to pay off personal and political debt. vernon odom is there and hopefully will have a live report in a few moments. again chaka fattah found guilty of at least 15 counts in his corruption trial. now the details on the weather, you can feel the heat and humidity rising outside. it could bring a chance of strong storms for us this afternoon. we have team coverage timing out when the storms arrive in the area. lets start with reporter katherine scott, she is live with how people are trying to stay cool and getting ready for the precipitation and parts of our area could see strong storms. lets look live from sky 6 hd from the jersey shore in cape may. lets get the latest from katherine scott. >> reporter: hey rick, i am at one of the fan give-aways happening across the area today. the fans are loads up in the
vehicles and being brought to seniors across the county. the main plan is to make sure residents stay safe and know all the resources out there as the temperatures start to get hot. 300 fans were loaded up at delaware county's office service for the aging. they are heading out to eight senior centers across the county. they are part of the county's heat plan, a coordinated effort to keep residents safe as temperatures soar. peco donated 100 fans and have fan give-aways across the area today. it includes educational brochures to go along with each fan. >> we have a handout with each fan know that you must have the proper ventilation in your home, at least the window open while running the fan, if you don't it creates a convection oven
effect. >> we try to provide fans for comfort for the residents. >> home checks for vulnerable residents and outreach teams to target the homeless population. while they often talk about the dangers of extreme for the elderly and very young and people with health conditions, it's message is important for everybody. >> the number of heat related deaths has been on the rise and as i indicated especially for men in their 50s and 60s. it's not just kids, it spans it's gender and age and all over. everybody needs to be aware. >> and there are a number of resources including a heat information line, we'll post a link for those resources on our website at 6abc.com. >> thank you katherine. as we mentioned the heat could mean parts of our area
will get stormy weather today. lets look at sky 6 hd at penn's landing. it's nice now but keep the umbrellas close by as the precipitation heads our way and strong storms later this afternoon. david murphy is outside with the latest from accuweather. >> rick, warm, humid air often times sets the table for strong storms especially when you have the front headed in, stormtracker 6 live double scan show you that most of the area is dry and we do have another cluster of thunderstorms following the batch we had during our morning broadcast this morning. now, starting to fire up near the pennsylvania-maryland state line not far from gettysburg, getting in and out of the heavy storms with all the lightning and areas just to the south of lancaster getting some of this. and the southern half of the region in particular, into early this evening is under the threat to strong to possibly severe thunderstorms later today. cloud cover is giving way to sunshine and you still see that,
but obviously when you see the storms get closer you'll see clouds and some sun mix, in terms of storms anything that does pop from philadelphia, delaware county, and chester county and south does have the chance of producing lightning and downpours which is pretty typical in a humid air mass, and strong damaging winds on account of upper level dynamics, small hail is an issue. i am posting a small chance of tornadoes, there is a chance to see a tornado popping, it could be around here we are not totally rule that out. 86 in philadelphia and same in washington and from philadelphia to washington and baltimore where we expect the best chance of severe weather and the dew points are high too, running over 60 degrees, threshold for what we consider humid air in philadelphia. and worse in washington and the dew points and humidity tend to
be worse the farther south you go. 88 degrees by 2:00, we expect that to be our high, if we don't cloud up soon we could go higher than that. 86 by 4:00 and of course by 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 we'll be on the lookout for the thunderstorms start to pop and if you hear thunder head indoors to the lower floors because they could feature strong damaging winds. i'll have more on the progression of the storms and another round to talk about on thursday, it's all ahead in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. >> david thank you. remember with the chance for storms today, you can always check 6abc.com/weather for updated forecasts and send us your pictures and videos on our facebook and twitter pages. breaking news now from burlington county, new jersey, fire crews are on the scene of a housing complex in lumberton, new jersey, this is a two alarm fire and firefighters are on the
scene and there is quite a bit of damage to the home. this is the sassafras drive in lumberton, new jersey. we are told it was two alerms and everyone was able to make it out in time no word on injuries but a lot of damage, no word on how this fire started. we are told that fire crews were using hydrants behind a strip mall to fight the flames. we'll update this story, in burlington county, a house fire. and new at 12:30, a man is in custody after leading police on a chase before crashing in philadelphia. chopper 6 hd was over the scene of the crash, and the chase started at 9:00 this morning and after the crash the suspect took off on foot and they were able to catch him near the accident site. no word on why the chase started . we are working to find out
