>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning everyone, 5 o'clock on this tuesday august 30th. tam is off, erin o'hearn joins us. >> and we're following breaking news. a driver is critically injured, two homes damaged and several cars banged up after a wild ride in south jersey. we're live with the developing details. >> state police are on the hunt for at least two people who pulled out a shotgun and opened fire on a house in berks county. >> taylor swift has shaken off jury duty. we'll tell you why the berks county native was dismissed. >> first up weather and traffic and with dave murphy and karen rogers. >> a lack of cloud cover around. some stuff off to the north might try and streak in later. looks like a lot of blue above today. 73 degrees in philadelphia

currently, 61 in allentown, cool and comfortable in places like allentown reading bethlehem, trenton at 68, 70 in millville and 72 at this early hour in cape may. dewpoints are running a lot lower this morning. got a lot of 50's out there. a little stickier as we get into these 60-degree readings down south. all things considered a pretty nice morning for a uny run a walk to the bus stop or just out to the car. 78 degrees by 10:00 by noon 84 and we're going for a high of 89 if we can hold in the 80's today it will end our heat wave. not as humid today but still pretty warm. got to be careful of rip currents down the shore karen as we're looking at that tropical issue with those heavy surf swells coming in. i'll check out the tropics and give you the rest of your seven day coming up. >> tropics heating up. vine street expressway reopened. was closed overnight for construction and now we see westbound, eastbound moving okay but crews will return again tonight at 11 o'clock and t the vine down in both

directions. we've got a couple of accidents and they are big ones. this is in perkiomen. we're hearing it brought down a pole. that's why they shut do you know park avenue at pennypack road. you have emergency workers trying to deal with this. stick to schwenksville yod as your alternate and annie mccormick has been live on the scene talking about this accident haddon avenue at newton avenue that involves downed wires an utility pole. avoid that intersection and stick to mlk boulevard stemmed also the new jersey turnpike they're doing some emergency road work here and they've had to shut down the ramp northbound the off-ramp to 322 because of these big potholes. stick to the off tramp exit one or exit three instead of exit two here on the new jersey turnpike matt. >> thank you karen. back to that camden accident. it is our breaking news story. it was a wild crash launching a vehicle into two homes leaving several parked cars damaged, wires are down at the scene, debris he is everywhere. "action news" annie mccormick is live along haddon avenue where it looks like a bomb went off, annie. >> reporter: matt you're right it's a mangled mess out

here. i want to take yout vehicle behind me. you can actually see that big piece of red metal it looks like a door. that's actually the hood of the vehicle, the chrysler 300 and in front of the vehicle you can see that big piece of black, it looks like plastic, that's actually the engine. you can just get an idea how violent this crash was. take a look at this video. we're told that the driver was taken to their hospital by medics in critical condition. they actually had to extricate the driver from the vehicle because the person behind the wheel was trapped. now, it appear tar was traveling west down haddon when this all happened around 2:00 a.m. that's when they say the chrysler 300 was traveling at a high rate of speed down haddon, snapped a utility pole then violently flipped around. now there's not only debris from the inside of the vehicle and parts of the car but also the car batterynd sprayed on a number of parked

vehicles at the intersection here of haddon and newton. now when the car flipped it also knocked down at least two porches of homes and hit several vehicles that were parked. now, we talked to a witness who tells us some information that is conflicting from some of the stuff we're hearing from police. take a listen. >> i seen the guy flying down the street in the burgundy car but what drew my attention to it was the loud sound of him hitting the fourth car in line down there and it ended up flying into the house right there and ended up sitting here. i guess the guy wasn't wearing a seat belt or anything 'cause he ended up laying out here on the sidewalk. >> reporter: now, police tell us that there was only one person in this vehicle at the time of the crash and we're getting reports that someone was extricated so we're not sure if those conflicting descriptions of the scene that one person was laying on the road way. it appears to be a one person crash. you can see investigators, camden county police along with crime scene unit now taking a look around here.

