>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning. it's 5:00 a.m. on this wednesday september 14th. we're following some breaking news. >> the coroner has been called to an overnight crash in the lehigh valley. we will have the traffic details plus a live report near the scene. >> police find a couple stabbed to death in a northeast philadelphia home and now investigators are trying to figure out who killed whom. >> new video shows a scary scene at a mall in new jersey that battery of a vaping device catches fire while inside a woman's purchases. >> a quick look at weather and traffic. we've got accuweather with dave murphy and karen rogers. >> good morning, everybody. we're off to a pleasant start. you can see he there will be some early sunshine. these clouds are going to start to dig in as the day
goes on and it is going to wind up a little bit hotter today but not oppressively humid. 69 degrees currently stepping out the door in philadelphia. that's not bad. 62 up in allentown. 66 in reading. 67 in wilmington. 73 he in cape may. all these numbers are running about anywhere from three he to 5 degrees warmer than they were this time yesterday and your dewpoints are still fairly manageable across most of the region. 60 is hardly an indication of any humidity at all. gets a little stickier the farther south you go that was the region. for your morning run 68 degrees at 7 o'clock fairly bright. you'll want to hydrate of course as always. it's a little bit more humid in some spots especially town south. 10 o'clock 77. by noon a little warmer up to 84 degrees and this afternoon at 3 o'clock 90 with a high of 91 probably coming in at around 3:30 or 4 o'clock this afternoonly by 6 o'clock we're back town 88 degrees. this heat doesn't last though it's going to be a lot more refreshing out there. we'll have that story and also word of a tropical storm
that's formed over the u.s. southern states overnight. we'll talk more about that karen. >> all right, dave, there's a deadly accident overnight at a northampton county major highway still shut down because of it. i-78 eastbound is closed between 412 and route 33. that's between exit 67 and 71. you're going to have to stick to 22 eastbound as your alternate. katherine scott is live on the scene. we'll be hearing more about that accident. don't go on 78 eastbound. stick to 22 instead. outside live on i-95 we have some police activity that was causing some slowing northbound right here. looking live between academy and woodhaven road it is cleared so traffic moving better right now. no more slowing on i-95. let's check that construction on the vine street expressway. westbound traffic still shut down. usually reopens -- it's scheduled to reopen at 5:00 but still shut down this morning. eastbound they're in the process of opening the ramps but crews will be back again tonight at 11 o'clock and shut the vine down in both directions. watch to that are one tam. >> thank you karen. as karen was talking about
this is breaking for us from the lehigh valley. two vehicles crashing into each other on i-78 eastbound in lower saucon township. the coroner called to the scene and that investigation has part of that road closed right now. let's go on over to katherine scott. she is live near that site in hellertown. good morning, katherineism good morning, tam. so far state police haven't released a whole lot of details about this crash so this all remains under investigation this morning but as you mentioned we he do know that the coroner was called to the scene overnight. we're standing on main street and you can see that 78 east entrance is shut down here blocked by a hellertown police vehicle. this crash happened right around 1:00 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of route 78 near the hellertown interchange in lower saucon township. according to pennsylvania state police, the accident involved at least two vehicles. there were multiple injuries reported. we don't know the extent of them all or the ages of the injured but once again, we do know the coroner has been called to the scene.
