you. >> karen will join us with the parade coverage later, we have matt pellman and david murphy go to work. >> reporter: a lot good smells in the house yesterday. the big issue is whether or not it will rain. we have light sprinkles by baltimore and gettysburg. they won't be much of a boater if they get into the parade route. we have more pronounced rain in pittsburgh, does it push north of philadelphia, i don't know, might be a good idea to bring rain gear to the parade in case we get hit with that. 41 degrees in philadelphia. 47 in millville. the winds are on the light side. they are inflating the balloons they will fly today. 7:00 a.m., 40. 10:00 a.m., 46 degrees.
noon, 50 degrees, under mostly cloudy skies. fully dry around the -- hopefully dry around the parade route. this afternoon high of 54 degrees a chance of a spotty pop-up sprinkle or shower as we go through the afternoon and evening. as we step inside we'll have the shorepoint forecast for friday. lots of stuff happening on the roads, as well. it's a holiday morning, we'll see the ramps fall getting ready for the thanksgiving day parade. this ramp just westbound to the benjamin franklin parkway. they are blocking off portions of parkway. you can squeeze by for a few hours. jfk boulevard is blocked as 20th street. kelly drive, spring garden blocked. some restrictions now, more coming in the coming hours. on the big picture our
crash on i-95 southbound by the betsy ross bridge is gone. no issues on the boulevard or the schuylkill expressway. there's a bad crash coming induce in talln township old 40-foot road a medical helicopter on the way. preparation are underway for the oldest thanksgiving day parade in the nation. katherine scott is live at the inflation station with a whole host of characters filled with hot air. >> reporter: matt it is more and more crowded as more and more balloons are inflated. we're standing by olivia the pig at 20th and jfk. let's look below, what's an important part of this are the
sandbags that are holding i -- olivia and the rest of the characters to the ground. there's a number of volunteers at 20th and jfk trying to inflate the balloons. behind olivia we have t-rex. the grinch, mr. potato head, a hungry caterpillar that's a favorite of my daughter bringing up the rear. at this point they are inflating another one i'm not sure who that is. i don't know if that's from yo gabba gabba. there will 18 marching bands and singing and dancing. the focus is getting the balloons inflated and weighing
them down so they are ready to go down the parade route. most of the people you're looking at right now are volunteers. some this is their first time, they want the to be a part of this. for others, they have done this year after year it's a tradition they have come to love. >> our parents brought us down and stood along the parkway and good memories so giving back. >> what's it like to be in the parade you used to watch? >> awesome. every time you stop the crowd yes, sir spin it. and you spin the balloon. >> reporter: what's the energy like? awesome. >> reporter: a lot of attention is on the balloons, the balloon handlers are ready to perform for the people along the parade route. it's november, it's a little bit chilly, but not too bad, having

children homeless on on this thanksgiving. the fire damaged three units at the he echelon village. the red cross will assist two families that have no place to go. a malfunctioning heating unit sparked the fire. a family of a little girl who was killed in overbrook held a rally marching from west philadelphia to the is in scenee accident 8-year-old was killed crossing 63rd street. her parents remembered her daughter. >> she was loving and caring. she was smart intelligent, she wanted to be a lawyer. honor roll student she was wonderful.
>> police released the picture of the car that hit her. there is likely damage to the front headlight and grill. >> markets are closed for the holiday, but some stores are open for black friday deals. many stores like walmart and target and macy's are opening this evening. over the course of the weekend, 127 million americans are expected to shop. the city of philadelphia is reducing parking rates to give holiday shoppers a break this season. on saturday until the new year meter parking will be free citywide after 1:00 a.m. 6 garages -- 11:00 a.m. 6 garages will charge a flat 8-dollar fee on the weekends. >> it might rain at the end of the parade. >> reporter: it might rain in the second half, we might get
lucky. if you're going to the parade bring a poncho just in case. storm tracker 6 live double scan showing on the way down to the parade there's not much going on. as we look at the bird's eye view, there's sprinkles and showers in baltimore and gettysburg. it's moving toward the east. it's possible that a sprinkle will pop through perhaps the parade route this morning. the more pronounced rain is farther to the west. it's a question whether or not that can make it toward the end of the parade. as we look outside, we have cloudy skies on sky6 live hd and there's center city looking south from temple university, cloudy skies above and for now, dry below. 37 degrees in allentown. it's chilly as you start out your travels early this morning. 39 in reading, 31 in philadelphia and 37 in millville.
everybody cool, but wind on the light side. future tracker 6 is not playing up the rain. by 9:00 a.m. you can see the pronounced activity to the west starts to appear. it falls a part as it comes through. there's a chance of a spotty shower reaching the parade route before 12:00. hopefully this model is right and it falls a part. cloudy for the most part and maybe they thin out. here and there around the region there is a spotty shower. today is not a washout. because there's a big outdoor event we're paying attention to the placement of the showers and the chance of them coming in before noon when the parade is wrapping up. we'll call for cloudy skies, there's a possibility of shower, rain gear won't be a bad idea. i can't guarantee you won't need. the wind are light they are inflating the balloons as katherine scott showed us, we're