this is haddon and newton. this is a busy traveled area, not far from cooper hospital so listen to karen's detours this morning 'cause it looks like police are going to be out here for some time. for now reporting live in camden, annie mccormick channel6 "action news." matt, back to you. >> wonder if he climbed back into the car or something like that? new information there thank you annie. we'll continue following it. >> police say a teen playing with a gun led to two children being shot inside a south philadelphia home. it happened on the 2100 block of south etting terrace. the children were driven to the hospital the university of pennsylvania for treatment. police sources tell "action news" that a 13-year-old boy was playing with a weapon, shot himself in the hand and the bullet went through hitting a 12-year-old girl. both victims are in stable condition. >> ♪ >> new on "action news" a man is recovering after being shot in wilmington, delaware. police say someone shot the man in the groin on the 500 block of west street just after 11:00 last night. he's currently in serious condition. police are still looking for the shooter. new this morning, a house was hit in a drive by shooting

in berks county and police believe it was the intended target. surveillance video caught someone firing a gun from an suv along union street in union township saturday night. one bullet hit the home, another hit a vehicle. a couple was inside the home but was not hurt. a cash reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. >> a camden county woman is offering a reward to catch the thieves who ransacked her home and stole some precious memories. margaret gibson of berlin sales the burglars got in through a second story window earlier this month. while she was at work she says the thieves stole her wedding ring and her mom's wedding drink. her mother died eight years ago. >> i want to be able to if i have a daughter i want to be able to say, you know, this ring was your grandmother's, i want you to have it. >> gibson is offering a reward up to $5,000 for the jewelry he to be returned. >> ♪ >> happening today, a kensington neighborhood is hoping to get its water service back today. several homes and a pizza

parlor have been without water after a 6-inch main broke yesterday evening in the 1300 block of american street. the water started to fill up a large construction hole. people concerned about the safety of their drinking water in horsham got some of their questions answered. last night residents in horsham warrington and warminster packed into hatboro horsham high school to meet with lawmakers and officials with the epa. chemicals have been found in the water supply there. the contamination is believed to have come from the firefighting foam that was used at the willow grove naval air station. >> dave murphy joins us and you have a lot to get to. >> uh-huh. we'll start out with the fact that there's no rain this morning he so that's good. storm tracker6 live double scan and as we take a look outside, we are looking at clear skies overhead and the promise of plenty of sunshine and that is clear skies just beyond the commodore barry bridge. but matt is right, there's a lot going on so let's get to it. 61 degrees in allentown as you step outside cool and

comfortable in the northern suburbs, a lot of 60's there. we're at 73 in philadelphia and 72 down in cape may. it's not nearly as humid as it was yesterday. the exception might be all the way down south at the shore where some spots are still a little bit sticky. a lack of a lot of cloud cover. if you're on the highways and by ways this morning and through the day you'll need the shades. it's also going to be warm but not as hot as yesterday and not nearly as humid so a really nice day in the lehigh valley. lots of sun, less humid, a high of 85. down the shore we do have those issues. going to be a beautiful day with a high of just 81 and lots of sun but we're still looking at heavy surf and rip currents along the shore today because of hurricane gaston out to sea and we'll also be looking at a tropical storm very like allot closer to us as we go through the next couple of days. mostly sunny and less humid in philadelphia, a high of 89 degrees. winds out of the east at six to 12 miles per hour. and then overnight tonight mainly clear and fairly comfortable with a low of 70 degrees. it's going to start to get a little bit more humid through the day tomorrow. on to the tropics we go. there's gaston not an issue other than the returns it's

forcing. tropical depression number eight and tropical depression number nine still have yet to form into tropical storms but it looks like both could later today. as for the storm closest to us it looks as though the most likely track would take it out to sea before it makes landfall in cape hatteras. tuesday, wednesday and thursday it's going past our coastline. this would force heavy surf straight through the end of the work week in through the jersey and delaware coast lines, okay, so two storms out there really affecting us. then there's this third storm. this one may also be a tropical storm later and the most likely track still has this one curving around coming across the northern half of florida. this means that if you have vacation plans anywhere from about orlando up to southern georgia and coastal south side and north carolina you do wander to keep your eyes on this one. this also looks like it's going to shoot off the coast well away from us but may also inhibit or enhance a little issue with the rip currents and what have you. just a to remind you if you get caught in one of these rip