state and local police and fire crews were among those who responded. state police closed 78 as they investigated, as they looked at that deb he bree and tried to figure outer exactly what happened. of course we are in touch with police and we'll let you know if we get any updates. we are live in hellertown, katherine scott channel6 "action news. tam. >> thank you for that katherine. also developing this morning firefighters railed to put out a smoky fire at a historic church in south jersey overnight. it broke out at the temple of praise ministries on river road in pennsauken. fire crews focused their efforts on the basement then managed to get a handle on the fire in about 45 minutes. there are no reports of injuries and we're going to have a live report on this for you coming up in the next half hour. >> a motorcyclist is in critical condition following a nasty accident in south philadelphia. police say the bike and a car collided near 17th street and passyunk avenue yesterday evening. the motorcyclist was rushed to jefferson university hospital with serious injuries. police are investigating what
caused the crash. and investigators say this man was fleeing police when he struck and killed an innocent woman in hamilton township mercer county. police initially pulled over 22-year-old chandler heaviside on monday saying they saw him deal drugs in trenton. he sped off into hamilton township. investigators say heaviside ran a red light at broad street and park avenue and broadsided 22-year-old deja farrior quinones. she died at the hospital. heaviside was arrested along with two other men in his suv. >> it is 5:05. a deadly double stabbing in northeast philadelphia is being investigated as a possible murder-suicide. the action cam was along the 12,000 block of elmore road yesterday afternoon. plea say they found the body of the woman who owns the home near the front door. her boyfriend's body was in the kitchen. neighbors say the couple was in the process of breaking up and that there had been some recent disturbances but as for who stabbed whom that remains
under investigation. a priest from lehigh county is out of jail after being arrested for possession of child pornography. investigators say monsignor john mraz downloaded multiple pornographic images of under aged boys across several devices. he was a former pastor at saint ann's roman catholic church in emmaus. mraz currently lives at a retirement home for priests in bethlehem. >> ♪ >> delaware's primary results are in. republicans pinged state senator colin benin knee he to take on democrat john karen flee for the governor's race in november. mike prise sick key beat out seven other candidates. he gained 24 percent of the vote while dennis williams had only 14 percent. >> a college in the delaware valley is tops for academic quality while another local school is cracking that coveted list for the first time. princeton university is number one for best national universities that's according to the u.s. news & world

see some sun early and there could be a couple clouds filtering in. the big issue will be up to the north and west of us later this afternoon and this evening. some might try to make a run down closer to philadelphia. generally speaking this looks pretty spotty. lehigh valley 90 a little hotter today, sun mixing with clouds up in the lehigh valley. not all that humid. down the shore a bit humid sun and clouds a high of 83 degrees. looks like you're dry straight through this evening at the shore and in philadelphia hotter today, a high of 91 and that's only 1 degree off the record high for this date. sun and clouds a bit humid but not too bad on the humidity and winds out of the west light at six to 12 miles per hour. if you have plans to head to the phillies tonight, i'd check the forecast out before you head down to the ballpark just to make sure those showers and thunderstorms are indeed spotty and staying mainly up north. 85 for the first pitch. 75 in the ninth inning. partly cloudy skies. are you like to dry for the game. and then overnight tonight partly cloudy p, a late thunderstorm as i mentioned
64 degrees. that really should be an evening thunderstorm 'cause really i mean late in the day and early evening. 64 is the overnight low and the nice thing about tonight the winds turn out of the north and the humidity starts to top and then tomorrow sets us up for a beautiful day. a high around 78 degrees, lots of sunshine with high pressure building back in. maybe even feeling just a hint like autumn after that hot day that we're having today. down to the south of us tropical storm julia has formed, actually formed a little bit inland which is kind of weird. this is probably not going to move much and just rain out down here in the south but right now along the coastal carolinas it is wet. your exclusive accuweather 7-day near record heat at a with a high of 91. just a little bit humid then a chance of a spotty late shower or a thundershower and then tomorrow and friday nice, upper 70's, lots of sunshine and for the weekend a bit warmer on saturday but still not a bad day, a high of 83. could be a shower around at night and then sunday looks muggy with a high of 82 and they'll be some spotty showers

we had some construction out here on route 23 and we could see now traffic is moving just fine. the overnight construction is cleared and all the lanes have reopened at route 23 at matsonford road so looking pretty good there. how about the temperatures for you? it's 60 degrees in martins creek. not too bad. 62 in pottstown. 65 in saint davids. 69 in center city. temperatures a little bit above what they were yesterday morning. 65 in hammonton. only 60 in vineland and 66 right now in dover delaware but we are heating things up today. 91 for your high. not feeling quite like september. a bit humid with sunshine and clouds. tam. >> okay, thank you, karen. a scary scene was caught on surveillance camera at a mall in north jersey. mary mcinerney was at freehold race way mall when her purse exploded in a puff of smoke and flames. she says the spare battery for her vape cigarette device was the only item in the side pouch of her purse when that fire ignited. she says she's thankful that
the situation wasn't worse. a frantic calling from a woman claiming she was kidnapped throwed a gruesome discover. police found the woman and two bodies. they arrested 40-year-old shaun micheel great. great admitted he killed the wambach in june and left her body in the woods in the nearby town of mansfield. officials have yet to identify the two bodies that they found yesterday. going overseas doctors say former israeli president shimon peres is in what they're calling serious but stable condition this morning after suffering a major stroke. the nation is rallying in prayer and in support for the 93-year-old elder states man and nobel prize winning laureate. earlier this year perez was hospitalized twice for heart problems. >> phillies closer john march gomez and phillies bullpen couldn't capitalize on another strong pitching performance. pinch hit three run homer in the ninth off gomez lifted the pirates over the phillies five to three last night and overshadowed a quality outing
