middle of summer today. we are getting the latest from accuweather on a warm holiday weekend ahead. and damaging tornadoes and hail, people in the heartland are trying to recover after severe weather tore across several states. >> and how to battle against mosquitos and the zika virus. we'll tell you ways to fight back. and developing stories out of german town where a philadelphia police officer was injured in an accident. it happened at 11:00 this morning at german town avenue and price streets. the officer was responding to an assignment when hit by another vehicle, he was taken to the hospital in stable condition. a woman at the scene was also taken to the hospital. all right and now to the forecast it's already a very warm day and the humidity is creeping in making it feel like summer. the high heat is kicking in before the big memorial day
weekend, earlier today at is the jersey shore it was cloudy and on the cooler side and a few people were wearing jackets on the boardwalk in seaside heights. great day to be outdoors, keep water and a hat handy to stay cool in the heat and humidity. we have team coverage on the rising heat. gray hall is live in delaware county where parents are enjoying the outdoors with their children today. first lets check in with karen rogers on the terrace in for david murphy. >> reporter: it's beautiful out here, as long as you like it hot. sunshine and a few high clouds, the humidity is not oppressive but up a notch from yesterday. normally a high of 77, we are already at 89 in martins creek and 84 in quakertown and pottstown and 87 in chester and pottstown and saint david. how about the suburbs in new
jersey, 87 in glassboro and 89 in vineland. cooler standing on the boardwalk, atlanta city 78. but at 92 in smyrna delaware. and 87 degrees in dover right now. so those numbers go way up there, and today's high is 89 degrees, normally 77. we are well above average. not reaching the record of 96 but nonetheless it will feel warm. satellite 6 along with action radar showing we had clouds earlier and they fell apart. just some high, thin clouds out there. we see the activity out to the south and west. we have just a slight chance of a shower today in the northwest suburbs, most of us just stay dry, how about heading out to the playground and bring the cool drinks, it feels like summer, 2:00 p.m. 88 degrees and 6:00 p.m. coming down from that and 86 degrees, a beautiful day to get outside and enjoy it.

including one in the small town of abilene, texas, they are calling it catastrophic. he lost his home but sought shelter in his basement. >> i survived it, i didn't hide. good lord upstairs. -- i've got her. >> at least 20 more homes are either damaged or oh establish rated. the big one in kansas reported to be a half mile one the twister on the ground for an hour and a half. in tennessee damaging winds and rain across the nation it's a case of extremes. there is going to be more stormy
weather in the center of the country from texas all the way to iowa. and as well we are expected to see tropical storms in the northeast and the northeast temperature as approaching the 90s through the memorial day holiday. channel 6 "action news." police in montgomery county are searching for the driver who hit a 7-year-old boy and then took off. surveillance video shows it's car hitting the boy riding his bicycle at the time. it happened yesterday at the 1200 block of oak wood avenue. police found the car a gold toyota camry but the driver is still on the run. the boy was flown to the hospital in stable condition. police are questioning two people after a man was shot in the head in southeast philadelphia. it happened on an gora terrace. he was rushed to the hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition.
police stopped a minivan nearby and took two men in for questionings. they found newspapers on fire in a stairwell at an apartment. when they arrived smoke was filling the four story apartment building and everyone was evacuated safely, and the fire marshall was called after the newspapers were found to be burning and nobody was hurt and some residents were allowed back into their home. questions remain today after a state department audit found hillary clinton broke federal rules with her email use and that clinton and her team ignored clear guidance that could have left sensitive material vulnerable to hackers. clinton and three former aides declined to be interviewed for the report. while campaigning in california, she said she used personal email

an adult man and his grandfather escaped their vehicle that plunged into a pool without getting hurt. it happened in the town of bar on, massachusetts, the driver crashed through the fence and went into the family's backyard pool and a sturdy cover kept the car from completely submerging. no word on why the driver lost control. there are several ways being introduced against the zika virus. the makers of genetically modified mosquitos are pitching their plan to congress and new products that plan to protect against the insects hit the market. >> a red hot debate over what to do about zika, as the mosquito season kicks in high gear.

temperatures in the upper 70s. by 10:00, 72. the afternoon and evening forecast looking good as long as you like it warm for this time of year. normally it's 77. hotter even tomorrow, 90 degrees for the high. our first 90 degree day, it's hot and humid and lots of clouds tomorrow and that is the difference, some sunshine and a better chance for a pop-up shower or thunderstorm. you may see a few of them tomorrow afternoon. how about the big forecast for the holiday weekend. the shore is looking great, head down there and dry sunshine and 74 on the beach and the poconos equally nice with a slight chance for a shower popping up and 74 sitting on the beach and a slight chance for a shower and most areas stay dry. in the poconos 82 degrees and monday is not a washout and mostly cloudy skies and a better chance for a couple of showers or thunderstorms coming through in spots, you want to watch for that, an easterly flow that will affect you on the beach.