philadelphia. it's a warm day today, very warm but not terribly humid. so we can handle this. 89 degrees to your high, mostly sunny skies. a bit less humid than it has been. the really nice weather lower temperatures start on thursday. erin. >> all right, thanks so much karen. new on "action news" a manhunt was under way in louisiana for three inmates who escaped prison over the weekend. the trio escaped from the detention center by jumping over two rolls of razor wire. authorities identified the inmates as michael elliott, mitchell and willie etheridge. they say the three men should be considered dangerous based on the charges which include attempted murder. >> new on "action news" an oklahoma mother is accused of shooting a man she found in her 16-year-old daughter's bedroom. police arrested 34-year-old valerie fowler for assault and battery with a deadly weapon. they say the mom called 911 yesterday morning saying she shot a 31-year-old man that was in her house. the 16-year-old witnessed the shooting and there was another child in the home as well. meals say the shooting victim could also face charges. it is unclear what he was doing in the bedroom. also new law enforcers in chicago are taking a closer look at where all the guns are coming from after an especially violent weekend. the bureau of alcohol tobacco and firearms says about 40 percent of guns in chicago are coming from nearby indiana where they are typically cheaper and easier to get into illinois. they say other guns are coming from mississippi. the bureau is currently working with chicago police and the state of illinois to prevent more gun crimes. >> a special media post is getting attention for a delaware county woman in need

of a kidney. jacqueline heiden of media has need a transplant since 2014. she's on dialysis and on a waiting list but her o possessive blood makes finding a match a challenge. her mom michelle put their phone number and the words daughter needs kidney on their family vehicles. to about 89 degrees for a high hopefully ending the heat wave today so cool drinks definitely important but with lower humidity and lots of sun overall it's a pretty nice day. at the airport not expecting any major delays around here, all green aircraft right now at philadelphia international airport and no sign of precipitation currently at any of our big travel cities. erin and matt. >> thanks so much david. in health check this morning, new recommendations today from the american academy of pediatrics about youth sports just as the school year start. the report says young athletes who specialize in just one sport are at an increased risk of injury. the doctor's group suggests children play several sports until they turn 15 or 16. kids who play multiple sports tend to have a higher chance of playing their sport of choice in college. >> in this morning's "gma" first look a murder mystery rocking an ivy league school. the search is on for people who stabbed two ithaca college students on cornell university's campus early sunday morning killing one. >> two patients, two patients. patient number one

prospective jurors with her. swift asked the judge to be excused because of an upcoming trial in denver where a fan is charged with groping swift at a meet and greet. the nashville judge dismissed swift as a potential juror. >> don't hit her. doesn't help. increase my chance of danger. >> fans across the world are mourning the death of gene wilder. the actor starred in classic films like the producers blazing saddles willy wonka and young frankenstein. wilder died on sunday night at his home in connecticut due to complications of alzheimer's disease. he was 83 years old. willy wonka is one of the finest performances in all of spinach. season 23 cast of "dancing with the stars" will be reneed a few short hours. the big announcement will come during "good morning america" this morning. the premiere is on september 12th and far's are anxious to find out who the celebrity daners are and which pro dancers they will be partnered with.

this morning, too. 73 degrees in philadelphia. how about coolnd comfortable numbers in the 60's in trenton, allentown, reading. just 61 degrees right now in allentown. 69 in wilmington and down the shore in cape may 71 in if you're head outer for that early walk by the water. here the are dewpoindown into th of the region. a little more humid with these higher numbers farther south but anything in the 50's is not considered humid at all and that's what you've got as you head outside for your walk to the bus, the car or maybe for that early jog. 71 degrees by 7 o'clock. 78 degrees by 10 o'clock. pretty nice morning and then by noon getting warm, 84 and today's high will be 89 degrees if we can stay in the 80's it will break the heat wave. either way it's going to be a pretty pleasant day with sunshine and lower humidity. karen, we do have issues at the shore with rip currents. we'll talk more about that and have an update on the tropics coming up. >> all right dave. hopefully we're off to a good start to the day weather-wise. no problems on the roads. we're looking live on the blue route appro
