diner not the hotel. once enough smoke is blown out of the hotel the guests will be allowed back in and we're told that will hopefully happen within the hour. the cause of this fire remains under investigation. we're live in chester, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." tam. >> katherine thank you. and detectives this morning are also searching for a gunman. he fired on man standing on a front porch in olney hitting that man in the head. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is live at einstein medical center in logan where that victim is being treated. good morning, annie. >> reporter: good morning, tam. and that victim remains at einstein hospital in critical but stable condition and police say some of those bullets that were fired at him actually went into the home that he was sitting in front of at the time of the shooting. take a look at this video. we're told that this all happened around 9:30 last night in the 200 block of west grange avenue in the olney section of the city. it was there police say that the 22-year-old victim, a man sitting on a front porch, was shot on the left side of his head behind his ear.

now, police took him to einstein hospital and police say at least one of the bullets went into the house. >> we found a bullet that went through the front door and landed in the living room, so we did find one projectile in the house but we believe that the victim was outside on the porch when he was shot. we did find one live round also on the front porch of the property right next door. >> reporter: now, northwest detectives are investigating this case. they're looking for surveillance cameras in the area. already we are told that they do have surveillance video. they're of course always looking for witnesses. now, we do have a description that was called in to police radio. they say it's a male 6 feet tall wearing a red jacket, a gray hooded sweatshirt and he was last seen running west on grange avenue. for now reporting live in north philadelphia, annie mccormick, channel6 "action news." tam. >> annie, thank you for that. and the action cam was at a serious crash in woolwich

township gloucester county a car driver lost control and slammed into a stone wall. it happened along route 322 at berkeley drive. county officials say only one vehicle was involved. but they have not revealed how many people were in the car or if any of them were hurt. >> the man who took off with a minivan in west philadelphia way baby in the back seat remains at large. the four month old child is now safe with his mother and father. but the family's minivan is still missing. police say surveillance video from a corner store at 49th and walnut street shows the suspect. the baby's father had left his vehicle running while he stopped by the store. the vehicle is a 2013 white town and country minivan with pennsylvania tags we'll take that off for you there, jmx6030. >> police have released a picture of the halloween mask used in a chester county home invasion. take a look the suspect broke into a home early saturday morning in tredyffrin township and terrorized a woman.

the man bound the woman with duct tape and demand her atm card and pin number. he made a withdrawal about a quarter mile away. the victim was able to call 911 after that suspect left. >> today is super tuesday part three with contests in florida, ohio and missouri, illinois and north carolina. could be a decisive day for both republicans and democrats with enough delegates up for grabs to turn frontrunners into likely nominees. abc's kenneth moton reports from cleveland, ohio. >> reporter: it's here, the day that could be a critical turning point in the race for president. >> this is the place i want to win. this is the place, this is going to do it. >> reporter: gop frontrunner donald trump was in the winner take allstate of ohio overnight. attacking its governor and his rival john kasich. >> kasich can not make america great again. can't do it. >> reporter: the stop trump movement is in full effect. >> this country's not about us tearing one another down.

cleveland, ohio. >> pennsylvania governor tom wolf is urging state lawmakers to pass a bill legalizing medical marijuana. the governor reloosed a video yesterday asking the house to pass the legislation. the proposal would let a state board license growers dispensers and processors. patients would need a written certification from a doctor or nurse confirming that they have a condition that qualifies them for the drug. a final vote could come later this week. >> 4:40 now. much more to come on "action news." the man charged in a michigan shooting spree is blaming an app for his deadly rampage. >> an nfl official admits for the first time a link between football and a devastating brain disease. david. >> there's drizzle around this morning butter probably not enough rain to require rain gear for the kids and on the way home they might even see a peek of sunshine beginning to reemerge. temperatures are also milder this afternoon and even better tomorrow. i'll have details on that and we'll talk about a little unsettled pattern in the days ahead with some spotty showers around. >> ♪

>> the national weather service confirmed an ef1 tornado touched down in phillipsburg, ohio. high winds blew the roofs off several homes yesterday. so far, though, no storm related injuries have been reported. >> so we are going to be wet again today on and off. >> not like yesterday. it was dank and dreary with steady rain during the morning commute. now as we take a look at storm tracker6 live double scan you really don't see anything. that's a little misleading because there is some drizzle falling from some low clouds. radar does not pick that up typically but you might have your wipers on intermittently this morning. we are looking at cloudy skies and in fact the clouds so low with that drizzle falling from them that it's difficult to see the tops of the center city sky scrapers on sky6 right now. temperatures 46 degrees, similar to yesterday maybe a couple degrees cooler. winds are lighter only running out of the north at 8 miles per hour. your dewpoint, though, is still pretty close to the

temperature so the air still on the saturated side. 46 degrees in philadelphia currently and not much different everywhere else. 45 in allentown, trenton, wilmington, millville and cape may, a 43-degree reading in reading and out in lancaster at this early hour. future tracker6 shows you how we're start out cloudy with that drizzle around. there's a shower popping up from the south that might bother us by about noon although the latest model run doesn't pick up very much of that. as we go later into the afternoon we're looking at that drizzle starting to go away and we will probably punch some holes in the clouds and maybe see some sunny breaks. i can't promise bright blue skies but it does look like some sun is possible later on. temperatures are also going to be milder as we go through the day. as a warm front pushes in. 44 degrees by 8 o'clock. by 10 o'clock, 46 and then we get into the low 50's by noon which is better than what we saw yesterday. 60 degrees by 3 o'clock and i actually could see a high of around 62, 3:34 o'clock in between those two 60's. notice how we have a chance of

