>> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning, it's 4:30 now on this tuesday may 24. >> we're following breaking news here on "action news." a driver smashes into a bus canopy in northeast philadelphia killing the man who was inside it and then flees the scene. >> also breaking this morning, a coroner is on the scene of a fast moving house fire in the lehigh valley. >> bill cosby is due in a montgomery county courtroom this morning for a hearing that could lead to trial or his release. >> but first up, david, you said, showers. >> yeah. >> it rained any other evening. >> i'm sorry. >> what's up.
>> it was a spotty shower. you were in one of the spots. [laughter] >> i walked around for an hour and a half yesterday in my neighborhood and i got one drizzle drop so. all right, we've got rain out here and it is to the east of philadelphia and it almost looks like it wants to come back in off the ocean and just sweep across the area. unfortunately for the rain the low pressure center guiding this rain in toward trenton and philadelphia is pulling away so we think most of these bands are going to stop where they are and then kind of move off the coast. philadelphia could get a little wet but it's doubtful. you see how it's stopping and getting ready to start to scoot back out. the farther east are you from philadelphia today the better chance you have of seeing more of those spotty showers. 58 degrees is the current temperature. 57 degrees in allentown. actually a little bit milder out there this morning than it was last couple of days. 57 in trenton, 57 wilmington. 59 in cape may and on the bus stop this morning, not a bad
morning. mostly cloudy skies for most of you but comfortable enough with the temperature of 56 by 6 o'clock and 63 by 8 o'clock. winds not all that horrific. as we go into the afternoon for most of us it is going to be a pretty nice day. partly sunny skies. 71 by 11 o'clock, we'll go for a high of 79 degrees which we probably won't hit until about 4, 5 o'clock this afternoon. again to the east of philadelphia that would be the best chance of some spotty off and on showers today. karen rogers, we have even warmer air coming in back into the 80's starting tomorrow. i'll have details coming up. >> okay, so spotty showers and tam is in the spot. we're looking outside live. some of the roads are wet out there. this is the roosevelt boulevard northbound at ninth street. you can see the flashing traffic lights. we had an accident where a car hit a pole about 9:30 last night. traffic lights still not working properly on the boulevard northbound ninth street. use caution as you head towards the scene. let's take a live look is the vine street expressway. no overnight construction. the vine remained opened in both directions westbound, eastbound in the clear and
moving okay. how about the schuylkill expressway? we can take that you live or we'll go to atlantic city expressway. eastbound between winslow and hammonton here, we do have construction. the left lane gets by but this is scheduled until 5 o'clock in the morning so watch for construction here on the expressway eastbound. more people thinking about going to the shore and you'll have to watch for that one. here we are checking out i-95 from vine to woodhaven. it's an icy 14 minute ride in both directions and overall things are looking good on i-95 and the schuylkill expressway. just some construction there on the schuylkill, tam. >> thank you karen. breaking right now, a horrible crash in northeast philadelphia. police say a man was waiting at a bus stop when a driver plowed into the canopy he was standing in killing him. the driver fled but left something very important behind. annie mccormick just arrived at cottman and bustleton and she has the latest with new details. good morning, annie. >> reporter: good morning, tamala. that's right, he left his car behind and take a look behind me. you can still see it there sitting in the middle of the
>> flames were coming from the second floor when firefighters arrived. took half an hour for them to get the flames under control. they're working to get more information on this breaking story in allentown. and new this morning, detectives are questioning two men in connection way shooting at a philadelphia recording studio. the 24-year-old victim was shot in the leg in a building on north fourth street in the northern liberties section last night. two people dropped him off at hahnemann hospital a short time later. he is now in stable condition. police are reviewing security video from that studio. >> philadelphia police are investigating a two gun shot victims found along city avenue got into a gun fight with each other. a victim was pushed out of the car at haverford and city avenue around 6:40 last night. police were called to 77th and city avenue where they found a
second vic time lying next to a car. officer said she found a gun and two kinds of shell casings in the vehicle. both victims are in stable condition. >> ♪ >> happening today, bill cosby is due to appear in montgomery county courtroom. a judge will determine during this morning's preliminary hearing whether prosecutors have enough evidence to try him on sex assault charges. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live outside the courthouse in norristown way preview. katherine. >> reporter: bill cosby is required to be here. though he's not expected to testify. the question is will his accuser andrea constand be here as well. bill cosby is due at montgomery county courthouse for a preliminary hearing this morning after a judge denied a last ditch effort to delay it. cosby is accused of drugging and sexual assaulting former temple university employee andrea constand in his cheltenham home back in 2004. cosby said the encounter was
consentual. a civil lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount in 2006. the terms bound both sides to secrecy. prosecutors reopened the criminal case last year after dozens of women came forward with similar claims and cosby's deposition in constands lawsuit surfaced. the actor's supporters have questioned by constand waited a year to go to authorities and continued to have contact with him after the alleged assault. cosby's attorneys have tried to get the charges thrown out citing a verbal agreement to not prosecute by then district attorney bruce castor. one of the big question center city will constand take the stand today. prosecutors could rely on her prior statements to investigators. the burden of proof in a preliminary hearing is low. >> criminal defense attorney would love the opportunity to be able to cross-examine this woman. i mean, that's the building block to start getting ready for trial. >> reporter: take a look around. you can see there's fencing up around the courthouse.
there's expected to be a lot of members of the media today. there's member of the general public. it's all expected to get under way at 9:30 this morning. we're live norristown, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." tam. >> all right, katherine, thank you for that. new jersey state lawmakers agreed on an atlantic city rescue package. the deal would give the cash strapped city a $60 million loan and stave off the threat at least for now of a state takeover. atlantic city looked at a five month re-- will get a five month reprieve. union workers would keep their collective bargaining rights that have been a sticking point that have scuttled previous rescue package. the state assembly and senate vote on the plan on thursday. however, governor chris christie could still veto it. >> democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders says he's disappointed but not surprised at hillary clinton will not debate him before next month's primary in california. clinton told a big labor convention in detroit yesterday that republican donald trump's economic
policies would lead to lower wages, fewer jobs and more debt. clinton also predicted that trump would bankrupt america the way he has bankrupted his companies. trump met yesterday with senator bob corker. the meeting was feeding speculation that the tennessee republican is on a short list of possible trump running mates. >> a solar powered plane journeying around the globe has delayed today's scheduled flight to the lehigh valley. the swiss made solar impulse two landed in dayton ohio on saturday. the maker says the plane's mobile hangar may have sustained some damage while on the ground there. engineers checked it over and they didn't find anything wrong at first but they say they would like to study the plane over the next few days just to be sure. >> 4:40. still to come on "action news" parents in oregon push for justice. they release pictures of their child who they say was abused by a baby it. >> a popular north philadelphia bakery droid in a fire gets a fresh start this morning.

high is setting up in late spring we'll get warmth piling in the region with a series of 80s. we'll see the return of humidity building in around thursday. 79 is the high, definitely getting warmer, spotty showers to the east of philadelphia today. wednesday, sunny and warm, high of 86. a nice day, low humidity, thursday, very warm, 87 the high, there's going to be a little bit more humidity builds in. at this point we stay dry. 88 degrees, saturday, 86. sticky, a thunderstorm may pop up here and there friday and saturday afternoon, clouds and sun on sunday, 85 degrees, it may not be as humid, but we're looking at a thunderstorm, memorial day, 78 not as intense with the heat. a spotty thunderstorm is possible. remember, when we are not on the