if another woman will be charged in the case of a woman handcuffed and stabbed and shot in fairmount park. armstrong turned herself in over the weekend, she is charged with murderering toy bryant. her body was discovered near the mann music center. it appears bryant owed $800 and could not pay up. >> from our delaware newsroom, a man is arrested from a store after holding it up and sexually assaulting an employee. garcia allegedly walked into the store and showed the employee a knife and threatened to kill her after getting the cash, garcia grabbed her by the neck and dragged her to the back of the store. they say while in police custody he tried to escape from his holding cell. out of delaware, health officials are investigating
several cases of carbon monoxide poisoning in dover, the department of correction says that four inmates are sick. they are displaying symptoms and carbon monoxide poisoning. none of the staff members have gotten sick. philadelphia police continue to search for the five people that attacked a couple outside of an iconic south philadelphia eatery. they were at geno's steaks when a man asked for a cigarette and then the man with a backwards baseball cap became verbally abusive. >> he started to snap and said we belong to isis and hit the one guy and grabbed my wife. what started as one guy became five. >> police say the suspects took off in a dark colored vehicle with new jersey plates. geno steaks says they do not condone this violence saying
that physical disputes are not acceptable anywhere and should not go without punishments. we are following breaking news from center city philadelphia, congressman chaka fattah is found guilty of all counts in his corruption trial. is he accused of taking bribes and using illegal funds to pay off debts. we'll have a live report in just a few moments. in other news, a deadly heat wave is scorching the west and southwest this afternoon. the heat has contributed to wild fires and evacuations, there is fear that two wild fires could merge into one massive inferno. adrian bankart is joining us live. >> reporter: good afternoon, a min by minute situation, crews having to dump water and flame retardant on the flames and those that were evacuated were
under mandatory evacuations. two separate fires caused hundreds to leave. more than 4500 acres tored in two fires burning dangerously close to each other. the fish fire, approaching people's homes. >> i'm nervous, it's nerve-racking. >> people are picking up garden hoses to quench hot spots in their backyard. >> the winds are kicking up and it's the perfect time. >> several large wild fires are burning in seven states including alaska. high winds are a concern today. and arizona had at least five people die due to the heat. paramedics making over 100 calls in 116 degree temperatures. >> and a little bit of a weather note.
the coast is expected to cool off but inland is expected to remain pretty hot and that makes for a tougher job for fire crews, channel 6 "action news" rick back to you. >> thank you for that report. attorney general, loretta lynch is in orlando today 10 days after the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. she will receive a brief into the massacre at the nightclub pulse. omar mateen killed 49 people and then died in a gun battle with police. lynch is expected to visit memorials today. and the attack has split america's political establishment. the senate voted down four gun control measures last night. we of course are following congressman, chaka fattah's guilty verdicts.
police have made an arrest in the case a bride to be. the body of amanda straws was discovered in her north carolina apartment, police say that her neighbor targeted her and set her apartment on fire. investigators used his gps signal to track him down in nevada. he confessed to the killing and strauss's fiance and roommate was gone when she died. >> it's surreal, i don't think it will hit me until i go back down there. >> the last thing i said to her was i love you and i'll talk to you later. >> straussed lived in north carolina and once in nevada. the motive romaines a history and some of her belongings were found in the burned out apartment. a woman is recovering after
being attacked by a bear while running a marathon, it happened close to the finish line and now she is sharing the terrifying moments. >> karen williams is nursing serious bites and scratches after a run-in with an angry mother bear. >> she was ripping at my arms and i had my hands over my head and i screamed because it hurt and she didn't like that so they gave he a whack on the side of my head with her paw. the marathon runner was about a mile from the finish line when she surprised the bear and her three cubs. >> she realize the the only way to live was to play dead until the bear leaves. he pretended i was dead and she kept glancing at me. because she attacked a person
the law is they she was euthanized. she was found an hour later and air lifted with serious injuries. >> very a nice chunk out of my eyebrow i'll probably have to get a little plastic surgery on. >> police are looking for the man that assaulted a 62-year-old burger king server in texas because his milk shake was not tasty enough. surveillance video shows the man throwing his drink and a chair. he rejected three milk shakes that the server made for him. as we look live outside, sky 6 hd showing you cape may, we are expecting stormy weather in our area. meteorologist, david murphy with an update from accuweather.