there's a chance of a spotty shower or sprinkle coming through during the parade. the big concern i have is the blob of precipitation by washington that could mean rain during the parade. there's a possibility of a spritz. 41 degrees is the current temperature, mainly dry, 37 in allentown. in the 30s in the northern tier and toward millville. coats to start out. the winds are not all that bad. single digits in most cases. 40 degrees by 7:00 a.m. by the end of the parade, 50 degrees at noon. hopefully staying dry, but maybe a shower pops up. 3:00 p.m., that's the high, 54 degrees and spotty showers this afternoon. matt pellman i'll have more on the parade, thanksgiving call, black friday and the coming weekend it's ahead in the seven day.
>> reporter: the balloons are flying and the traffic is also, not a lot of volume on the roads. speeds are good, we have blockages because of the 6abc dunkin' donuts thanksgiving day parade. this is one of them, spring garden off the schuylkill expressway. the off-ramp from 76 eastbound to spring garden is open. once you get to the top of the ramp you have to make a right. you can't go left toward the art museum. not only is spring garden blocked, but eakens oval is closed is also kelly drive. jfk boulevard and 20th street are shut down. we'll see 16th street and both drives mlk drive will close, as well, over the next hour and a half. no issues on i-95 or the boulevard or schuylkill expressway. we have a bad crash in montgomery county, a medical chopper called to the scene

up, they are putting on a show along the parade route. here's bugs bunny, and we have the thanksgiving turkey who has popped up. he was laying down, i thought he was getting depressed knowing what was coming. here he is perked up and ready to go. joining these guys up front we have olivia the pig, we have t-rex. that's captain barnacle. tweety bird, the gang is all here. there are 17 balloons, 18 floats and 20 marching bands from across the country and singing an dancing. the focus on 20th and jfk is getting the balloons inflated ann weighing them down with sandbags so they are ready to go down the parade route. we do not want them getting loose before it is time for the parade. so these sandbags are a very important piece of the equation.
the people you're looking at right now are volunteers. they got up at the crack of dawn because they wanted to be part of the tradition. some are first timers and others come back year after year. >> repeat for me, great fun, adventure, unique experience. >> i live by the parade route, i walk down every year, i thought it would be fun to be a part of it. >> it is my first time, i want my husband and daughter to do it next year to start a tradition, because i'm having a great time. >> reporter: some volunteers say they want to put on a performance when they stop along the route a lot of people in the crowd cheer patrick spinosa -- spin, spin, they are happy to be part of the show. we have the bridge -- grinch

garden. you can't head toward the art museum. this is another ramp that's closed. vine westbound through the parkway, police have everything blocked off, as we get ready. here's the route we step off at 8:00 a.m. on jfk boulevard at 20th. head eastbound to 16th left on 16th and the left on the parkway south side of logan square to eakens oval. you can't park along the streets that's not surprising. if you're parking in center city, the meters do not need to be fed one of the many perks of the thanksgiving holiday. 40-foot road is shut down because of a crash. we have the water main break in lawrence township, 206. is shut down because of that. stick with princeton pike or route 1 to get around. consumer report has a crash absecon boulevard.
