down in the line of duty. >> it happened in tacoma, washington, just hours ago when the officer responded to a domestic violence call. he was shot several times and died later at the hospital. this was the solemn scene as his body was taken away. >> the suspect was believed to be barricaded inside the house overnight. the neighborhood on lockdown. 133 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty so far this year. that is more than all of last year. also breaking overnight protesters hit the streets of charlotte, north carolina, angry that prosecutors will not charge a police officer in the deadly shooting of keith scott. the demonstrators say they don't believe he was armed when he was shot but the district attorney says scott had a gun in his hand and released a video showing him with an apparent bulge around that same angle. this is him at that convenience store later in the day. the breaking news from the bay area, the fourth and final inmate who escaped from jail was taken into custody overnight. chavez was captured at a home

after an eight-hour standoff. they escaped from the santa clara county jail after cutting out of a cell. the radar shows the system that spawned several tornadoes over the past 24 hours, the storms are being blamed for at least five deaths in alabama and tennessee. overnight the storms moved east taking i'm carolinas. this morning damage assessments under way in the storm battered southeast. in charlotte, north carolina, the winds were powerful enough to flip this 18-wheeler. in greensville, south carolina, a tree slammed into this home landing on a child's bedroom. his mother says she told him to get out of that room just seconds before the tree came down. >> i just screamed at brandon, get downstairs. the wind is really bad and he came downstairs and we all huddled in the downstairs bathroom. >> reporter: the overnight storms come after tornado sirens blared in atlanta with at least three twisters touching down near that city. >> i never experienced anything

like this. i'm kind of still in shock. it's like, wow, so close. >> you can see trees piled on parked cars and this large chunk of metal is part of the roof of a recycling center that wrapped around a pole a quarter of a mile ago. >> the sound was very, very loud and it hits on that driveway there. >> reporter: at this children's learning center workers say an employee was walking from her car to the building when the storm hit. >> she had an umbrella in her hand and it flew right out of her hand. all the leaves, just everywhere. by the time she put her hand on the door it flew open and started shakeing. >> having a mixed effect on the wildfires in tennessee. the rain helped put some of the flames out but the wind sparked new fires. the death toll in those wildfires increased yesterday to seven when three more bodies were found. meanwhile, president-elect has reached out to tennessee's governor to offer his condolences and federal assistance. president-elect donald trump is taking a victory lap in indiana today. this is after making good on a campaign promise to save hundreds of jobs. >> trump is also vowing to step

away from his massive business empire to give the country, he says, his undivided attention. abc's janai norman has the latest from washington. janai, good morning. >> reporter: hey, kendis and diane, good morning the first leg of that ends in ohio but first donald trump and vice president-elect mike pence will head to indianapolis to talk about keeping jobs in the u.s. a done deal by the billion dollar businessman turned president-elect. >> this is a victory for us little people. >> reporter: today donald trump will head to indianapolis to talk about the deal to keep a thousand jobs and a carrier manufacturing plant from moving to mexico. >> to prove production from our facility in indianapolis to monterey, mexico. >> reporter: the company announced the plans earlier this year with reports showing cheaper labor in mexico, details of the negotiations to be discussed behind closed doors. not open to the public.

but what the president-elect has made public, plans to leave his own business to fully focus on running the country. this as questions remain over who he'll pick for secretary of state. trump seemed hinting at four finalists. senator bob corker, former cia director david petraeus, former new york city mayor, rudy giuliani and former rival turned cabinet candidate mitt romney. at the same time abc news has learned sarah palin former governor and vp candidate is under consideration for secretary of veterans affairs. nearly all with ties to washington. >> drain the swamp. >> reporter: after promising on the campaign trail to drain the swamp of washington, some now questioning whether trump is diving right in. and senators bernie sanders and elizabeth warren released a joint statement saying trump campaigned promising to change washington by taking on wall street. they say his pick for treasury

this house in upstate new york was leveled in what's believed to be a gas explosion. a woman and her dog did manage to get out alive. authorities say it was likely a methane gas leak since work was being done on the septic tank.

investigators looking into the plane crash that killed a soccer team reached the new finding that the plane did not have enough fuel on reserve. it went down on monday night in colombia killing 71 people. authorities say there was no fuel found at the crash scene and according to audio from the final moments the pilot repeatedly told air traffic controllers that he had run out of fuel. a new video shows the team boarding the aircraft before its final flight. remarkably three players, two crew members and a reporter survived. california national guardsmen who wrongly got re-enlistment bonuses may not have to repay them after all. lawmakers were outraged over the pentagon decision to force those members to return the money issued in error even though they were not at fault. netflix is no longer just a streaming service but can download movies to their device to watch offline.

more titles will be added in the future. the new feature will be included on all plans. a new study finds lack of sleep is affecting more than our health. the research says not getting enough sleep is costing the united states more than $400 billion in lost productivity. scientists found people who slept less than six hours a night had a 13% increase of early death and lost around six days worth of work productivity every year. most of you probably don't know who jim delligatti was but you've probably tasted his work. >> the pennsylvania native invented the big mac. delligatti died monday in pittsburgh. he came up with the idea for the big mac back in 1967. the next year mcdonald's took it nationwide. his son says delligatti ate at least one every week for decades. jim delligatti by the way was 98 years old. >> so that's the key to long life. >> there you go. >> big mac every week. when we come back, a sweet treat with a lot less sugar.

and a big blockage has been removed from a florida storm drain and by mean i mean a 9 1/2-foot manatee. authorities in jacksonville aren't sure how long it was there or how it got there for that matter. after being freed it was taken to seaworld in orlando for evaluation. other than a few scratches it's okay apparently. if you're about to head out most will find smooth sailing on your morning commute. the only potential trouble spots we're looking at lingering snow showers in idaho, montana and wyoming and some rain around the great lakes and upper midwest. the husband of the california mother who vanished while jogging is telling police -- she tells police she