sun coming back later in the day. lives across the region everybody is milder than yesterday. 59 in allentown, 60 in trenton, 62 in philadelphia, wilmington and millville. and down the shore a little bit cooler, 58 in cape may but that is also about an 8-degree rise over yesterday. as we take a look at tomorrow, there's a warm front that will be coming in triggering early fog and maybe a couple of pop-up showers in the afternoon but the big story for me tomorrow is that temperature. we're going to get up close to 70 degrees and we'll go 69, i can see some areas like center city perhaps hitting 70 and then unfortunately a front comes in after that and gets us cooler again as we head past tomorrow. your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast today clouds mixing with some eventual sun. we have a little drizzle in the morning, maybe a spotty shower, 62 degrees is the better high and then tomorrow clouds and some sun mixing, mild, 69 degrees is the high. although we will have a chance avenue spotty pop-up shower and some fog in the morning. and then thursday saint patrick's day mostly cloudy skies, easing back to 65 degrees.

again, there could be a spotty pop-up shower around especially later in the day or evening. not a washout. and then friday clouds and sun, cooler, 59 degrees, again a spotty shower is possible. see how unsettled it is. we're mentioning a lot of those spotty nonwashout showers. we're bringing the temperature down on sunday to about 50. cloudy skies for the union home opener and the first day of spring and there could be some rain around especially in the afternoon. we'll see if that hinders the contest. partly sunny again on monday and still rather cool with a high of 52. when we're not on the air you can always check out the latest weather conditions on 6abc.com/weather and i'd also encourage you to get that storm tracker6 app on your smartphone if you don't have it already because with these spotty showers it's really handy to just take a look at that before you go out and try to get stuff done. >> particularly with soccer and baseball. >> yeah, all that of stuff going on, right, matt. >> thanks, david. new this morning a shootout in chicago injured three officers and left a suspect dead. this happened as police were

investigating drug activity in the city's west side. authorities say the officers approached a man and a woman who were acting suspiciously. they took off running. police gave chase saying the man opened fire hitting the officers several times. police shot and killed him and apprehended the woman at the scene. the officers are being treated for serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. the man charged with killing six people in michigan while driving for uber is blaming his ride sharing app. investigators say jason dalton told them the app was controlling him through his cell phone and claimed the artificial sense took over his body and made him fire at random targets. dalton does not have a history of mental illness. a judge has ordered dalton to undergo an evaluation to see if he is competent to stand trial. >> for the very first time an nfl official has acknowledged a link between football and the brain disease cte. jeff miller is the nfl's senior vice president for health and safety. he spoke about the connection

yesterday at a congressional committee's round table discussion about concussions. miller cited research which found cte and the brains of know 90 former pro football prayers chronic traumatic encephalopathy is linked to repeated brain trauma and associated with symptoms such as memory loss depression and progressive dementia. >> "action news" will be right back. the decision on whether two new casinos can be approved in north jersey is now in the hands of voters. >> also why a local university is cutting programs. all that when "action news" comes back.

>> ♪ >> welcome back. we've got problems on the roads even at this early hour. we're looking live and penndot is getting a real closeup view. i've 95 bristol township. an accident involving an overturned vehicle. we're looking at a police stop related to that accident scene right there on i-95 northbound. this is i-95 at cottman. that's your southbound traffic headed towards center city. the roads are damp. we've got a little bit of drizzle out there. not the rain that we had yesterday which was a complete mess record roads. nonetheless it's not dry. you have to watch for that as you're heading out and low visibility in a couple spots as well. what was have been talking about this fire in chester.

it's still causing problems on edgemont avenue between 14th and providence. we've got that shut down. stick to potter street as your alternate to get around the problem there. one more live look we'll take and see what's going on on the roosevelt boulevard. we were so jammed yesterday on the boulevard. southbound traffic moving okay at this early hour but the roads are a bit wet, tam. >> okay, thank you, karen. state officials released positive casino revenue numbers for atlantic city. there was a 15 percent spike last month compared to last year, six of the eight casinos were up year to year some good news for ac. voters in new jersey will be asked in november whether though to approve two new casinos this time in the northern part of the state. both the state senate and assembly approved that referendum yesterday. the question will now appear on the november general election ballot. >> time for your first look at business. here at the big board delaware state university. is cutting 23 academic programs. school officials say programs have been experiencing low enrollments. the money saved by the can cuts will go towards other programs like mass communication and applied chemistry.

current students in the affected programs will still be able to graduate with those declared majors. a former volkswagen employee filed a lawsuit claiming the company deleted documents after a federal investigation began. the epa accused vw of cheating on emissions tests. the employee says he was wrongly fired last year after refusing to delete the documents. the company says his departure was not connected to the emissions controversy. not much movement on wall street yesterday. stock futures point to a lower open this morning. avon is cutting 2500 jobs and moving its headquarters from new york city to great britain. a private equity firm recently bought out the company. avon expects to save $50 million this year because of the cuts. >> it is now 4:53. new this morning fire spread from one camden county apartment unit to another one overnight. details on that coming up at 5:00. >> missing dog in california shows up and it was an unusual way there they found him.