more breaking news at this hour. one again burlington county, new jersey, where police and rescue crews are on it's scene of this crash. it happened around a half hour ago at the intersection of 206 and main street in south hampton, new jersey. two cars were involved, look at the wreckage, one person was trapped in the vehicle but has been extricated. no word on how serious the injuries are or what caused this crash. serious damage here. a two vehicle crash. it looks like the other vehicle involved is that truck. police are investigating in south hampton, new jersey, we'll bring you the latest as more information becomes available to us and at 4:00 tonight. david murphy is back with another check of somewhat stormy forecast. >> stormtracker 6 live double scan you can see that most of the area is dry, warm and humid
setting the table for storms and if we go in close toward the western suburbs and beyond, lancaster county and back into gettysburg you have a cluster of thunderstorms moving east and a severe storm warning around gettysburg because of that storm and it's pushing in our direction and a chance of severe weather this afternoon into early this evening here, from philadelphia down to the shore and from wilmington down south and chester county is included in the possible area. this specific storm appears to shift down toward wilmington and areas of wilmington and south jersey, and it will probably been hour about it gets here. as we look outside the chopper 6 hd shot is softball being played in south philadelphia. that may be the carpenter tournament we covered the other day, where the female college softball players play in front of college coaches but we are not sure about that.
but they better get that thing done. your dew point is above the 60 degree threshold for higher humidity. winds running 5 miles per hour currently. future tracker 6 showing you between 2:00 all the way up to 3:00 and beyond, there is a chance of storms and the latest model run is placing it to the north and we'll see most of our action from wilmington south and by 6:00, 7:00, it's probably over with. along the way there is a chance of severe weather with an updated map released by the storm prediction center, the southern tip of bucks and delaware and points south are under the slight risk and areas from dover south toward areas just west of rehoboth are now included in an enhanced area of potential problems that means that anything that starts in these areas any storms could
produce strong damaging winds and perhaps hail along with the downpours and lightning and a slight chance of a tornado popping at some points from philadelphia to washington and baltimore to the south. a small chance of that and something that gets the idea in your head, if you hear thunder head to the lower thunderstorms and 88 is the high in philadelphia and 87 in allentown un83 in cape may. everyone is dealing with warm and humid conditions and a moderate risk of rip currents along the new jersey and delaware beaches. if you are on the beach and you hear a rumble of thunder get off the beach right away. we are in the 70s and the best chance of storms popping at 2:00 to 8:00 tonight. your exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast shows the high of 88 today and warm and humid with possible storms, tomorrow we get a break and the storm activity goes away and it's humid and nice and another
front comes in our direction and there is heavy downpours and rain here and there, and the potential of strong storms thursday afternoon and thursday evening, and 83. heading into the weekend things get nice, it's warm but not as humid and the weekend is tranquil with lots of sun and high 80s, you'll need cool drinks but no problems. and yet another front arriving and it looks like summer, you have the warm air and the occasional thunderstorm. lets go back to our breaking news story. surrounding congressman, chaka fattah, as we told you he was found guilty on all counts in his corruption trial. walter perez is standing by live at the courthouse. >> once again, congressman, chaka fattah, is found guilty on all counts, once again chaka fattah is found guilty on all counts in think federal
